Well I may only have four years of experience and may only have the lowly title of first chair in my highschool concert band, but I think he's pretty amazing. I didn't like some of the stylistic things in the middle, but I'm not yet a professional musician. When I am maybe my opinions will change.
i wanna be as good as Galway one day! :D I'M SO FREAKING JEALOUS!(: i have many, many years to go to be as good as him! too gorgeous! i love Galway!(:
I didn't mind the fast tempo for the fast sections but do some phrasing, please, and some dynamics would be nice; the middle section: what was that? Totally against the composers' wishes; way too slow and lousy phrasing if you ask me; his playing is rough and seems like he's not even there emotionally.
@flutist1989 let us know when you are playing first chair flute with the Berlin Philharmonic with your penny whistle. Maybe you should offer Sir James some private lessons to correct his embouchure problems. Jeeez!
@Alastair6 Have you ever heard a recording from when he was in Berlin... let me know when you find one that is in tune. I"m pretty sure they fired him and he also admits to drinking, smoking pot and partying every night the whole time he was in the phil. He didn't do a very good job... and he wasn't welcomed back in open arms like Pahud was.
I believe he took way too fast....this piece is not a technical exercise, yes it's supposed to be played fast but not that much, it even made him play unstable in the beginning.
I'm kind of disappointed because he's normally a great flutist, but on this one, Pahud made a way better performance.
Woah don't make it that much of a drama dude, I'm juste stating my opinion which is based on both taste and musical experience. If you love this interpretation, that's great, but I don't and I am totally free to do so.
im not quite sure, but babelfish translates that into:
Often many musicians let to excessive take from the temptation to show more the technique that music. Galway nn is one of those which it must demonstrate alcunchè to nobody, but in this case it falls in the trap of if same, ending x nn to be precise nenche technically. An all calmer P2o would have been better. More musician and less machine that grinder notes, today x to go fast c' it is the PC that xò nn has the heart.
I'm not your buddy and you should write to other teenagers because you're just too dumb to associate with adults.
Try learning how to spell flutist before you discuss the topic, Junior.
And get into an English class so you might be able to write clear sentences that mean something. Or just stick to the phrase "whatever" ...because that's about all you have to say.
@Rexicano Ever heard of a typo? And maybe instead of bullying kids on the internet you should go give Sir James a flute lesson, because obviously your SO much better than him.
You are in no position to comment on a flute legend's playing. If you were playing this piece of music i guarantee you would make a worl of mistakes, and Sir James would be sitting on the sidelines laughing his head off. You can keep arguing this forever, but in the end I am right, so just give it up & don't mess with me.
@lizzyclark11 Actually, being from the same parts as Sir James and having played with him in an orchestral capacity on numerous occasions, I can tell you that the last thing he would do is sit and laugh at a less able player. How can you justify your judgement of his character?

If you look into his eyes a little bit, even if he has his eyes on the flute
You can see he looks a little bit like Hermeto Pascoal
just a mindless observation

yes, it's correct. Great technique is not always...great performance.

I agree;
he's a note grinder.
And when he gets a slow passage he smothers the notes with excessive vibrato.

@Rexicano alright lets see you do better buddy
its his style, every floutist has their own specific style, and his to use vibrato and the airy tone is on purpose.
