Verrrrry pretty! I have been hand-trimming the bottoms on mine and they are so kludgy that way I decided to try one-piece throwing a la Jan Partzybok. But boy oh boy you had better looove trimming if your stems start as heavy as mine. I have done 2-piece goblets for years because I enjoy the thinner stem ... but you have the stem thing down.... and your proportions are perfect. Thanks for postin.g p.s. MAN you have that wheel cranking! lol
Just spent a few fruitless hours messing up stems, when I should have been looking at this - really nice, clear demo, excellent technique- thankyou very much!
For months I tried to "self teach" myself to throw goblets...hundreds with some success much like your method. I've watched so many on YouTube, MySpace and private sites and without a doubt you are the best. Beautiful, graceful flawless and perfect dimensions. Namaste
p.s. Last year I was looking for tips on how to make a goblet on the internet, and typed in "goblet" and "pottery" on search engines... You can guess which movie kept coming up--Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire..Ugh.
Hi tim. thats a beautiful goblet.I have to try this way of doing it :°)
When you put handles on mugs you use vinegar and now you use slick. What is your experience with the differens, why not vinegar in this case? Thanks for charing! /Lena
it may sound like slick but it is slip. and I used slip because it was available. I didnt have vinegar there. Handles do shrink more (they are made wet when the mug has already dried. the addition of more even wetter clay will cause small cracks or even large ones. good question.
you make it look so easy! Was this video in response to the gripy people about the other guy's video??? Maybe they can learn something from yours.... Do you ever try the one piece goblets? There is a pretty good video of a guy doing those on you tube, also.
no i hadn't seen his till it showed up over there ----> I just couldn't believe that. One piece are always heavy, and are never as elegant. Simon leach has one where he is owing them on the bottom of a trimmed cup I was going to do a pedestal bowl vid like it.
I love your videos, Tim. However, one-piece goblets aren't "always heavy". They involve some trimming to get the stem narrow, but can be every bit as light as a two piece goblet and have the advantage of not collecting water in the stem in a dishwasher. The stem can also be very narrow and elegant. Potter Jan Parzybok has a video (not on YouTube) of this, and I've made them using his technique.
Youtube limits the minutes in a video or I wouldn't have cut the goblet stem thrown right side up with a bottom. Ok so they are not always heavy if you like trimming a whole bunch. Why is anyone making a flute or goblet anyways? Crystal and glass are so much better.
I found it quite easily. At the bottom of your youtube homepage blurb. I enjoyed the visit. Some really nice work. Am tempted to meke a purchase. Cheers, Andrew.
well that we just super if you did, sometimes i think posting videos isn't going to get me anything but a bunch of super potters competing with me later. but hey i can look at it like marketing.
Your streets ahead in skill and proficiency, so you've got a while yet! And anything to increase interest and understanding of the skills involved in hand made as apposed to mass produced is a good thing. And I'd agree that it's an excellent way of getting your name out to a much broader market too.

Yes, I found that if I put my index finger in the stem, it helps to center the work during trimming.

What the heck is an "Etsy" page? Nice informative video as always. Thanks Tim. Glad your back posting. Now to find that "Etsy" page.
