@xiaoquan Thankfully we are not communist because our ancestors embraced the British System, which is also not 100% perfect. The idea of dancing lions is still stupid. GOD created Lions is an apex predator, it has no guilt nor can it dance to entertain. By portraying dancing lions is an abomination to GOD.
LOL at all these comments. ppl need to chill. how is this disrespecting the Chinese tradition? they are just infusing new elements into it, not making fun of it or anything. this is just for pure entertainment so seriously there's no need to be so uptight and make a big fuss out of this
@alvinngheng When u talk about corruption, I'll tell u it's not uniquely a Chinese problem. Which country does not have corrupt past govt? Which country can safely tell the world they have 100% eradicated corruption? Even LKY will not dare to declare this. So, who are u to even say corruption is a Chinese problem?
@clarencechee77 Try doing business in China and you will know what is corruption. In singapore is legalize corruption all the same. It is a Chinese problem.
@alvinngheng All of your so called Chinese traditions of selfish ways to prosperity etc are all what the modern Chinese in China are doing now and they have lost most of their traditional roots ever since the cultural revolution. If u dun know how to differentiate between tradition and modern, dun talk. If u have ever been to China, then u will know even the Chinese in Singapore are much more traditional...
@clarencechee77 Have you seen stampedes in temples where Chinese people are simply thinking of gaining prosperity by fighting over the alter of their so called "gods". This simply is an act of selfishness, greediness and superstitions. Do they not think that their "gods" will punish them for their sinful behaviour or are they simply following tradition.
Hip Hop is not a traditional dance but rather the modern evolution of dance from various cultures. For example when they perform certain acrobatic moves, they are using certain Chinese Martial Art move and techniques. The problem is not whether the dance is traditional or not, it is just stupid to see people dancing with Lion Heads. Why not follow what cats like to do, scratching their back side.
4) My viewpoint is not that lion dance as a tradition should not be preserved; I just question why no innovation or changes should be allowed. Why incorporate pop elements into it is a kind of mocking?
Now here come my arguments. You have so far given a detailed historical account on lion dance. Your main points are: 1) lion dance is a symbol of the Han Chinese 2) it has a long history (btw, not >5000 but >1500 years, popularised since 南北朝).
this is like decorating neon, disco lights and bring a boom-box along during chingming festival on your great great grandfather's tombstone. what a disgrace..
We are Chinese whether changes have been made to our "tradition" or not. In fact, just think of how lion dance could have first be created. Bear in mind that there is no lion in China at all! If there had been no some kind of innovation and fusion of cultures, no lion dance would have been created. Of course, that doesn't mean that traditional arts should not be preserved nowadays. However, just remember that this is not necessarily the task of this dance crew.
@Errolneo From this statement, I can tell you do know anything about your own chinese heritage, cultural practice and the history of chinese identity. Obviously there is no lion in China, the chinese character 獅Shi was simply translated as lion into english but in fact, it actually means king of the beast. 獅Shi belongs one of the bestowing heavenly beasts like Dragon 龍 and Qilin 麒麟 and Han dynasty records show that Shi 獅 is actually Kong犼, one of the descents of the Dragon龍.
@Errolneo Kong犼 was believed to have the ability to voice up to Heaven/ Gods and brought message and blessings to humanity with its thunderous roar. In Buddhist symbolism, Buddha's teaching is known to be lion-roar ,symbolizing Awakening as a roar that can reduce to silence the cries, howls, bellows, shrieks, barks and growls. When Buddhism came to China and was accepted into the Chinese mainstream,
@Errolneo When Buddhism was accepted into Chinese mainstream, Buddhist monks found the element of 犼similar to simha (sanskrit for lion) , the vehicle of Manjusri Bodhisattva. In order to assimilate into Chinese mainstream, slowly a monk was added into the lion dance scene which supposedly to symbolize the bodhisattva. Chinese considered such 犼/simha and the monk dancing and playing around can bring auspiciousness and blessings because of its ultra-divine status.
