  • Oh, I heard this only a couple of times as a child, and I loved this song. Funny thing is that I didn't understand a word back then, and now that I do, the words describe my feelings at that time precisely!

  • Smash the system..Toyah Toyah Toyah!

  • I think this vid/song captures how so many kids felt back then (and probably now) at how stuck up people were and sadly still are about education, clothes, attitudes and individuality. Toyah came from a wealthy family/private school, was a physically disabled child and dyslexic, stammer, lisp, and bullied !!!..but by fk did She turn the tables!! but never once become bitter at all those who done Her wrong. If you aint got owt good to say "piss off" x

  • When this video came out Im sure there was a whole generation that thought she was dumbing down society? How could she? Shes amazing, gain knowledge about the youth and not the medias idea. Knowledge is power, education is key dont blame rappers, there are young people like me with good parents who teach us not to be naive and grow a back bone

  • @daz580 There is a path..A path of Christ and a path of joyful living.....A path chosen of joyful living doesnt mean terrible things.A path of Christ is a tread of worry. God Bless You

  • Toyah is so cool - Cyndi Lauper owes her a lot.

  • @daz580 Jesus is just another thing to be free from.

  • 'Freedom' = Anarchy/Chaos, Governments exist for one purpose - to control other humans, thus true freedom never exists in such a society - only within the confines of the individual!

  • Wow! Such a long time since I last heard this!

  • toya rocks

  • i think this is the soundtrack to my life at the moment :/....

  • God this wos my song all them years ago got me throw a lot of bad time as a kid thank . Toyah ps your show in liverpool wos fab xxxLUCY LUSH

  • God this wos my song all them years ago got me throw a lot of bad time as a kid thank . Toyah ps your show in liverpool wpos fab xxxLUCY LUSH

  • I love this song -I love how it rebells again todays society! It shows you don't all have to be the same, Be you! Brilliant!

  • I love this song so much because this is one ov my enemy's least favourite song. >:D

  • @BioHazardDoom Your enemy? LOL hahahha

  • so bloody brilliant song just lit your self go and be free

  • Mniejsza o Toyah, ale na bębnach dokazuje ostro, późniejszy drummer Saxon'a Nigel Glockler!

  • be very loud....lol

  • ROCK 'ON!!!

  • Interesting song. This is the first time I am listening to Toyah Wilcox even though I have heard a lot about her.

  • some one help her to not slever when she talks

  • I met her! She was very kind and friendly!

  • wonderfull to see toyah again in her pop years,my kids were also brought up with her as a childrens presenter on television, irony or what.Toyah wilcox is great at what ever she turns her hand to.

  • The youngster need some decent Music, so let them listen to some of the old stuff like this! It might give them some inspiration to create new Music! Shoot Simong Cowell & all those other idiots for killing the Music industry!

  • she is my role modle she is so awsome i meen she just does everything no person would have thought of and she has such a uniqe voice x

  • music from the 80's is real music most of the stuff these days is just crap give me the 80's anyday

  • i must let my niece have a listen to this one

  • she class i love her music

  • what could she say to kids of today. their idea of life is taught to them by ciara, fergie, beyonce and a million other 'dial-a-skanks', way more repressive than the pre-womens lib times of the 1950s. If you do not act like you are in a porn-movie, complete with faux cum-shots in your videos, what could you possibly have to offer the world. if you are not having men cum or or pee on you, what value do you have as a female entertainer/rolemodel.i blame hip hop & a general dumbing down of society

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival

come on give us a break. I like this video and I don't listen to the crap you mentioned. Okay so it might be the majority of mindless knuckleheads but growing up with internet made me realize all the awesome music we have from all time periods. Good Music is timeless.

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival You're epic fail. But feminism is so cute! Sarcasm aside, you should pull your head out of you ass, or vagina, and realize how redundant you sound. Look at metal, most of the women in that genre don;t act like what you mentioned and are respected.

Maybe you're just jealous of women who are attractive and flaunt it because you're probably downright ugly? Of course that is just ignorant speculation on my part, but funny nonetheless.

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival

and shut the fucking door you lazy bitch

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival wow your so ignorant, I am a university student with goals and I listen to hip hop, new wave, rock music. I blame people like you who can create change but are busy fighting the wrong things, clear your eyes and gain knowledge of real solutions.

