When you make welfare payments greater that what someone can get in the lower paying jobs then make immigration possible you are asking for trouble. The employers in the US lobby Congress to bring in foreigh workers to do lower wage jobs. The problem is that these workers often bring in huge families who are then a burden on the welfare state. I'm for letting the laws of supply and demand function.

labour was traditionally the party that represented the rights of the working class, and old multi-generational voting habits die hard. Also Labour have been very generous with the welfare payouts given to rust-belt areas of the UK during the economic boom times, and have basically bought votes. This was done while the country was flooded with 3rd world immigrants who did all the shitty low-paid jobs the welfare-dependent natives wouldn't do.
