Nicko is very powerful, smart and free drummer. he plays whatever he wants and needs in Iron Maiden and he never overplays. That's a very important thing in music. He can much more and better as drummer in Maiden but he keeps his drumming "along with the band".
Saw this tour in Poughkeepsie sometime around this show. A great lost tour as people only talk about the beast and powerslave. Great band in their prime.

Absolutely true. Iron Maiden is my favorite band and Priest comes extemely close. Both have great singers and your taking into account with power or versatility. With both bands, you get the best of both worlds.
No offense to anyone but MAIDEN is better than priest, and although clive and diano were amazing Nicko and Bruce are better and no they weren't just riding momentum because it takes talent to make it and they had it and could have easily failed yet they didn't
well priest is the one doing the metal back in 1975 ever hear victim of changes and the ripper? ever hear the live album unleashed in the east back in 79 blow your ass away. way ahead of their damn time
Clive Burr was a great drummer, undoubtely, but...something happened to Maiden after Nicko got into the band...don't you think??? Something similar happened when Bruce replaced Paul Di'anno. I think their kingdom really started with THIS formation.
I politely disagree. :) they definitely got more popular when Nicko & Dickinson joined, but they were simply carrying the momentum of a band that had toured straight for 3 years. the ground work had been laid... and they reaped the rewards. as far as prime Iron Maiden goes.... you can't beat the 1980 "Live At The Ruskin" gig. 5 blokes including Dennis Stratton, Clive Burr and the man Paul Di'Anno sweating it out in a pommy pub. the energy level has never been beaten!!
@rodrigoglchaves i disgree i think maiden got better after paul.....dont get me wrong i love pauls vocals...i just like bruce's more and with the drumming thing.....Nicko is just insaine period
@rodrigoglchaves Ya, a lot of great drummers have that "feel". For example, when Iron Maiden first got Nicko, they immediately recorded a song with a drum intro so that you immediately could feel the impact. The recent band "Warbringer" is the same way. Look up "Jackal" by Warbringer. Their second album has a much better production because they got a fresh new drummer who is incredible.
@Bassbait i agree, and another example of that is painkiller, by judas priest, when scott travis came in...i didn't know warbringer, the drummer is really great, thanks for mention it :)
@rodrigoglchaves I agree, it did change the band when nicko joined. His drumming style is a little different, I always though Clive Burr had a more frantic speedy style drumming whereas nicko has a more refined technical style. Im not a drummer so I may be wrong on that, but thats my 2 cents.
@rodrigoglchaves i dont think that..clive was a tight drummer...nicko plays song in 2011 like he played in 1983..always the same patern over the year...bruce was a galaxy far from paul...
@cleotine everytime i come here and see my coment i feel i'm being injustice with clive...i saw maiden with nicko 2 or 3 times, but never with him...in despite of prefering nicko, to be able to see maiden with him on drums is a frustration i will carry for the rest of my life...i started listening to maiden with him on drums, did air-playing with him for years before actually started playing drums...yes, he was a very tight drummer, and played beautifully
Saw this tour when the World Piece Tour came through Houston (Fastway and Saxon opening). From the opening refrain of this song I was hooked forever. Awesome. I feel 18 again!
That's for sure back when I saw em in May of 2008 he started the show by running and jumping off the drum riser David Lee Roth style! He must not party as much these days because he threatened to stop the show if some people near the stage didn't put out their joints. If I was him I would've said "You better share or you're outta here!!!" lol
I don't think Bruce was ever much of a smoker anyways. From what I've read, he tried pot before he was in Maiden, but he never understood the appeal of it. I've always been under the assumption he doesn't like it.
I think today Bruce sings better than in the 80's. But his voice timbre was better in the 80's than today. It was more diabolic. Today he has not such timbre anymore, but now he has more technique. He is a more complete singer than before.
@mgf621 I completely agree. Much more finesse and greater control. And, really, are we going to be ingrates and overlook the fact that at fifty-two that man is still rocking our world?
@mgf621 actually ur right 100%.. he DOES sing better today..and the reason is the following: the voice of a male is not fully developed until 30 or even more, and the best time for a male singer is when he is 40- 50 where the voice is matured enough (given that he is taking care of himself, and as far as i know Bruce does)...
@jimmyshitbags yeah this is a general rule.and an important factor is that they are very cautious with their voice..and as far as i know Bruce Dickinson is taking care his voice very much..i dodnt know though about James...however, why u say that? i saw James 3 years ago and his voice is really really good and much better from his 20's in my opinion..u saw him recently?
@lionnew last time I saw them live was in about 2009, he sings really "clean" now rather than his old growling/snarling style, as if he thinks he's gonna lose his voice altogether if he really goes for it now. I think his voice peaked somewhere in the 90s then declined in the noughties.
My fave example of hetfield singing is actually on the "kenny goes to hell" bit he recorded for the south park movie, lol. check that out if you don't know what I mean, it rocks.