  • I cant even think of anything to write back. obviously you got real offended by anyone who is not into hip hop & R'n'B, so youre probably black.

  • @sheenanyc because it is the truth. I am merely giving my opinion about your opinion. And only those who have a sheltered and bleak sense of the world with no communication or true knowledge of themselves assume only black people listen and appreciate real hip hop. Get your head out your ass and realise equality exists and every race listens to various thing. If I said I was white you'd probably value my opinion more,if you where educated you'd know. Goodbye, I don't associate with scum.

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival the old school rap and hip-hop like Salt-n-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, Beastie Boys, and RUN DMC are great. The modern stuff is just mince machine dumb shit. It's about time that Radio One and Capital Radio stopped playing that shit and concentrated on people with more talent.

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival Good point about todays female musicians, but are you blaming men for the way women dress like sluts on stage today, renember the feminist catch phrase your body your choice, its their choice in how they dress and thats the message they send out by the way they dress, its 100% their choics so its very unfair to blame anyone but them selves.

  • This song is meant to be tongue in cheek and as camp as Christmas. So no, I don't feel that Toyah was taking herself too seriously in this video. And the song is stilll brilliant and inspirational if you choose to interpret it as such. Brill.

  • @LutherStarling

    camp ? Fuck Off

  • toyah was great back then long live da 80's

  • I love her image :P She reminds me of a sort of British Cyndi Lauper

I love both Cyndi and Toyah <3

  • This is excruciating. A desperate Siouxsie wannabee, who sounds like a cat being boiled alive. What makes it worse is that she takes herself seriously.

  • she now lives in a massive mansion in the country and writes about how much money she has in the Money section of the Sunday papers - im going to turn suburbia up my arse

  • I love way it looks as though she's being observed in a cell in a mental hospital!

  • EIGHTIES...STILL THE BEST....AVFC

  • So she's teaching kids to be rebelious-much better then teaching kids to walk around in next to nothing and look like a stick to be appreciated-I can comment like this cos I'm talking from bitter experience and shattered self esteem

  • Toyah knew how to rock-not like all these darn pussy girly bands around today-this is real girl power and a much better role model then the talentless half naked anorexic tarts of today!

  • I must say that I agree with you...girl bands of today are so mediocre and lack charisma or talent...'tis a real shame that music of today in general is dull

  • Excellent, I wish I could be in a room right now and throw everything around. Might get rid of some of my stress. Ah well back to the vid, thanks for posting it, brought back some great memories.

  • Comment removed

  • plastic cutlery ftw

  • oh my god, this IS a trip down memory lane.....fuck, i still love her!

  • Great 80's stuff!!!

  • The ultimate song of rebellion!

  • Its funny. her talking voice is the same as her singing voice

  • I used to bunk off school thinking of this song

  • ahead of time she was-

  • Great Toyah!

She died her hair different colors long before it was a EMO girl trend!

  • love it

  • i wanna get dis song on my phone

  • Its so true whats shes sayin lolz XxX

  • Clean synthesizer sounds, from the same i was born 1981 !

  • OK, so why haven't I ever heard of this wonderful songrwriter/singer/performer until TODAY? I came across her vids by accident on You Tube just a while ago and now I'm hooked!

  • very cool..and then she married Robert Fripp..oh well.. anyone just discovering Toyah Wilcox should check out the EP ' Sheep Farming in Barnet''...an indie classic

  • hot. with a cute lisp too.

  • god we had some great stuff in the 80's ... Minogues take note !!!

  • Are you still gonna be you?

  • Message for the here and now: "Blow up the TV Blow up the car Without these things You don't know where you are Burn down The Sun and all magazines Pull down the abbatoirs And all that's obscene Everything in life Should be totally free We should live and let live And all live our dreams."
  • My first crush

  • I'm still under this particular crush - please do not get me out1

  • we should live and let live..and all live our dreams.............

  • @leopoldhoob Yeah, I totally agree! Songs like this reminds us what life is for!!!! Not just producing and consuming, but singing, danceing, enjoying, to love one and another, nd turn this world inside outside, somebody upside down and blow our hair!

