It is worth pointing out that there is in fact consensus among historians about their origin in 15th century Milan as a card game - it is only the occultists who don't agree with either the historians or frequently each other. (Egyptian, Sufi, Jewish, or Arthurian, you can take your pick from the theories - they all lack any foundation in evidence)

To her credit, Kate Mosse does not seem to be peddling a myth but simply using it to tell a story. However, it is sad that it is only through such myths that we see tarot portrayed in English language fiction when tarot has in fact a rich history without the need for invention. It would be nice to see the games employed in a novel of this kind, I dare say that a smart writer could use these to add a new layer to their story. They are, after all, very good games.
