Another reason not commonly observed why whale hunting seems so bad is that whales are large and move 'slowly' so the whole killing process is slower and more dragged out. If you watched pig slaughter in slow motion it would make you much sicker than watching a pig get slaughtered quickly. Similarily, I'm sure if the whale was killed instantly, rather than suffering with a harpoon trying to get away, it would be much less disturbing to most people. It's all in the details people!
I agree with the comment about eating pork and thinking about the pig. If you watch how pork is prepared in factory farms and what the pigs go through a whale's life is beautiful in comparison up to it's final moments when it is slaughtered. Most people's mental depiction of whales usually includes scenes of whales gracefully swimming in the ocean with sunlight shimmering through the water and other such magnificent scenes - naturally beautiful. I don't think its right to attack them like this... If they want to do something about it, rather than making it so illegal, have guidelines which they can follow. Cause by preventing them from sourcing whale may cause more issues.

Cos whales are an important part of the ocean ecosystem and removing any part, especially a big part of an ecosystem causes problems for the creatures left behind. If you know your history, relations werent that good at the time for either country to help out the other. For all who read this logically its quite simple. American's keep there preferred foods "livestock, seafood, produce" well in abundance so that it does not run out. I guess I should have mentioned that the Japanese whaling fleet added Humpback whales to its list for slaughter, but also where the Japanese hunt is suppose to be a whale sanctuary. They and many other countries signed a treaty not to hunt in that area.

Another reason not commonly observed why whale hunting seems so bad is that whales are large and move 'slowly' so the whole killing process is slower and more dragged out. If you watched pig slaughter in slow motion it would make you much sicker than watching a pig get slaughtered quickly. Similarily, I'm sure if the whale was killed instantly, rather than suffering with a harpoon trying to get away, it would be much less disturbing to most people. It's all in the details people!

I agree with the comment about eating pork and thinking about the pig. If you watch how pork is prepared in factory farms and what the pigs go through a whale's life is beautiful in comparison up to it's final moments when it is slaughtered. Most people's mental depiction of whales usually includes scenes of whales gracefully swimming in the ocean with sunlight shimmering through the water and other such magnificent scenes - naturally beautiful. Pigs are seen as dirty and ugly, meat worthy.

Whale meat tastes good with ketchup. An extravagant recipe would certainly enhance the unmistakable flavor of whale, but the last time I ate it, I just fried it up to a medium rare with a little pepper and garlic and rolled it around in some ketchup. Good stuff!

eating endangered species, whatever the species, is just a bad idea. Why does it matter? Cos whales are an important part of the ocean ecosystem and removing any part, especially a big part of an ecosystem causes problems for the creatures left behind. The oceans feed us and provide most of our oxygen, so we owe it to ourselves to take care of it.

eating a whale is not different to eating a cow or pig, we just understand/see them differently in different cultures. The problem with hunting and eating whales is that all whales except the minke are endangered - from commercial hunting in the past.
Whales have long life cycles with long gestation periods, few offspring (Often only one every few years) so with current population sizes and demand commercially hunting, selling and munching them can quickly trash their populations.

@dumaznbum You probably miss-read. Large scale comercial whaling for Japan didnt begin until just after WWII. If you know your history, relations werent that good at the time for either country to help out the other. Just want to repeat myself from another message I just made.- Whale meat is a slab of saturated fat, there are more nutritional benfits in a Twinkie/ding dong/ho-ho... you get the idea. Unless you're eating dolphin which is labled as whale, then your getting mercury poisining!

For all who read this logically its quite simple. American's keep there preferred foods "livestock, seafood, produce" well in abundance so that it does not run out. The Japanese should create an effort to keep the endangered species alive and restore their populations to a healthy state while using them as a food source.

I guess I should have mentioned that the Japanese whaling fleet added Humpback whales to its list for slaughter, but also where the Japanese hunt is suppose to be a whale sanctuary. They and many other countries signed a treaty not to hunt in that area.
The Japanese are breaking that treaty and treating that area as their own exclusive fishery.