@Errolneo Slowly the body of a 犼 in the dance was simply dubbed as 獅 by common people because they often got confused with the Shizi 獅子. Shizi aka lion was simultaneously imported together with Buddhism and normally act as a temple guardian and slowly, a guardian of a premise. The 獅shi in 舞獅 has a single horn, dragon-looking face and scaled body, derived from 犼, one of the nine children of Dragon.
@Errolneo Dragon is always a symbol of Han Chinese descendants. Because only Emperor can use dragon, subsequently commoner can only use the children of the dragon in the artistry of the common. That's why 獅shi in 舞獅 is considered a symbol of Han Chinese because the so-called lion is actually 犼- a dragon descent.
Lion dance is a combination of more than 5000 years old ancient Chinese symbolism, neo-Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism which is inseparable.
@eclipsedoctober One more point: if the commoners can only use 犼 as their "Han Chinese" symbol and not dragon, why is there dragon dance in the artistry of the common? If the sons of the dragon are the symbols of who you are, when do you use 囚牛,睚眦,嘲风,蒲牢,狻猊,赑屃,狴犴,负屃,and螭吻 as your symbol as a "Han Chinese"? I'm happy for you that you feel good of yourself thinking how great Chinese culture is and how strong China will be. I just feel good already of myself as a human whether I'm Chinese or not.
@Errolneo No cultural heritage and ancient civilization can last as long as the Chinese. If you break the link or tolerate/support this mocking of lion dance, you are a traitor (Hanjian 漢奸) to your ancestors, clan and your Chinese people. People who spoke against their own identity probably came from a background without any family lineage, aka bastards or what my British colleagues called - bad breeding or no breeding.
People, when you all talk about the value of tradition, have you thought of what this value is exactly? If tradition has some intrinsic values that should be preserved and not be altered in all circumstances, you should also practice foot bounding and arranged marriage now. Do you see how selective tradition is being preserved? In fact, do you feel you are less of who you are when watching changes done on tradition? When you really think about it, why should this affect your Chinese identity?
Lion dance is a combination of religion (taoism, buddhism and confucianism), politics( dragon-looking lion symbolizes Han Chinese identity) and subsequently our cultural heritage. Not just some traditional cultural value. Arranged marriage and bound foot have nothing to do with this special combination. I feel sorry for you that you do not know much about your own history or heritage , presumably your parents or ancestors came from a disadvantaged background who care less about identity.
@eclipsedoctober I just have some points to make clear before I'd continue this discussion (if you allow it to be):
1) By using "ad hominem" (attacking me as a person, e.g. "disadvantaged background", "bastards", "bad breeding") in your arguments, you don't make stronger arguments but only show how low you can be as a person (and you are still proudly a Chinese). Still, if you think that would make me look ridiculous, you are wrong; I don't lay my identity on what you say, I know who I am.
Everyone needs to take a breather. I don't think the choreographers intended this as a serious mix of cultures (as what others have been saying). It's simply something done in jest.
@aaronkyc We should bow to no one, not even to our Chinese Tradition, because we have the freedom to choose our own identity. If the lion dance troop wishes to dance with hip hop elements, it is their identity. If you want to bow to the chinese tradition, you can keep long poney tails and become the slave to the whites. If I am colourless, I would say Chinese Traditions are nothing but inferior bullshit.
@alvinngheng I would assume you are a Chinese and if so as Chinese we should embrace and respect our Chinese tradition. Whats with you using the term bow?
The second thing that makes no sense from your comment is that if I wish to "bow" to the Chinese tradition what has it got to do with being the slaves of the whites? Obviously youre just another brainwashed Singaporean, believing that the whites are superior. typical singaporean. licking white mans shoes
@aaronkyc Whites are not Superior, but their systems, technology, knowledge and culture are. Without their systems, Singapore will not be as she is today, she will still be part of a communist China with inferior culture and society. Chinese in the Past are slaves of the whites because they embrace their own inferior traditions. But if the Chinese are to embrace the white's system, technology, knowledge and Culture we will be the Superior one. The "bow" was in response to your previous comment.
