Voice-over announcer also has a Buffalo connection; he's Jeff Kaye, who at the time of the recording was morning host at WBEN (AM 930) and former PD at WKBW (AM 1520). He later became the main voice of NFL Films, and still does some commercial voiceovers in the northeastern US.
"Move Closer To Your World". Best opening theme music to any show ever (although I more associate this tune with WKBW-TV in Buffalo, having lived in Toronto all of my life).
You cut this together really good. It sounded like the real news broadcast was only those two tidbits and then they signed off. It's funny cause the theme song is longer than the broadcast.
I've actually been looking for this, and had almost given up, till I found it here on your channel. I also found the longer versions elsewhere. Thanks for putting this up. You recorded this 4 years before I came to South Jersey. I know your Pine Barrens videos well, by the way. Thanks!
This station's Action News format with this music theme began 1971 - 72. There was a different music theme they used in 1971 when they first initiated Action News. I heard it on a 45 RPM promo and have been trying to locate it again ever since. Action News began when WFIL-TV became WPVI-TV. Gunner Back was the main news anchor on the old WFIL-TV news.
From WPVI-TV 6ABC, This has been "Action News", the most-watched news program in the Deleware Valley. When you see news happening, call the "Action News" tipline toll free at 1-866-NEWS-SIX. That's 1-866-N-E-W-S-S-I-X. Or call one of our "Action News" regional bureaus in Lehigh Valley, Wilmington, Trenton, or the Jersey Shore. Or log on to 6ABC (dot) com.
I still miss Jim O'Brien!! He was by far the coolest, funniest anchor/weatherman on TV anywhere. I was amazed when I found out that "Frasier"'s Perri Gilpin is his daughter!
Are there any clips of Jim on youtube that anyone knows of?
Was this audio taken from the end of the radio dial at 87.7 FM? I used to listen to the audio of NBC channel 6 from Portland, ME since the sound was a little better than what my TV gave back in 1987.
Don Tollefson was fired from WTXF, Fox-29 in Philadelphia on Friday, June 20, 2008, according to Laura Nachmann's Philly TV news site. (lauranachmann*com)
He returned the day before after a three-month absence due to a car accident. He was let go on the day of his return.
Perhaps there is an opening for him to return to WPVI?
They reorganized the opening for A.N. later in 2004. There was a orchestral version that debuted in 1995. It was pulled off with complaints 5 days later. The closing has always stayed the same, except for an EQ check or two.
FYI, MCTYW is also used as the theme for Channel 7 Eyewitness News in Buffalo (on WKBW, the ABC affiliate in Buffalo).
Even though I have lived in Toronto all my life, I get the stations from Buffalo on cable in Toronto. In fact, Eyewitness News in Buffalo brought back MCTYW as their theme in 2008 (after having originally dropped it in 2003).
No offence here, but I more associate MCTYW with Buffalo than I do with Philly (but I guess it's a small world).
Most of us know that WKBW-TV 7 used the same theme. Did you know that many personalities fom WKBW-TV migrated to WPVI-TV 6 in Philly? We in Philly are proud of this theme and Action News on WPVI and are not worried about who else used the theme, etc.
@TechnerVideo - Ignore him. He always points out the obvious on when these aired even when it is said in the description. He just copypasta's it.

Three great things about this theme:
1. The horn/violin section
2. The bongos
3. The pure exhuberance of this theme!!!
It's easily one of the best news themes of all time.
