my dad was torpedoed by a u boat in the russian convoys ww2 on the HMS Edinburgh He was a Marine and spent 6months in russia the uboat commander says it was a lucky strike as they aimed for a merchant but with a low hull and hit a cruiser the tin fish went below it and hit my dads boat.I cannot thank them blokes enough for what they did as britain has turned into a nation of jerrymies people thank for the ones with guts and faith and courage and did not flinch LARNE N.IRELAND

How the armed forces conduct themselves when not at war shows a lot to the world about how they work together during times of conflict. Thsi display is more than just an excellent drum display but it is about how these men conduct themselves when times become serious.
it is things like this that make you proud to be British! We may not be the wealthiest or the largest or most important nation on earth. But if we do something we do it properly! Great job lads a fantastic display!
Can someone verify for me. I was told back in 1990 when I watched this being drilled in Portsmouth (yes I'm an American, 30 year retired sailor now) that the Zulu trappings on the bass drummers are real? They wear them in the same fashion as their foes did (out of utmost respect) and they are authentic trophies from the Zulu Wars? I have nothing but the upmost respect for the way the British Honor their past.
I left the RM band in 91 and frequently wore the Tiger and leopard skin when playing either bass drum or tenor drum. The ones we had then were the genuine article and the Tiger skin had been shot by Lord Mountbatten sometime in the 1930's. About the time I left they were starting to look a bit worn around the edges and some artifical ones were bought in as being more eco friendly but did look a bit like a skinned teddy bear!

@mgwilliams1000 USMC doesn't come close to the Royal Marines. The Royal Marines were throwing hatchets at French and Spanish Soldiers whilst the U.S was still in a soiled nappy.

Btw USMC isn't as good as the Royal Marines Commandos because they're different - the USMC are just Marines, the Royal Marines are Commandos - there's a big difference. USMC Training is 17 weeks - RMC training is 32... that isn't to say the USMC aren't good because they are.
@mgwilliams1000 I speak some German and know of no comparison for the word 'Devil dogs' in German. I think it might have been 'Schwein hunds' which has the same implications! The only way you may have brought our world down was waiting three years and more just watching us almost bleed to death and then charge us massive interest payments in both wars. We only finished paying you off some eight years ago. No other nation paid you a penny back, especially the French and Russians.

Super-talented people! Could anyone tell me about the tiger-skinned (my guess) bass drummer at 3:11? I'm just curious if that particular uniform has a special historical significance within Her Majesties' Marines? It just looks too great to not ask. I appoligize if this is basic.
@shadownor As far as I know it started with bass-drummers wearing a hide over their uniforms to protect them from wear from the drum, prevent drum-fittings getting hooked up on buttons, etc. Snazzy-looking tiger and leopard skins were adopted when they became available (in the 18th Century), and became traditional. But I bet you'll find a better story out there somewhere.
@sirnathanael no they don't because they are not commandos (you will not see a bandy in a green beret [also women can join]). But with all due respect to them they all have to master (as you can see in the video) at least 2 instruments, and there drill is flawless. I would say that RM bandies are some of the most talented musicians out there. They also have to be of some use to the armed forces so they train as medics / first aid and stuff like that
Mt Father served from early 1930 to 1946 in the Royal Marines. After basic training he was a Captain in the Commandos (41 and 42 commando), and was in almost every theatre of the war, including North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Middle East, Burma, and the relief of Hong Kong after the Japanese Surrender. He even ran the Commando Training School in Devon for 6 months. He was scarred for life from what he experienced, but was always so proud of the Royals.
For the majority of my Royal Navy career I was lucky enough to be drafted to ships and establishments that had RM bands and I got to play with them on odd occasions - God how I miss those days.
Very impressive. Being a former U.S. Marine I have alot of respect for the Royal Marines... very disciplined and tough! God save the Queen and may God move Obama out of office QUICKLY!! yeah thats right.. I said that!

As far as shortsighted answers go, you just won the world championship. The british lost, at the most, a number of battles and campaigns, but as far as history can be consulted, they indeed won the war against both Germany and Japan alongside their allies.

@mindawareness We didn't leave, we lost and had to surrender a garrison of some 100,000 men, many of whom died in Japanese captivity, it was probably the greatest defeat in Imperial history, but I think we made some amends, in defeating the communists in Malaya, and the Indonesians in Borneo, which ultimately allowed Singapore to maintain itself as a city state (communist Malaysia or an all powerful Indonesia would never have acquiesed to your will).
@mindawareness the surrender of Singapore was the single largest surrender in the British Army's history, so it was pretty sad for us aswell. im pretty sure the British did not leave you out of choice, but out of necessity.
@mindawareness the only point where Britain looked like losing the war was at Dunkirk and that was only because the French gave in so we were technically fighting the Germans alone! Hell we even destroyed the French fleet at Oran we were that desperate. You Yanks did nothing to help, it is a well known fact that Roosevelt was planning the defense of USA when Britain fell. He even tried to persuade PM King of Canada to get the whole British fleet to dock in Canada to stop the Germans getting it!
@nrjelley Let me get this straight.........The debacle at Dunkirk was OUR fault, is that it? What a warped view of history. The USA lost 300,000 men in Europe during WW2 plus another 300,000 men wounded. I think our sacrifice was sufficient.