Chinese tradition is all about family pride and selfish means to prosperity, desecration of the human body, creating abomination of the Lion form performing cult rituals and worshiping of several idols for specific gains, buring of hell money, waste of food, and the feeding of Ghost.
Corruption and political violence from past dynasties till present government all breed from following Chinese traditions. The Chinese will not move forward if they don’t let go of the past.
@alvinngheng Dude, shut up and take a chill pill. I respect your opinion but saying that white people's systems are the best in the world is like saying one type of chocolate cake is better than another type of chocolate cake. It's what culture you grow up in that shapes the future. And no, corruption is everywhere in the world so don't judge. On top of that, Chinese people today are following "pop" culture from the US and have lost their original heritage.
@Crazyasian123456 I am not saying that white traditions is the most superior. White tradition is about the same with Chinese tradition in the past, full of bullshit, idolatry and superstition. But the whites are able to colonised the Asian countries because their system evolve to a much higher state, they look towards the future.
@aaronkyc By the way we are not Chinese, we are Singaporeans and we do not bow to the whites nor to our old traditions. To bow to our old traditions is to bow to the whites. Most white people are good for nothing, but their culture and technology from some of the smarter white people is something. The reasons you are even reading this commens is because whites are the first who invented the internet. Do not try to be a goody goody by trying to protect our own inferior culture and technology.
Great Idea! Instead of letting tradition die down, it's creating a new meaning for it. This might even create new interest for it. The same amount of training and techniques are still needed. Just a different twist. Besides, this is for public performance, and not to drive evil/bring wealth to the office space.
I just can say it is an innovative performance, but not quite in a right way.
You see, our chinese lion dance have been existed more than 500 years. How the lion dance, the choreography, the spirit, and all those original moves have been injected into our vein. Any change of style will be resulted in an awkward performance. Good try, but uh... yeah.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is simply stupid for people to hold animal heads and trying to dance with it regardless if they do traditional dance or western dance. Animals don’t dance. I have seen lion dance in many Asian countries for so many festive events, and it is freaking boring, noisy and a waste of time. These performers are obviously bored with traditional lion dance and wanted to set themselves apart for the many other Lion Dance Troops.
@alvinngheng Evidently, you do not understand or appreciate culture. Lion dances are used during Chinese New Year to celebrate the coming of the new year, not to showcase that lions can dance. While I will agree with you that these performers seek to stand out from other Lion Dance Troops, the rest of your comment is based on your personal opinion and lack of understanding behind the meaning of lion dances, which is incredibly retarded.
@urgamage987 Ya right, I have seen so many Lion Dance not only during Chinese New Year. Whatever there is an opening ceremony, they will also just do the same silly performance. A lion trying to eat orange? How lame, to think that this performance can bring Luck and Prosperity, so who is the retard? Just look at how fuck up our world is after following the traditions of our forefathers. Why do people like to follow traditions which are not practical in life?
I'm not sure I like this very much. It's unique and refreshing, but at the same time, the lion dance has it's own significant meanings. This dance doesn't capture those meanings in the choreography. It's also the 'westernization' of part of one of the more recognizable areas of chinese traditions.
It's good that we're innovating and changing things. But let us not lose sight of the original meaning.
If you want creativity and innovation in lion dance, you should manifest the art of acrobatic lion dance performance where every step goes according to the rules!
Lion dance is not just a cultural heritage but a religious and political heritage. That's why lion head always hang up high on the wall when not in use. Mocking/demeaning lion dance is an act of racial discrimination!
This is applied to dragon dance and unicorn dance as well.