@jimmyshitbags oh thanks for the reference, yeah he is really good in dat song..i saw James in Chicago in 2009 as well, and yes thats true, he doesnt have his old growling/snarling style..but his voice is is still very powerful..and as u pointed out his voice kinda declined after th 90's and maybe is due to the past alcohol issues..But in general, he is still really good, i like him alot..
Dude bruce is way better now, look up any recent performances, his range is much better now, and he doesn't crack during some gigs like in the 80s. For instance, his vocal performance on the Live After Death CD, is really shakey in my opinion at times, now he's way better at controlling his power. He can definitely play with madness.
@panzersix actually, He is a much better singer now. So much more control. Also he cops out on nothing now. Hits every single note every single time.
I saw Van Halen's 1984 tour in St Paul Minnesota. I wasn't very inpressed. David Lee Roth seemed very drunk. I'm assuming there earlier shows might have had more edge. Shows like DIO, Maiden & ACDC in the 80's were the best of Metal
That's what I've heard. And judging from the Dio video I have from 1984, that would have been one helluva show. Vivian Campbell shreds! Def Leppard is lucky to have him these days.
I saw Def Leppard open for Bill Squire in 1982 at the old Met Center in Bloomington, MN. I belive Def Leppard was touring off there High 'n' Dry album. They actually use to sound like Hard Rock/Metal back then. Def Leppard put on a great show and blew away Bill Squire.
I think in 80's he had better voice, he was younger etc. Now his voice is a little worse [mainly in high parts], but his skills are much better than in 80's.
I'm listening to the Beast Over Hammersmith cd of an '82 show a little before Number of the Beast was released. Damn good stuff! You can hear Bruce still breaking in the Di'anno era songs and also the Number of the Beast songs. He hadn't quite polished his craft yet but still sounded great. It just goes to show that people need to go easier on Blaze Bayley for his live performances with Maiden.
Yeah their longer ones just have that epic feel to it that you don't get with many other bands.
What I'm about to say is NOT an insult, just an observation. I've been noticing that the fans who tend to list Maiden's newer songs or albums tend to be the younger fans. I just find it interesting. I suppose it's because those were the new ones when you started listening. I started listening in the early 90's but prefer their 80's albums, but hey that's me. They're all good.
Saying that I love or even like everything that a band has ever done is something I can't say about hardly any other band, except, for me, maybe Slayer, Lamb of God and Pink Floyd lol.
But Iron Maiden is a whole different level!
btw, I think that Dream Theater did a great cover of To Tame A Land, imho, and I'm not much for Maiden covers.
Awesome! Yeah I like Floyd from a progressive standpoint (Animals is my favorite album of theirs, 5 songs but 3 are 10 to 17 minutes long.). I'm thinking of listing all the bands I like on my channel. Not now but when i have time and feel like it. I like pretty much all kinds of metal, and some classic rock, some blues.
One of the reasons I got into Iron Maiden's 80s stuff was because my dad had it on vinyl and I said to myself "Wow this looks like a cool album it has a zombie in a straitjacket on it!!! (The Piece of Mind cover)". So I listened to it and I became a fan :)
Cool! Just shows how important artwork was and is for albums. I got into them back in 89 (age 11). My older brother was playing a mix tape his friend made, which had "Can I Play With Madness, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Losfer Words, Wasted Years, The Clairvoyant and The Number of The Beast", also some Danzig, Manowar, Helloween, King Diamond, whatever else. Maiden was instantly my favorite. Then I saw the cover for The Number of the Beast album and was almost scared to hear it but I loved it!
Yep album covers are as important as the music. I discovered a lot of music going through my parents record collection and listening to the ones with cool covers. And with the advent of digital music and cd's you really miss out on the cool cover artwork you would see on a 12" vinyl and potentially become a fan by buying the record for the artwork. I know for a fact the only reason I originally bought Danzig 1 on vinyl was because of the big skull on the front. The music happened to be good too!
Of course the music is the most important part. I was just saying that sometimes striking album covers can grab your attention and potentially persuade you into buying an album you otherwise probably wouldn't have purchased, more so with a band you may not be familiar with.
Album covers are as important to the music. The kings of album cover art were Iron Maiden (every Eddie was different), Pink Floyd (everything from psychedelic art to prisms to guy shaking hands with man on fire to flying pigs to walls to beds on a beach), Rush, Genesis. Damn shame kids are getting ripped off in the retarded iPod age. I still buy LPs and CDs. The mini LP CD sleeves are awesome as they remind me of when I had LPs. Screw the MP3 generation!
What got me into Iron Maiden was Somewhere in Time's artwork and the video for "Wasted Years" which MTV (when it meant MUSIC TELEVISION) played consistently. 23 years on, still am a fan of Iron Maiden's to this day though I didn't like the Blaze Bayley albums. Piece of Mind was the album that put Iron Maiden in the spotlight for keeps as far as metal legends go (was the group's first US Top 20 Platinum selling album).
so.... of you think maiden are shit, why do you come on and watch a maiden video.. to try and piss people off?? what the hell is wrong with people like you.... if you can name a band that are as good as maiden and are still around kicking ass today, be my guest. they are on the of, if not, the most influential metal band of all time.