If the British Army were to have been destroyed at Dunkirk a Nazified Europe would soon have followed, and after that Hitler would launch an assault on USA! @mgwilliams1000 Btw you do know that the USMC Called themselves the "Devil Dogs"? Go talk to the German veterans from Dunkirk, saying they never wanted to see another British soldier again. (P.S we were winning in 1918)
Btw USMC isn't as good as the Royal Marines Commandos because they're different - the USMC are just Marines, the Royal Marines are Commandos - there's a big difference. USMC Training is 17 weeks - RMC training is 32... that isn't to say the USMC aren't good because they are.

@mgwilliams1000 I speak some German and know of no comparison for the word 'Devil dogs' in German. I think it might have been 'Schwein hunds' which has the same implications! The only way you may have brought our world down was waiting three years and more just watching us almost bleed to death and then charge us massive interest payments in both wars. We only finished paying you off some eight years ago. No other nation paid you a penny back, especially the French and Russians.

Super-talented people! Could anyone tell me about the tiger-skinned (my guess) bass drummer at 3:11? I'm just curious if that particular uniform has a special historical significance within Her Majesties' Marines? It just looks too great to not ask. I appoligize if this is basic.

@shadownor As far as I know it started with bass-drummers wearing a hide over their uniforms to protect them from wear from the drum, prevent drum-fittings getting hooked up on buttons, etc. Snazzy-looking tiger and leopard skins were adopted when they became available (in the 18th Century), and became traditional. But I bet you'll find a better story out there somewhere.

@sirnathanael no they don't because they are not commandos (you will not see a bandy in a green beret [also women can join]). But with all due respect to them they all have to master (as you can see in the video) at least 2 instruments, and there drill is flawless. I would say that RM bandies are some of the most talented musicians out there. They also have to be of some use to the armed forces so they train as medics / first aid and stuff like that

Mt Father served from early 1930 to 1946 in the Royal Marines. After basic training he was a Captain in the Commandos (41 and 42 commando), and was in almost every theatre of the war, including North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Middle East, Burma, and the relief of Hong Kong after the Japanese Surrender. He even ran the Commando Training School in Devon for 6 months. He was scarred for life from what he experienced, but was always so proud of the Royals.

@mindawareness When your on about facts Burma, Germany and Japan was Burma. They were all battles during world war 2 and we did win the war. Do the Falklands ring a bell to you probly not. Well we won that one to, both sides had same tec and we only sent the RMC and paras and kicked their arse. What about vietnam US lost and they where fighting not very advanced people as far as tec goes. So maybe you are the one who should look up their history and get the facts right.

As far as shortsighted answers go, you just won the world championship. The british lost, at the most, a number of battles and campaigns, but as far as history can be consulted, they indeed won the war against both Germany and Japan alongside their allies.
Name two European capitals of the countries participating in WW2, which were never during the war conquered by the opposite faction.

@mindawareness We didn't leave, we lost and had to surrender a garrison of some 100,000 men, many of whom died in Japanese captivity, it was probably the greatest defeat in Imperial history, but I think we made some amends, in defeating the communists in Malaya, and the Indonesians in Borneo, which ultimately allowed Singapore to maintain itself as a city state (communist Malaysia or an all powerful Indonesia would never have acquiesed to your will).

@mindawareness the surrender of Singapore was the single largest surrender in the British Army's history, so it was pretty sad for us aswell. im pretty sure the British did not leave you out of choice, but out of necessity.

@mindawareness the only point where Britain looked like losing the war was at Dunkirk and that was only because the French gave in so we were technically fighting the Germans alone! Hell we even destroyed the French fleet at Oran we were that desperate. You Yanks did nothing to help, it is a well known fact that Roosevelt was planning the defense of USA when Britain fell. He even tried to persuade PM King of Canada to get the whole British fleet to dock in Canada to stop the Germans getting it!

@nrjelley Let me get this straight.........The debacle at Dunkirk was OUR fault, is that it? What a warped view of history. The USA lost 300,000 men in Europe during WW2 plus another 300,000 men wounded. I think our sacrifice was sufficient.

If the British Army were to have been destroyed at Dunkirk a Nazified Europe would soon have followed, and after that Hitler would launch an assault on USA! USA should have joined the war long before Dunkirk, even you cannot deny that, but instead you carried on with your stupid isolationist ideology!