This choreography of Chinese lions and monks dancing according to his tunes and admiring him while he was flipping gives me one interpretation: White man's burden- telling us that white/Christian values are more supreme to the Chinese values. This is an act of mocking/demeaning Chinese dignity- telling us that Chinese will forever follow the white man’s way . These are the same people who fed us opium, looted our properties, land and wealth, and treated us worst than dogs in the last century.
@eclipsedoctober ya i agree with u ....... tis is the form of art.... we should continue the tradition and keep it well...... if they so creative then ask them to create their own head using different kind of animal but not for lion head..... shame on them......
@eclipsedoctober No, the more accurate way to interpret this is that many people here including you will forever be enslaved by your own indefinite Chinese identity.
@Errolneo It's my utmost honour to be enslaved by my own indefinite Chinese identity because my own identity is passed down by my loving parents and clan family- nurture and make me! I thank them for this empowerment. In fact, I'm the successor and the master of my own Chinese identity! It makes me more confident , stronger and proud of my heritage and history. With China's economic miracle and China's desire to restore ancient traditions, I am even stronger!
@Errolneo I am a Chinese, a descent of Yan & Huang Emperors. In fact, my surname is Huang and there is no family name can be more Chinese than 黃/Huang/Wong.
2) I was educated in the traditional Chinese way and you don't need to presume that I must know less than you do.
3) I do care for my identity, I know I am the person now thinking and I don't need to get it from what others told me to be. I'm of Chinese origin but that doesn't make me who I am. Whether anything changes to the Chinese tradition or not won't make me less of a Chinese, nor who I am. In other words, I'm not enslaved by the indefinite Chinese identity you have.
@eclipsedoctober I'm in fact very doubtful of your account of the origin of lion dance from 犼. Besides being thought of as a son of the dragon, it's also thought of as a 旱魃 (a destructive monster), which later tamed by a Buddha. The interesting fact here is, simha is actually the Sanskrit word for lion, 獅, thus lion dance was created based on it (popularised through the introduction of Buddhism). People then associated 獅 with 犼 and the concept got mixed up.
@eclipsedoctober In a way, it can be seen as a kind of fusion of the two creatures from two cultures. Since then, a lot of changes have been done on it based on changing societal circumstances, hence you see 南狮 and 北狮 which can be further divided. The lion dance we see today is an accumulation of changes for more than 1500 years. And today, we are still part of the history. Therefore, while there are people who do lion dance the traditional way, why can't we have others do it the creative way?
1) 犼 is pronounced as [hǒu], how disrespectful of you to "kong" your own symbol and identity! 有邊讀邊!
2) You don't share the same family name as Huangdi. Huangdi‘s family name is believed to be 公孫. Your 黃 is probably (assuming you are from southern China) from the descendants of 黃國, which was defeated by 楚 during 春秋. Thus, you are no more Chinese than other Chinese!
For instance, the cai-qing act where the lion plucking the chinese cabbage, munching and spreading out was first performed during the manchu ruling of Qing dynasty. This is actually an expression of Han Chinese wanting to overthrow the manchu regime- part of Destroy the Qing and Restore the Ming campaign. The Chinese character for Qing was written as green with 3-dots of water. That's why they must always use freshly sprayed cabbage for cai-qing act.
Lion dance is very rich in symbolism. Every move in lion dance has its poetic meaning because every move is meant to invite auspiciousness into the performance and the celebration. The performance is highly regarded as sacred and only performed in certain ways and in certain occasion.
This is HUMILIATION. Lion dance is not only culturally significant for all Chinese descent but also religious and political one. In fact, the dragon-looking lion itself traditionally symbolizes Han Chinese!
and somemore got people clap hands... oh come on people..... dun talk to me that tis is call creativity...... if like this then next time got people pass away...... then u all invite them for the performance during the funeral la... since u all are not respecting the culture... then wat for gonna follow... sooo sooo stupid~~~~~~ think la people.....
i share does not mean i like..... i just wanna show to people around us how this kind of stupid people spoil our traditional culture..... is too nonsense ok..... wearing those tutu skirt and do ballet and hip hop.... it shows low spirit to our ancestor and the god...... the lion dance is the form of art and god to us.... never study the history of lion dance then dun perform it... shamed on u guys..........
