IMO, this band is melodic metalcore. I'm not flaming anyone , because it's only my opinion. everyone is entitled to theirs, and I'm fine with them and accept them. I think this is a fantastic song and great band! It's true that there is a lot of discussion with regards to the genre of this band. I'm not entirely sure what I myself, would class them as. I don't suppose it particularly matters?! But what I'd like to know (without meaning to start an argument of sorts..) is, how would people define the difference between say, a 'metal' band and a 'metalcore' band. ?!? Does a so-called 'metalcore' band scream more as opposed to growl? Opinions are most welcome

In my own opinion I prefer Alissa's growl anyway, When you hear that feminine (sorry cant spell for shit) sound to the growl it brings who you are listening to in the song to the forefront of your mind and then there is also the fact that her normal voice is beautiful beyond what i could compare to any other band ive heard im sure there are better out there but its the way alissa uses both the growl and her normal voice together in each song that i love most about the music

I want to clarify this once and for all. Emo is for scene kids trying to act metal. You don't hear epic guitar riffs in metal - have you ever seen "Ultimate Emo Guitar Magazine"? No? Neither have I.

Emo lyrics are often about broken hearts and...well, broken hearts. Metal has a wider range of lyrical topics. This song isn't about breaking up with a guy.

Emo - and Screamo in particular - typically has higher-pitched screaming. Metal bands growl. Listen @2:09, THAT is growling.

If you use deep-piched growls (As you said that Metal guys use), it's what people seem to be calling "Death-Growls". There are more classifications to this, but who cares? In case of The Agonist, she actually does scream, growl and death-growl.When she growls, it sounds like she is screaming, as she naturally has a higher piched voice. Now stop discussions, listen!

She can get pretty high, OR pretty low (like at the end of memento mori). Screamo bands, from what I've heard, are usually just high. They don't have much range. Idk how else to explain.

@kasPWI Fry scream, false chord and death growls I believe is the seperation. Melissa Cross explains it in a video. Pretty awesome stuff. Fry is stuff like Bring Me THe Horizon, the high pitched bullshit, which I hate. False Chord is for instance Max Cavalera and Death growling is the real low stuff that most death metal bands do, for instance Arch Enemy.

@koshaolin87 As far as I know Alissa uses a distortion effect through the microhpone to achieve her scream. Angela does it all naturally. If it were down to which one growled better I would have to give it to Angela but Alissa has such an angelic voice when she actually sings I would say she is a far better "singer". I like them both though, woman fronted actual metal bands are cool in my book.

@Boosted6GN I agree, Gossow's more of a growler than Alissa, but Alissa still does her growling naturally, but you can tell that shes not as experienced as Angela is terms of growling because her voice still retains a certain measure of clarity when she growls (you can tell it's a female voice). SOME of the effects might be done with effects (banshee shrieks, death rasp, etc.), but otherwise. It's still a pretty natural growl :D

@pulsarphil most of the agonist videos are just that, videos. In the live footage she does make wrinkly Gossow faces, albeit few and less extreme, but she does. I assume it is tons of practice. For some people, gossow and myself, the way you look while making those sounds isn't as important... or we hadn't thought about it lol.
