Every region should keep their own language. Why is it so bad to argue in the regional language? The bad thing is only that there "are arguments". @ohshxt Actually no, Cantonese do not have a longer history than Mandarin. Those are just theory by some non-scholars but it never documented. FYI, Mandarin exist at the time when the archaic chinese language disappeared. Same case with Cantonese. You need to read more from credible sources. Mandarin were used as the official language in court during the Ming Dynasty does not mean that the language has shorter history than Cantonese. It did not appear overnight or by accident!

For example I asked a friend to read short texts in shanghainese, but he said it doesn’t sound good and don’t want to. Every region should keep their own language. Why is it so bad to argue in the regional language? The bad thing is only that there "are arguments". FYI, Mandarin exist at the time when the archaic chinese language disappeared. Same case with Cantonese. You need to read more from credible sources. Mandarin were used as the official language in court during the Ming Dynasty does not mean that the language has shorter history than Cantonese. It did not appear overnight or by accident!

For example I asked a friend to read short texts in shanghainese, but he said it doesn’t sound good and don’t want to. A Sichuan friend doesn’t want to speak his dialect, because he knows Mandarin and also prefer his family to speak Mandarin. And there are Cantonese parents, who speak only Mandarin to their kids.

So, what you have said earlier that no Chinese speak their mother tongue anymore is wrong! Mandarin is only spoken with people of other dialects. Bear in mind that all of them are from Jiangsu province but of different regions speaking the Wu dialect! Notice the variation of dialects in just 1 province.