Come on...Traditions oso made by NORMAL ppl like us.......It's juz that it was old and dated back long ago so people wan to preserve it but.......Now we dun live in wooden hses , transport by carriage , travel with horses , going war with heavy metal armor and swords , having guys on street with long tail at the back of ur head.....FUSION is good but dun fgt the tradition way la of coz........Everything is created by fusion....Even we r fusion of female eggs and male sperms
AWESOME. Traditional lion dances are freaking boring anyway, and culture is an overrated concept. Just because a bunch of our primitive ancestors did something in a certain way thousands of years ago, doesn't mean we have to keep following it to a tee. In fact if I came back as a ghost 1,000 years from now, I'd be really disappointed if my descendants still held on to my beliefs and practices. Evolution is a wonderful thing, so get with the times already.
Why does tradition have such intrinsic values that no changes should be allowed? If this act is enough make you feel your tradition is being threatened, it just shows how weak your identity as a Chinese is. A traditional dance like this is wonderful and unique as it is, but trying to fuse it with some pop culture may result in something unexpectedly inspiring. Want to know why Chinese are often less innovative as the west? Because westerners would applaud even when people mix ballet with hiphop.
Come on, people, stop being so uptight and narrow-minded! I don't see how this shows disrespect to and deprive the value of the Chinese tradition. Is being creative by fusing different cultures a kind of disrespect? Then you all pure "Chinese" should be ashamed of how you show disrespect to the western culture when you wear the western white wedding gowns while having the ceremony in the Chinese tradition. The same goes also when you play Chinese songs with some western music instruments.
This is brilliant! Im a Chinese and I just dont understand those conservative minded Chinese dudes who are against such fusion because it goes against tradition. The world is blending, face it!
Which troupe is this, such a disgraceful act, Fuckup troupe, I bet you guys know what is it all about for Lion dancers out there and if this is just a gag post on Youtube I am fine with it, but this is a public performance dude! you guys should really wake up and apologise to your teacher!
disrespect to the culture... they just using the props to spice their breakdance and hip-hop moves, then go perform for a fee. can anyone provide me the name of the dance group, i would like to send them a warning letter.
stupid & disgusting white guy ruin the traditional culture.... stop the bloody shyt idea & go learn how to dance a better hip hop dancing, your dance move SUX!
And yeah, come on, take a break people. Stop flaming their hard efforts to bring some hype into the old scene. Plus, it's not like you'll never see the traditional TONG TONG CHIANG ever. You hear and see it like EVERY year all the time anyway. So just have some fun once in a while. I don't think they are trying to demolish any traditional habits or celebrations in any way :\ not at all. Just trying to entertain and wishing you happy chinese new year.
If they actually mixed modern dance to the lion dance art than i will be impression... most of them are just foot work... & the chronography is not that "impressive at all".
i dont see any of you haters doing thing about the singapore culture scene and getting views so whats the point of flaming this performance that looks like it has at least taken up weeks of effort to come up with?
the only good thing about this is that i don't have to endure the sound of the drums and cymbals. this group will only attract modern new age companies that are doing lion dances for the sake of good luck. even then, seeing from the comments from the people from the old school of thought, this new age lion dance prob won't be well received since it's precisely the old people that enjoy and require lion dance just cause it's cny.
alternatively, it might just make lion dance cool to youngsters.
The society is always evolving, and so what if there's a santa claus dancing hiphop? If your ideas are so old-fashioned and stubborn, you will get left out in the end. So just Shut The Fuck Up and enjoy the video, thank you.
sucks..if i watch breakdance i better watch in real breakdance with b boy..
this 1 liondance + breakdance? dissapointed.
i prefer the lion dance with the real dumb n instrument.. this 1 use audio system..i actually dont know what i watching..its like watching breakdance with lion custume like this if u agree with me
it doesnt look like a real lion dance...i just love the way lion dance does..it live like a real lion..that is what lion dance is all about..and the chinese drums and everything..it has a legend story, to scare away the evil spirit..now the lion is dancing hip hop for what ? to attract ang moh ?
