A guy whom i use to work with did the dominant handshake to me when i bumped into him. It look strange and i remember stalling. Then decided to proceed with the shake. Now i understand what he was trying to achieve and the type of character he was trying to portray. Interesting. This is the first time I've experienced this. And it will stay with me forever
I see no "upper hand: at all. I shake hands vertically. I could care less if someone wants to twist it up, I have usually prejudged them before the handshake anyway. Nowadays, most people want to perform the "bro hug" anyway, so I am too preconceived with shuddering to notice any sort of slight of hand with the "dominating" handshake. Oh well, whatever makes you feel "dominant."
I think the difference is in the environment that you are applying this technique. This might bode well in a corporate world or in retail, but I work construction. If someone were to knowingly apply an undeserved dominating handshake, they would likely get their wrist twisted. All subliminal thoughts aside, if the person couldn't perform their job, they and their dominating handshake would be getting their money and hitting the road.
Same to you. And , nobody is arguing. I am honestly too tired at this point to get into a long drawn out philosophical argument. If you like the ideas great, if not, thats fine as well.
Even in construction there are uses for this. You can find them if you wish to be creative enough.
What programming technique does the speaker say Obama uses in his speeches? It seems fascinating and I am interested in learning about that technique.
He is using something called, NLP- Neuro Linguistic Programming...its a form of conversational hypnosis. There are too many techniques that he uses to really believe that it is by accident or natural. Many experts believe he has had some form of coaching or training but of course, that is all speculation. Look it up, "Neuro Linguistic Programming."
If more people become aware of the "magic of the handshake", will this not become rendered ineffective and exposed as a form of underhanded (er, overhanded) manipulation?
From now on if anyone uses these techniques on me, I'm going to call them out on it.

Question about that 'dominating handshake': Why would anyone want to use it? How would causing your business acquaintance or friend to feel 'dominated' be helpful for your relationship?
It is very important to use it. In business and in social settings. The more dominant person controls the interaction and makes you more persuasive and influential.
Dominant people are the successful in our society with both the opposite sex as well as business. So do that handshake (just not to your boss.)
A question that was brought on by the topic above.
You do move your feet around, a certain posture you take which reminds me of someone I used to know; legs spread, bouncing, sort of a stance for defense. I assumed was common with karate, people who trained in martial arts. Sort of "a fighters stance".
It always made me very nervous, felt some dishonesty with this person, a bit of a "sleazy" feeling. Perhaps because it was overbearing and too confident? Is there a name for this? Thanks.
Now of course, some people are going to have bad associations with certain techniques (ie. you have a friend who did this that you thought was sleezy) and sadly there is nothing really to be done to protect against that.
The way I move my feet is honestly natural (and I assume that stance after 10 years of martial arts training) however if you notice the stance I take is confident, I am taking up space- a stance indicative of confident people.
And while there is no name, I do suggest people adopt this stance as opposed to any other even if they run the risk of being seen as "over confident". Better to be seen as overconfident than under confident (think Jeremy Piven in Entourage as Ari Gold. Yes, he is a prick, yes he is obviously overcompensatingly confident, but he is also hugely successful! I do not suggest being like this but better to be him than to be somebody who is lacking confidence.) Hope that helps, thanks for your comment!

This would probably be interesting if I could understand a single word the guy was saying.
Next time give him a microphone.

Try turning up your speakers or the volume. We can hear just fine. Although a mic def wouldnt hurt.

Hey Kingbaby,
Lol, it is different when I am speaking. Here I am not using my hands to illustrate my speech but rather to keep peoples attention.
Its also why I move around a lot...so people are constantly having to re-focus and therefore pay attention!
However, I could use work on limiting my hand movements just a tad more. Even I and especially I, am still working on myself. ;-)

yehuda, you talk with your hands a lot.
didn't you say to try and limit hand movement when you speak?
