@DL345 "intellectually enlightened" doesnt necessarily mean high IQ... just like "well educated" doesn't necessarily mean "smart".... unfortunately i can't seem to find the words to explain myself further but for example..i don't have a high school diploma. however, i recently took the "Wonderlic Test" for a college application. i scored 34, average being about 21-24. needless to say i was accepted. my point is, "intellect" and "knowledge" are two completely different things.
@PenaltyoftheTyrant you have a pretty valid point, but what i was saying is that you don't really need knowledge or intellect to like this. I guess I was having a bit of trouble saying that.
Hella awesome. People concern themselves too much on weather people get it or appreciate music such as this. Who gives a fuck as long as music speaks to you weather its this or mainstream pop it's all just music.
My god this band is so good it's unbearable! @medskool101 please don't use the word "latter", it make you sound like you are writing a persuasive essay on global immigration policies or something. btw, i love this band too. Just messin' with ya bro! one more thing........ why does spencer stand so close to zach?
amazing techy polyrhythmic skill music, if you can find the alternating beats that is..i found most people cant understand the multi-level/multi rhythmic scales they use..but i love em!
moggieman is so right. maps & atlases is a one and only. and i don't think they're gunna write anything ever again. with Dave's "Cast Spells" and what not. M&A introduced me to math rock and then i slowly started listening to more mathy stuff. it's the way to go. the way of the future
you're entitled to your opinion my friend, i myself think the technicality is the best part of the music. however, i don't think there should be any doubt that these guys are creative
I don't know what the second song is from, but the first song they played is from "The Devil Isn't Red," an album I don't care for. However, The album before that one, "Hold Your Horse Is" remains one of my favorite albums. It isn't just technical, there are distinct parts of the songs they play then go back to.
Spencer is utterly humble for all his talent; Zach is equally humble, despite the fact he can eat any other percussionist like, whole in one gulp. These gods are phenomenal and wickedly brilliant.

On practically every video of Hella there is such negative feedback on how transcendental they are. And I find that to be rather pathetic because people respect Don Caballero and Maps and Atlases when it's, for the most part, pretty similar music genres. Hella isn't getting enough high fives for their incredible work. But I like their music and the way how they structure their patterns. They aren't disgraceful whatsoever either. They're just Hella.

there are no melodies in these songs. also: give me the time signatures for these songs, as you claim to love odd rythmic patterns. I dont understand how people dont dismiss this as garbage.
Ok theres no fucking melody in this song, happy? I still think this song and this band are awesome.
And frankly, I really don't know the time signatures for these songs. I honestly don't care though, all I know that the song sounds awesome to me and that these guys can play their songs correctly every time when playing live, give or take speeding things up a bit or adding something in. I understand that not everybody likes this kind of music, but that doesn't make it crap.
I didn't mean to offend you, i was just irritated by some of the posts i read. for example: harov2 and giftofnothing. Really ignorant comments. I am fond of music, i dont care about structure or barriers. What i don't like is neanderthal compositions being praised.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people forget that pretension and experimentation are what advance music as a whole...whether or not you like listening to the music is your own business, but dont dismiss everything you dont like as garbage, it takes fucking talent. Chick Corea, considered one of the greatest pianists of all time, played in a band not so different from this called Circle. Its an examination of rhythm as the main interest instead of melody. Try to open your mind a bit.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Shut the fuck up comparing chick corea to this fucking horse shit. Go listen to black label society and metallica and your other entry level bullshit. Hella is absolute fucking shit, that is why they will never garner any attention or praise from anyone above the age of 13.
Come down of your high horse thinking you have such superior views that only your opinions are the valid ones and no one else is aloud to have them. And by the way, listen to the fucking band "Circle" with chick corea and you'll see what I mean.
Also, I listen to more than Metallica and BLS, I listen to everything from jazz fusion to prog to metal, ect. Christ, your mind is so small that you can't accept the fact that maybe just because you dont like something doesnt mean its bad.
Jandro I think you need to calm down a little bit, just because you don't enjoy this music doesn't mean you have to go posting nasty comments for the people who do. If this music really bothers you then just don't listen to it. And what is wrong with listening to prog rock and fushion?
I do think you caught on to something when you said that Hella is an examination of rhythm. It seems they try to approach their music in a way that branches out from the western cannon of music that focuses heavily on melody (which I love, don't get me wrong). Really a very similar idea to blues, returning to very rhythmic stripped down style.
if i were to guess i would say that the complex rhythms and time signatures were less likely to be the result of intentional experimentation rather than to sychronize with spencer's playing... his riffs are outwardly spazzy but if you listen closely youll realize all the notes are intentionaly and carefully placed. dissonant riffs need intricate drums for their rhythms..... it could be the other way around, but who knows. either way, they know.
Well said. In my original post I may have negated the melody that spencer adds to the music by labeling this as simply a rythmic style. In my own expereince, music serves as a means of communication between both those creating it as well as those appreciaitng it. So it seems fair to say that zack is feeding off of spencer's dissonant riffs as much as much as spencer may be inspired by zach's drumming.
spencer is a beast on guitar.and in his new band sbach he's a beast on drums..find me a better band as a 2 piece!?....hella shits on most thing that can be shat upon...in fact they were better with spencer and zach then when they had four members!!
ps if your thinking Simon & Garfunkel let me laugh in advance hahahahahaha
I think the guy marked as spam 2 bellow me is right lol :P. Dont get me wrong I like Hella, but the reason they are not as famous is because the have no musical reserve, or are not very subtle in thier music. But i knda like that about them any way. So give that guy a break ^^

there are no melodies in these songs. also: give me the time signatures for these songs, as you claim to love odd rythmic patterns.

They are not only superior, but correct views. Jazz fusion to prog? Yeah, you're definately a fucking retard.

This is so far beyond music.
LittleEvjr 3 years ago 3
Outside of music, perhaps, whether or not it is beyond it is a matter of opinion.
As well as fierce debate, apparently.

spencer is a beast on guitar.and in his new band sbach he's a beast on drums..find me a better band as a 2 piece!?....hella shits on most thing that can be shat upon...in fact they were better with spencer and zach then when they had four members!!
ps if your thinking Simon & Garfunkel let me laugh in advance hahahahahaha

I think the guy marked as spam 2 bellow me is right lol :P. Dont get me wrong I like Hella, but the reason they are not as famous is because the have no musical reserve, or are not very subtle in thier music. But i knda like that about them any way. So give that guy a break ^^
