Ahh, this song is still beautiful, half a lifetime later. I love James - The wonderful gift of liberty they gave us all with their songs is beyond measure :)
Yes, we have to thank James for remembering us the gift of liberty we have inside of us and the divine nature we have and the spirituality we can reach without an intermediary.
Seems like he is speaking of the hypocracy and corruption within the religious institutions. DId any of those catholic priests who molested those children go to jail?
It's unfortunate the gods image has been tarnished by such subhuman motives that people had for their own self gain.
However this song also has a deep sense of spirituality,it tells us that we dont need human intermediaries to be spiritual, that our minds are our churches. And I agree every single bit.
every song by James is underrated, they got swept out of the way by bands like: The Smiths, New Order, Stone Roses, Oasis and all of the bands to come out of Manchester. But hell do they still managed to sell out the Manchester G-Mex in 1990...before Sit Down hit the charts!!
@gez2007 they were the best Manc. band ever, good thing about James was that they did a circuit most years, Nottingham Rock city was great and their "last ever" at the MEN arena was special. thing is though, i don't want to go see the new shows - what's done is done and i have great memories of following James in their prime.
Very Under-rated James track. The drummer has to be the best ive ever seen live, i saw them at the Liverpool Summer Pops about 7 years ago and was in awe of the performance.
James is the best.... I know and God to ^^
I'm going see them in Cascais... Portugal love you James(band)

The lyrics of the song are blatently about man using god as a cloak for their own aims.
Sorry if that sounds a bit 'preachy' (pardon the pun) but to misunderstand is a little silly. Are you american?