@jimmyshitbags yeah this is a general rule.and an important factor is that they are very cautious with their voice..and as far as i know Bruce Dickinson is taking care his voice very much..i dodnt know though about James...however, why u say that? i saw James 3 years ago and his voice is really really good and much better from his 20's in my opinion..u saw him recently?
lionnew 2 weeks ago
@lionnew last time I saw them live was in about 2009, he sings really "clean" now rather than his old growling/snarling style, as if he thinks he's gonna lose his voice altogether if he really goes for it now. I think his voice peaked somewhere in the 90s then declined in the noughties.
My fave example of hetfield singing is actually on the "kenny goes to hell" bit he recorded for the south park movie, lol. check that out if you don't know what I mean, it rocks.
jimmyshitbags 2 weeks ago
@jimmyshitbags oh thanks for the reference, yeah he is really good in dat song..i saw James in Chicago in 2009 as well, and yes thats true, he doesnt have his old growling/snarling style..but his voice is is still very powerful..and as u pointed out his voice kinda declined after th 90's and maybe is due to the past alcohol issues..But in general, he is still really good, i like him alot..

@panzersix
Dude bruce is way better now, look up any recent performances, his range is much better now, and he doesn't crack during some gigs like in the 80s. For instance, his vocal performance on the Live After Death CD, is really shakey in my opinion at times, now he's way better at controlling his power. He can definitely play with madness.
awienczak 1 year ago 3
@panzersix I disagree 100% , Bruce's voice is just as good as ever .
badreligion1231 1 year ago 3
@panzersix actually, He is a much better singer now. So much more control. Also he cops out on nothing now. Hits every single note every single time.

gabi326jjk 2 years ago 6
I saw this 1983 tour. No better live concerts than Maiden and AC/DC in the early to mid 80's
swlabr21 2 years ago
What about Van Halen? They were supposed to be pretty formidable back in the day.
dantes1815 2 years ago
I saw Van Halen's 1984 tour in St Paul Minnesota. I wasn't very inpressed. David Lee Roth seemed very drunk. I'm assuming there earlier shows might have had more edge. Shows like DIO, Maiden & ACDC in the 80's were the best of Metal
swlabr21 2 years ago 2
That's what I've heard. And judging from the Dio video I have from 1984, that would have been one helluva show. Vivian Campbell shreds! Def Leppard is lucky to have him these days.
dantes1815 2 years ago
I saw Def Leppard open for Bill Squire in 1982 at the old Met Center in Bloomington, MN. I belive Def Leppard was touring off there High 'n' Dry album. They actually use to sound like Hard Rock/Metal back then. Def Leppard put on a great show and blew away Bill Squire.
swlabr21 2 years ago
And Helloween back in the 80's their shows seemed great too i would say.

Priest was way better than both live.

Bruce's better show, it was at Hammersmith Odeon 1982 (take a look in 22 acacia avenue)

He has much more control of his voice nowadays.

