My opinion is that we need to change the law of citizenship. We have it now that if you are born in this country you are automatically a citizen. I think it should be if one of your parents is a US citizen and you are born in this country then you are a citizen. Anyone who thinks "going after employers" is the solution to BORDER SECURITY is deep in left field.

Yes, some employers do volitionally exploit illegals. Those employers should always be prosecuted. But it's ridiculous to saddle business in general with the staggering responsibility of BORDER SECURITY.

If even the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is systematically incompetent to identify illegals, what would lead anyone to think the average small business would have the resources? Think about it!

Yes, but "the law" is not enforced, except in extreme cases. Why? Because it is understood that there is no MECHANISM in place for private business--especially SMALL business--to reliably verify immigration status of applicants.

CASE IN POINT: In my city we had a huge controversy when a veteran police officer was discovered to be illegal. He circumvented massive background checks with a false identity. If even THE POLICE cannot identify illegals, how can anyone else?

I'm not suggesting that it shouldn't be illegal for businesses to hire illegals. I'm just pointing out that, under the current system, it is ludicrous to expect businesses to "screen out" illegals with any kind of efficiency. Moreover, it is absurd for us to think that private business enforcement can serve as our PRIMARY deterrent--as some are suggesting!

At most, business can only be a small part of the solution--and then, only if the government develops an effective screening mechanism.
