also, this was from the 80s!!! many of the comments about how well a tool the computer is for learning seen here are only possible because of his, and others, work on user interfaces. it was NOT a good tool back then, even if it is now. and it might just be now because of him. i doubt you got all of your "certs" on a computer pre this talk btw

@spdemille Methinks you miss *all* of the points, in their entirety. Alan Kay is saying (in the 1980s) that the computer was already a good tool for learning, but it has to be designed and used appropriately to achieve its potential; and the same principle applies today. Computer-based training is not automatically a "good tool" even today; it requires good educational and technical design.

@mobilearn btw, have you even bothered then to watch the entire 2 hour video, or just this one response to a question? i was programming in computers back then, heard this entire speech in it's entirety a million times, and i can guarantee computers were NOT good learning tools before people like him came along. total bs. yes correct, he is talking about the need for good ideas as well as the need for good tools. BOTH

btw, the piano is the user interface to music. he's saying there are better ones to use or to start with. not so complicated

this is from the talk on user interface. he is not saying computer learning is wrong, he is saying it fails. and why does it fail? that's what he's getting at. he is the father of the modern computer ffs, do you really think he's against computer learning tools? get real. he goes into psychology and all sorts of aspects of human and computer interaction. why? not to get rid of computer learning tools, but rather to make them work. is it really that hard to understand?

30yrs later & people still misunderstand what he was saying. Computers like Pianos can be replaced by other instruments & technology. But first you have to have the original ideas & concepts to replace them w/. So taken out of context wrongly makes Kay's statement's a strike against Computer Aided Teaching. When in essence he's always been the the biggest proponent of getting kids into computers at an early age. Like w/ his "One Laptop, One Child" Foundation even today to get kids THINKING!

Learning by example often works. Monkey see, monkey do. Computers can allow people to do that. I learnt how to use adobe flash with ultradev videos online with no human tutor to help. With computers you can learn over almost any medium and of course some are better than others. The piano is one instrument alone, whereas a computer transforms into many tools and instruments. If he had said "all stringed intruments" instead of a piano, then it maybe a good analogy, yet it would disprove his point.