  • @leopoldhoob

    ABSOLUTELY

  • "I WANT TO BE ME.I WANT TO BE FREE!"

    Toyah, you are an inspiration!

  • way ahead of her time..........

  • I was truly mezmurized by toyah in the 80's, watching this video is a massive nostalgia trip! thanks for putting it on youtube!!

  • Powerful stuff, I'm surprised this song isn't mentioned more often when watching a retro/80s special on tv.

  • Apparently, Toyah lives in Pershore, worcestershire. My mate has seen her there. Still, as she is a brummie, its not a million miles away.

Strange thing is, she and Fripp dont live together!

The Teletubbies was filmed in Stratford upon Avon (well just outside anyway).

  • cool song used to listen to it all the time wen it first came out

  • She was beautiful..and still is

  • I always liked Toyah, although I wasn't really a massive fan of her music. However, she will always be beautiful and always be cool. The fact she's done voice work for "Tellytubbies" just adds to her wondrousness.

  • I'm bald....

  • It's bored !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol

  • "tear down the wallpaper, turf out the cat"...........genius

  • God, I forgot about this. What an excellent tune. Makes Robyn look so tame.

  • love ya toyah

  • still got my worrior rock tour scalf,,birmingham odeon 81 i was there and felt toyahs leg,,phil spalding looked at me and smiled,,,great post,,,any chance of angel and me coming my way..lost my cassette of chngeling

  • Gosh, wasn't she scarily beautiful--well, she still looks great (lucky Robert Fripp, being her hubby). I absolutely loved her--this song in particular. As another poster wrote, a highly underrated performer. Sort of a madder Kate Bush, in some ways. Love you, Toyah!

  • Toyah was a legend, unique and very underrated, first single I bought was "4 from toyah" (its a mystery).great

  • This song was my first contact to Toyah.

I was addicted to her from the very first tv appearance with this song.

What a small bunch of power....SHE WAS GREAT and SHE IS STILL GREAT !!

  • I'll never forget sitting in that horrid little town I grew up in seeing that video on a cable show VERY late at night. It was like seeing someone tell me "it's ok to be a freak..."

    I'll always love Toyah.

  • @SlippyFilther

your channel looks really horrid too you should throw some things about the place .

  • @SlippyFilther You see this is the thing. Your not a freak. Your normal. It's the world around you that is fucked. A controlled society that tells you how to think, what to think and when to think that suppresses what you really are and feel. This message from Toyah is so strong that it has stayed with me since i was 17. I am now 43

  • @SlippyFilther I agree!!! I wrote to her way back then and still have the signed photo!! WWiPppEEEee!!!!!!! I always loved her!

  • This video led me to be a mad toyah fan and was also the first single I ever brought too. My parents wouldnt let me watch the video as they were frightened I was going to run round the kitchen with the washing powder too ha ha.

  • This is the only artist i can class as being unique... its wierd see other artists you can compare them to someone else but... i can't seem to do it with toyah ... You'd find no one else like her =] x... very underated, but i reckon shes got the most faithful fans who really do idolise her... I no i do x

  • great song by toyah

  • a great song by toyah

  • the national lottery daily play people were not amused..lol

  • this song is responsible for some very strange looks when i was younger...still fires me up whenever i hear it

  • this was the 1st single I bought

  • The brilliant toyah my idol.

  • this song is fantastic was about ten when it came out she was the only female artist at that time

  • i still love toyah to this day,,i went to see her at the birmingham odeon 81 warrior rock tour,,i was at the front and touched her leg,,still got my tour scarf

  • Yeah go on Toyah rebel against the world, I wish I could join ya.

  • To me this is the greatest song of all times.

In fact the only great song, brilliantly performed.

  • "So what if I dye my hair, I've still got a brain up there".

    Brilliant.

I was only about 9 years old when i first saw this video and it is "exactly" how i remember it. Toyah was such a childhood inspiration and still is. What an amazing video and performance.

I'm still quoting Toyah lyrics even today and aren't i lucky to make the first comment.

    Fantastic.

  • Couldn't agree more. This is who these Simon Caldwell popstars should be looking to for inspiration. IEYA!!
