If you really wanted this information out there it wouldn't be for sale on a DVD. Aquaponics is not complicate at all. It certainly doesn't require a 29$ DVD.
@valdezorbust Why should it be for free ? It costs money to make these things and I have to pay bills just like everybody else. It is rare to get such silly comments, but when they come it is most often from some over paid government worker who is accustomed to getting most things for little or no effort.
@MurrayPonics The other people who have such attitude are young collage kids who haven't had to work much and they don't have much expendable income , they are increasingly following the "give me resources for free Venus project or the zietghist project"
@valdezorbust and your comment certainly did not need to be posted. not everyone can grow hydrophonic and aquaponically this dvd could help them. so you saying it isnt worth it to some it might be worth it.
are all the nutrients the plant will ever need come from the fish themselves and the bacteria that decompose it? In your videos, you mentioned that the final product from fish through the bacteria that breaks it down is nitrogen. But that is only one of many nutrients a plant needs. How do you incorporate the other nutrients needed or do the fish provide all the nutrients ever needed?
@soccerpml21 plants need more than just nitrogen, you are correct, but you are forgetting in what ratios. most of the plants here (lettuce and cabbage especially) have little need for high phosphorous and pottasium levels, but when the ph is perfect and these elements are available even minutely, the plants can absorb them and therefore not be deficient. so basically, other elements than nitrogen do exist in a natural aquaponics setup, just not in abnormal and abundant amounts.
What type of plant and animals are best for a Northwest temperature?
Have you compared your data with regular agriculture and aquaponic plant growth? If you had can you share it with me?
I also need to ask if you have compared the energy and water use comparing regular agriculture and aquaponics. If you had could you please share it with me? Can you make a profit out of aquaponics? How?
Have you thought of having a Community aquaponics project?
Seedlings are grown elsewhere, The dirt is washed off and the roots are plunged directly into the clay balls or gravel media. That's it. The plant roots are submerged in water but do not rot because the water is heavily oxygenated. That's all you do. The plant will grow normally.

iam very impressed, just one question considering that iam here in the philippines and red pebble is not available what other medium that you can recommend or what characteristic of medium that i should find.
@DancesWithLlamas Right after "This lettuce in 24 days." when the fish swam by, I LOL'ed. "How epic can we make a fish and garden system?" And you know what, it is epic. Simplicity and efficiency, that's what the world wants and what the world needs.
Aquaculture is not complicated at all, only 6 points: 1) fish security 2) water aeration 3) nitrogen removal 4) neutral pH 5) solid removal 6) temperature. Cloud the water with algae, or dense water-floating plants to provide security and less stress for growth. Success of aerating the water is determined by the size of bubbles you achieved, the smaller the more successful. Do this by providing air and water into a water pump inlet.
Nitrogen removal is done easily by integrating water lettuce, a lot into the system in which it absorbs ammonia first, when depleted then nitrite then nitrate. Solids are removed by conventional filter. pH is adjusted by putting coral bones into the system, which prevent H+ combining ammonia to form toxic NH4+. Grow fish at its highest optimal temperature. Integrate hydroponic by adding water trays and water pumps if you want.
fuck world hunger its bullshit. my sister had a tiny garden in socal desert couple carrots squash and eggplant. and one tomato plant that a house of five couldnt keep up with. we gave tomatos away.
This is so cool! I have to get this video, I am wanting to expand my ponds from pleasure to food based and this looks like everything I need to know to succeed!
@shumebute when you grow in the ground, the vegetables take all the nutrients out of that patch. so next season, unless you put in more nutrients/fertilizer, you plants will have stunted growth, or if they are nutrient heavy, no growth. this system, is kinda self sufficient. fish provide nutrients in a cycle with bacteria and plants. just needs energy and water top up. if you grow peas, you can also feed goldfish with the few peas you grow.
I studied three years of aquaculture and this is a very unique system. 1. extreme Plant growth rates 2. Free fish and vegetables 3. tilapia are herbivores which means you can feed them lawn clippings or almost anything green hence no feed cost for the fish 4 the plants filter the water that is then sent back to the fish tank little to no waste/ no money spent on feed for the fish or fetilzer for the plants equals free food. and you can go get fresh fish and veggies anytime yo feel like it!!!
In addition to what odinreln said, the amount of space required for a normal garden is a lot larger than this system. Which this does require some careful oversight, you're essentially creating a very small ecosystem. The interesting thing here is you're essentially taking the role of nature to balance and keep things running.
The veggies in the store are full of poison and lack nutrition, that is why more thinking people are wanting to grow as much of their own as they can.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Just go to the store. Its cheaper and easier. This is only fun if you are a geek and into this kind of stuff but it does not make any economic sense to do this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I tried this kind of thing before. Spend Hundred of dollars on hydroponics equipment, chemicals, etc.. to get about $5 worth of produce. You don't even get enough to justify the electric bill from the pumps. It is must cheaper to buy this stuff at the store.
Do you need a chocolate tree and a chocolate factory to have a chocolate bar or is it cheaper to just go to the store and buy one?
Almost there, im looking for the final parts before i dive into it. People all over the place have seen roaring success and here in aus it's pretty popular, i suspect i may fail at it a couple of times, like i did with my basil, but it'll eventually take off, ill make sure of it. I'm too stubborn and persistant to know better =p
That is because in a mature aquaponics system there is lots of fish poo solids and worm castings etc in the grow bed. The grow bed that the cabbage came out of is over 3 years old. Three years of continuous production....fantastic.
I believe the Aztecs used to float bales of straw with food crops planted in them in the lake. If you can get straw or hay bundles to float, then you may be able to grow plants in them.
