It's too bad that the only people who will remember this game are the few who played it in the short time it was out. The game just came out at the wrong time when arcades were dying.
2:55 - Liu Kang doing a flying kick? Seems like this game uses a mix of sounds from old Midway games. I can't decide if that's awesome, or just Dan Forden being lame.
@mud409 The whole game was made a lot of people that made MK, so there's tons of references to the games in The Grid. One of the character's special attack is a flying kick like Liu's so they use the same voice clip.
Nice video Nick! It's really a shame that people forgot about this one. Back in it's prime basically everyone played either this or DDR. I'm not much of a DDR fan so I stuck with Grid. A lot of quarters went into this machine. lol.
Ed Boon has said that the reason why they've never ported it is because of the weird hardware. Apparently most 3D games use three-sided polygons, while this game uses four-sided polygons.
i was fortunate enough to play this once in a 6 player setup at a IAAPA convention. it was probably the most intense gameplay ever experienced on an arcade platform. 1 of the characters onscreen was AL GORE! the player that typed in the secret code a few cabinets away from me was none other than Ed Boon. its a shame the arcade industry was in such great decline due to better consoles at the time that this game was so hard to find abroad. hopefully it will resurface in a respectable console form.
War's a lot of fun too, I used to play it at an arcade near me before they closed. Most of the fun of both The Gird and War is playing it with other people. Both games get old fast when playing it solo.
It's cool because the games would keep records and you could keep playing. So if your getting more then one cab for an arcade, check it out. But if it's just for you as an arcade game in your home, I'd go for something better.
actually now i got 2 problems, cause well it depends, i like really fast run'n'gun games that can be repetitive but full of action, but i heard that atari vegas hardware (what War runs on) is very fragile and can easily break, so its either War or a sega naomi with WWF Royal Rumble
Sadly, no. They had plans to make it on the PS2 and they scrapped it. So this game will stay forgotten and in the arcades. It sucks because the game would work well on the Wii with the motion controls.

I would like it better on XBLA also. It would actually have voice chat and it would be easy to connect to games.

I don't see why this wouldn't appear on Xbox Live Arcade first - in fact that would probably work better, and I have both consoles.

Awesome idea. I'd love to play that. Hopefully I'll have a new computer to give it a whirl.