Living a traditional way and respecting a tradition is different. Although we don't usually wear cheongsam nowadays, it doesn't mean that we can don't respect our culture. When people start to mix those modern stuffs in traditional culture, the culture starts to lose it's value. It's a good thing to be creative, but look at 1:25. Imagine santa claus wearing cheongsam 1 day?
Only people that understand the importance of preserving a culture will understand what I am talking about though.
@fuckliao then next time when ur family or relative die... i personally invite them to the funeral to perform for u ya since u like it sooo much..... and i pay for tat... noob........
appreciate their effort but can't help thinking that they have ruined the traditional aspect of it and even if they really want to modernise it, they should have done it better.
This is no more than a hodge podge of dances, like those you can find on youtube. The only difference is the use of Lion Dance props. I don't see any creativity nor innovation in this. In addition, the Lion Dance props are degraded to the 'backup' dancer status. What an insult!!
If we Chinese descendants cannot respect and be proud of our own culture and traditions, how can we expect other people to respect us?
@froggylittle Chinese Descendants? You still stay in Chinese traditional house? You wear Chinese TRADITIONAL Clothing everyday? You wipe your ass with straw after you shit? You yourself is not even traditional. Just STFU man.
I for one beg to differ, this was an amazing piece of work, bringing in modern influences into a tradition. Amazing b boying skills, clean and killed the beats. And bold too! Overall a plus for me! Screw em haters, they aint know shit. Dance mates, dance!
Main reason is because its more about that fucker in red shirt dancing rather than the lions...
If want to make "Hip Hop" lion dance.... DO IT PROPERLY .... make the lion dance hip hop ... not some backup that just move the legs and jumps a little....
what is wrong with the people nowadays...? if they want to create something new, why dont they create a new icon for what they did? by using the traditional Lion Dance icon is just an insult or disgrace... are they trying to tell people that Lion Dance should be that way? pfffffffffff
what the f......

eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
@Errolneo Kong犼 was believed to have the ability to voice up to Heaven/ Gods and brought message and blessings to humanity with its thunderous roar. In Buddhist symbolism, Buddha's teaching is known to be lion-roar ,symbolizing Awakening as a roar that can reduce to silence the cries, howls, bellows, shrieks, barks and growls. When Buddhism came to China and was accepted into the Chinese mainstream,
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
@Errolneo When Buddhism was accepted into Chinese mainstream, Buddhist monks found the element of 犼similar to simha (sanskrit for lion) , the vehicle of Manjusri Bodhisattva. In order to assimilate into Chinese mainstream, slowly a monk was added into the lion dance scene which supposedly to symbolize the bodhisattva. Chinese considered such 犼/simha and the monk dancing and playing around can bring auspiciousness and blessings because of its ultra-divine status.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
@Errolneo Slowly the body of a 犼 in the dance was simply dubbed as 獅 by common people because they often got confused with the Shizi 獅子. Shizi aka lion was simultaneously imported together with Buddhism and normally act as a temple guardian and slowly, a guardian of a premise. The 獅shi in 舞獅 has a single horn, dragon-looking face and scaled body, derived from 犼, one of the nine children of Dragon.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
@Errolneo Dragon is always a symbol of Han Chinese descendants. Because only Emperor can use dragon, subsequently commoner can only use the children of the dragon in the artistry of the common. That's why 獅shi in 舞獅 is considered a symbol of Han Chinese because the so-called lion is actually 犼- a dragon descent.