I think in 80's he had better voice, he was younger etc. Now his voice is a little worse [mainly in high parts], but his skills are much better than in 80's.

Don't worry there's help for you, "More Iron Maiden" UP THE IRONS!!!
bbwbb2 3 years ago
Thanks, Doctor!
UP THE IRONS back at you!!
residualbill 3 years ago
Yeah i'd say
Powerslave
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Pascendale
Dance of Death
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
The Longest Day
Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg etc.
I mostly like long songs;p
vip1691 3 years ago
Yeah their longer ones just have that epic feel to it that you don't get with many other bands.
What I'm about to say is NOT an insult, just an observation. I've been noticing that the fans who tend to list Maiden's newer songs or albums tend to be the younger fans. I just find it interesting. I suppose it's because those were the new ones when you started listening. I started listening in the early 90's but prefer their 80's albums, but hey that's me. They're all good.
UP THE IRONS!
\m/
residualbill 3 years ago
Well mate you listed all the old ones for me!But i like the new ones too.Oh and i forgot to mention "To Tame a land" also an awesome song.
vip1691 3 years ago 4
Haha I hear you! I feel the same way.
Saying that I love or even like everything that a band has ever done is something I can't say about hardly any other band, except, for me, maybe Slayer, Lamb of God and Pink Floyd lol.
But Iron Maiden is a whole different level!
btw, I think that Dream Theater did a great cover of To Tame A Land, imho, and I'm not much for Maiden covers.
residualbill 3 years ago
Something freaky is happening, our taste to music is very similar i listen to Slayer and Lamb of God too!(not Pink Floyd though)
I also think Dream Theater's cover was good!!
vip1691 3 years ago
Awesome! Yeah I like Floyd from a progressive standpoint (Animals is my favorite album of theirs, 5 songs but 3 are 10 to 17 minutes long.). I'm thinking of listing all the bands I like on my channel. Not now but when i have time and feel like it. I like pretty much all kinds of metal, and some classic rock, some blues.
residualbill 3 years ago
One of the reasons I got into Iron Maiden's 80s stuff was because my dad had it on vinyl and I said to myself "Wow this looks like a cool album it has a zombie in a straitjacket on it!!! (The Piece of Mind cover)". So I listened to it and I became a fan :)
dantes1815 3 years ago
Then I saw the cover for The Number of the Beast album and was almost scared to hear it but I loved it!
residualbill 3 years ago
Yep album covers are as important as the music. I discovered a lot of music going through my parents record collection and listening to the ones with cool covers. And with the advent of digital music and cd's you really miss out on the cool cover artwork you would see on a 12" vinyl and potentially become a fan by buying the record for the artwork. I know for a fact the only reason I originally bought Danzig 1 on vinyl was because of the big skull on the front. The music happened to be good too!
dantes1815 3 years ago
Saying the album covers is as important as the music may be stretchin it a little.
The music is still more important
PennyDreadful1 2 years ago
Of course the music is the most important part. I was just saying that sometimes striking album covers can grab your attention and potentially persuade you into buying an album you otherwise probably wouldn't have purchased, more so with a band you may not be familiar with.
dantes1815 2 years ago
Yeah that goes for a few movies too.
I especially like these stylish hand drawn cover's like Indiana Jones and Star Wars that sort of thing.
PennyDreadful1 2 years ago
Album covers are as important to the music. The kings of album cover art were Iron Maiden (every Eddie was different), Pink Floyd (everything from psychedelic art to prisms to guy shaking hands with man on fire to flying pigs to walls to beds on a beach), Rush, Genesis. Damn shame kids are getting ripped off in the retarded iPod age. I still buy LPs and CDs. The mini LP CD sleeves are awesome as they remind me of when I had LPs. Screw the MP3 generation!
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago 3
I still love those first 4 Danzig albums. Great stuff.
residualbill 3 years ago
What got me into Iron Maiden was Somewhere in Time's artwork and the video for "Wasted Years" which MTV (when it meant MUSIC TELEVISION) played consistently. 23 years on, still am a fan of Iron Maiden's to this day though I didn't like the Blaze Bayley albums. Piece of Mind was the album that put Iron Maiden in the spotlight for keeps as far as metal legends go (was the group's first US Top 20 Platinum selling album).
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago
Funny how u stopped with 9 songs but I can list at least 100 priest songs that are my favorite off the top of my head. Priest owns maiden!!!!