Lion dance is a combination of more than 5000 years old ancient Chinese symbolism, neo-Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism which is inseparable.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
Errolneo 1 year ago
@Errolneo No cultural heritage and ancient civilization can last as long as the Chinese. If you break the link or tolerate/support this mocking of lion dance, you are a traitor (Hanjian 漢奸) to your ancestors, clan and your Chinese people. People who spoke against their own identity probably came from a background without any family lineage, aka bastards or what my British colleagues called - bad breeding or no breeding.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
People, when you all talk about the value of tradition, have you thought of what this value is exactly? If tradition has some intrinsic values that should be preserved and not be altered in all circumstances, you should also practice foot bounding and arranged marriage now. Do you see how selective tradition is being preserved? In fact, do you feel you are less of who you are when watching changes done on tradition? When you really think about it, why should this affect your Chinese identity?
Errolneo 1 year ago
Lion dance is a combination of religion (taoism, buddhism and confucianism), politics( dragon-looking lion symbolizes Han Chinese identity) and subsequently our cultural heritage. Not just some traditional cultural value. Arranged marriage and bound foot have nothing to do with this special combination. I feel sorry for you that you do not know much about your own history or heritage , presumably your parents or ancestors came from a disadvantaged background who care less about identity.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
@eclipsedoctober I just have some points to make clear before I'd continue this discussion (if you allow it to be):
1) By using "ad hominem" (attacking me as a person, e.g. "disadvantaged background", "bastards", "bad breeding") in your arguments, you don't make stronger arguments but only show how low you can be as a person (and you are still proudly a Chinese). Still, if you think that would make me look ridiculous, you are wrong; I don't lay my identity on what you say, I know who I am.
Errolneo 1 year ago
Woah, there.
Everyone needs to take a breather. I don't think the choreographers intended this as a serious mix of cultures (as what others have been saying). It's simply something done in jest.

aaronkyc 1 year ago
@aaronkyc We should bow to no one, not even to our Chinese Tradition, because we have the freedom to choose our own identity. If the lion dance troop wishes to dance with hip hop elements, it is their identity. If you want to bow to the chinese tradition, you can keep long poney tails and become the slave to the whites. If I am colourless, I would say Chinese Traditions are nothing but inferior bullshit.
alvinngheng 1 year ago
@alvinngheng I would assume you are a Chinese and if so as Chinese we should embrace and respect our Chinese tradition. Whats with you using the term bow?
The second thing that makes no sense from your comment is that if I wish to "bow" to the Chinese tradition what has it got to do with being the slaves of the whites? Obviously youre just another brainwashed Singaporean, believing that the whites are superior. typical singaporean. licking white mans shoes
aaronkyc 1 year ago
@aaronkyc Whites are not Superior, but their systems, technology, knowledge and culture are. Without their systems, Singapore will not be as she is today, she will still be part of a communist China with inferior culture and society. Chinese in the Past are slaves of the whites because they embrace their own inferior traditions. But if the Chinese are to embrace the white's system, technology, knowledge and Culture we will be the Superior one. The "bow" was in response to your previous comment.

@aaronkyc
The Chinese will not move forward if they don’t let go of the past.
alvinngheng 1 year ago
@alvinngheng Dude, shut up and take a chill pill. I respect your opinion but saying that white people's systems are the best in the world is like saying one type of chocolate cake is better than another type of chocolate cake. It's what culture you grow up in that shapes the future. And no, corruption is everywhere in the world so don't judge. On top of that, Chinese people today are following "pop" culture from the US and have lost their original heritage.
Crazyasian123456 2 weeks ago
@alvinngheng Tell me, can you say that Chinese today are exactly like the traditional Chinese from 50 years ago?
Crazyasian123456 2 weeks ago
@Crazyasian123456 I am not saying that white traditions is the most superior. White tradition is about the same with Chinese tradition in the past, full of bullshit, idolatry and superstition. But the whites are able to colonised the Asian countries because their system evolve to a much higher state, they look towards the future.
alvinngheng 1 week ago

Good try, but uh... yeah.

It is simply stupid for people to hold animal heads and trying to dance with it regardless if they do traditional dance or western dance. Animals don’t dance. I have seen lion dance in many Asian countries for so many festive events, and it is freaking boring, noisy and a waste of time. These performers are obviously bored with traditional lion dance and wanted to set themselves apart for the many other Lion Dance Troops.
alvinngheng 1 year ago
@alvinngheng Evidently, you do not understand or appreciate culture. Lion dances are used during Chinese New Year to celebrate the coming of the new year, not to showcase that lions can dance. While I will agree with you that these performers seek to stand out from other Lion Dance Troops, the rest of your comment is based on your personal opinion and lack of understanding behind the meaning of lion dances, which is incredibly retarded.
urgamage987 1 year ago 15
@urgamage987 Ya right, I have seen so many Lion Dance not only during Chinese New Year. Whatever there is an opening ceremony, they will also just do the same silly performance. A lion trying to eat orange? How lame, to think that this performance can bring Luck and Prosperity, so who is the retard? Just look at how fuck up our world is after following the traditions of our forefathers. Why do people like to follow traditions which are not practical in life?
alvinngheng 1 year ago

This is applied to dragon dance and unicorn dance as well.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago 5
This choreography of Chinese lions and monks dancing according to his tunes and admiring him while he was flipping gives me one interpretation: White man's burden- telling us that white/Christian values are more supreme to the Chinese values. This is an act of mocking/demeaning Chinese dignity- telling us that Chinese will forever follow the white man’s way . These are the same people who fed us opium, looted our properties, land and wealth, and treated us worst than dogs in the last century.
eclipsedoctober 1 year ago
telling us that Chinese will forever be enslaved to the white man’s way, to be more accurate!

@eclipsedoctober ya i agree with u ....... tis is the form of art.... we should continue the tradition and keep it well...... if they so creative then ask them to create their own head using different kind of animal but not for lion head..... shame on them......
cheewai5243 1 year ago
@eclipsedoctober No, the more accurate way to interpret this is that many people here including you will forever be enslaved by your own indefinite Chinese identity.
Errolneo 1 year ago
@Errolneo It's my utmost honour to be enslaved by my own indefinite Chinese identity because my own identity is passed down by my loving parents and clan family- nurture and make me! I thank them for this empowerment. In fact, I'm the successor and the master of my own Chinese identity! It makes me more confident , stronger and proud of my heritage and history. With China's economic miracle and China's desire to restore ancient traditions, I am even stronger!

Errolneo 1 year ago
@eclipsedoctober In a way, it can be seen as a kind of fusion of the two creatures from two cultures. Since then, a lot of changes have been done on it based on changing societal circumstances, hence you see 南狮 and 北狮 which can be further divided. The lion dance we see today is an accumulation of changes for more than 1500 years. And today, we are still part of the history. Therefore, while there are people who do lion dance the traditional way, why can't we have others do it the creative way?

@eclipsedoctober Two points of clarification:

Evolution is a wonderful thing, so get with the times already.
vanquishmic 1 year ago
Why does tradition have such intrinsic values that no changes should be allowed? If this act is enough make you feel your tradition is being threatened, it just shows how weak your identity as a Chinese is. A traditional dance like this is wonderful and unique as it is, but trying to fuse it with some pop culture may result in something unexpectedly inspiring. Want to know why Chinese are often less innovative as the west? Because westerners would applaud even when people mix ballet with hiphop.
Errolneo 1 year ago 5
Come on, people, stop being so uptight and narrow-minded! I don't see how this shows disrespect to and deprive the value of the Chinese tradition. Is being creative by fusing different cultures a kind of disrespect? Then you all pure "Chinese" should be ashamed of how you show disrespect to the western culture when you wear the western white wedding gowns while having the ceremony in the Chinese tradition. The same goes also when you play Chinese songs with some western music instruments.
