the nostalgy for the roman empire, i know..., all in all i liked it, nice video and mixture of rome and medieval 2 total war, but the quality is very poor pal, unfortunely
The byzantine empire (ufficialy eastern rome empire) was not "founded" by anybody, because it was the result of the split of the roman empire in 2 parts.
yes, it's late antiquity. this is the year when constantinople and eastern roman empire aka byzantine empire was founded. the day of byzantium's fall is tuesday 29 may 1453
Rome fell at 329 but not the Romans, the byzantines who were the succesor of Rome (and they were Romans but much influcend by greece, but also the first romans were influcend by the greece very much) fell in 1453, which is late Middleage.
honestly i liked rome alot beter than medievel 2 just for a few small little things, like the fact you could see what your cities looked like when they werent in battle, or like how heavy infantry didnt destroy everything every time nomater what, i had it on very hard and 3 units of english knights with 2 armored swords took out an army of the mongols, when they 1st arive and have teh super training and amazing generals.
at least in rome a calvery could kill some stuff without heavy losses
Yes i do think rome was a better game win it came to going and killing another army. But outside of combat i think medieval was the better game. I m hoping with Empire it blows medieval and rome out of the water.
i think shogun still beats the shit out of all of them. imo though, sega sucks, the ai has been slowly getting more stupid (in MTW2 you ever have diplomats come to you and do nothing but animate like they want to talk, wtf?), and overall the lack of polish between rome and mtw2 (especially kingdoms) was almost unbearable till they made patches. i have no desire to buy empire till i've heard what real players are saying... again, just my humble 2 cents.
i agree, at least in shogun, the AI tried to outflank, use formation, and even ambushes (!!). in MTW2 they use the generic formation all the time and builds ridiculous one type armies (all crossbowmen??!!!). maybe because there wasnt that many unit variety in shogun... the diplomats are actually trying to bribe your generals (unsuccessfully), thats what the animation is about.
One large problem with the rome total war game, that they did fix in the medieval game, was that the spear wall aka phalanx, was nearly indestructible. In the medieval game, you could fight through them.
By the way, the phanlanx formation isn't indestructible. It's pretty easy to beat, just outflank them. What is really annoying is horse archers, just hate them.
In rome total war I place my men in a W formation agains tthe phalanx. At the vanguard of the formation I would place all my men in defense while have my auxillaries in the second battle line on the offense to flank around the phalanx.
Yeah, but I'm talking about straight up infantry and cavalry against greeks for example. In the campaign, I got really pissed because I had better trained men, but they couldn't get through the phalanx. And since they had my settlement under siege, their flanks were covered by buildings. I honestlt couldn't do anything.
@speakdino10 that was the worst fix in the game, if indeed you call it a "fix". The vanilla game had horiffic casualties when FACING cavalry, who should have been owned by running into their pikes. Nor, I think, were there few ways to crush a phalanx, as long as you didn't use crappy spearmen. A decent cav unit could flank a phalanx unit, causing the unit to lose its vaunted "indestructability". Or a legion unit...
that video just a dream...it had done side greek...The Ottomam Empire had directed to balkans 500 years...Anatolia 1000 years, middle asia 5.000 years...u cant accept it..it is real..and now,Turkish armys the biggest 4. army on the earth..

If you want this in english "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" It refers to the Emperor of Byzantium (King of Kings) and to the Cristian God (Lord of Lords). This flag was one of the Byzantium's main banners. The others were the one with the 2 haeded eagle and the one with Crist.
Unfortunatelly King of Kings is from psalms and they are from Hebrew people of israel from the tribe of Juda and has nothing to do with some Greek (slave)
Ok then freeman, tell us what the four Bs in the Byzantine Flag mean. If you know of cource. Look I have seen this exact flag in some monasteries. The only difference is the collour. The real flag is dark red with yellow cross and letters and not purple. Unlike you I know history and I know the most of Medieval banners although I am "slave" as you tell me. FREEMAN!

byzantium maybe be the roman empire, but it was completely "conquered"by greek civilasation especially since pope made a country of his own... byzantium;s language was greek, and greek centers such as aleksandria athens thessaloniki or konstantinoupolis where greeks lived were the centers of the country. nowadays byzantium is actually greece...
Byzantium was the Eastern Roman Empire, and although it had become Greek in language, it was still the Roman Empire. Fact is, even after the battle of Manzikert the Byzantines managed to rebuild their shattered Empire under the Komnenoi and push the turks back across Asia minor. It wasnt till the 4th Crusade that Byzantium was damaged beyond repair.
Not quite, they referred to themselves as Romans (and still do in Turkey), the West called them Greeks, post-Charlemagne, but the term "Byzantine" was used to separate the continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire from the destroyed Western Roman Empire.
you said"the roman upper classes spoke greek better than latin. roman culture was a bastardised form of the greek one. more than 2/3rds of the full roman empire was greek speaking. "
i was saying that given what you quoted was the case (that the roman empire was extremely greek) then how can one say that the romans where superior, and that the byzantine empire (which is obiovusly even more greek) cant be a waste of time or rubbish, as it lasted 1000 years longer. what i was asking was that if the byzantines and greeks where so rubbish, how could what i said be the case?
yes alright for that but you said in an other comment here that byazantines were bulgarians, turks,i do not remember well all these people like serbocroats, bulgars, turks were fighted fiercely until to be subjugated, turks were enemies always some tribal leaders were in the army of the empire truly but turks weren't romioi ever!
also europeans shouldn't forget we stoped persian and saracen expansion of middle ages!
it may have taken wars to bring those other peoples into the empire, but when has it happened any other way? and the romoi where the people who lived in the empire of the romans. thus anyone who lived in the byzantine empire, where at least nominally roman. ofcourse i know of basil bulgarslayer, and of heraklios and the commenus, but i also know that a great many nations fought under the byzantines, as part of bzantium. alans, scythians, turks-they all fought for them
well you are a little wrong we made wars to expelled them drom our lands or at least to subjucate them... we didn't want them you can find that some raider tribes were exterminated and most of them were truly barbarous raiders.... alanoi, scythians and alamani and others mercenaries were a quick sollution because many nobles who had power managed to destroy our army after the death of last macedonian emperor! they were afraid of the military nobles...
as you can see albanians(avaroscythics in mixed with greeks) scopjans (a modern country full of minorities religious and nationals) bulgaria (bulgars and other national ,religious minorities also) turkey (....) are our neighbours and their countries are on lands we owned in the past! so you understand that we failed....only until the year 1100-1150 the empire was somehow in a good seize and maintained army to defend the romioi (also a modern term for greek-romios )and their lands!
there your neighbors now, but at times they where your countrymen :)
and indeed i know that greeks still call themselves romans in certain areas. just as i know the orthodox church uses the emblem of the emperors, and that the turks and arabs still use the term "rum" as an alternative to greek :)
never ever would say countrymen these people but also in these times of late middle ages bulgars many times gave informations to enemies like the patzinaks who killed all archodopouloi cavalry.... only serbs were subjects by their free will also! turks were a plague as now they were raiders who burnt and slaughter like huns or mongols never countrymen as for albos they took priviliges during ottoman times and forced islamisations in area
before the sack of 1204 under byzantine rule were balkans and much of anatolia and pontus also the population changed after some centuries, islamisation, slavisation people became very afraid for themselves as constantinople and major cities couldn't provide them a safe life
it did expand quite considerably. it ruled much of north africa, persia, all of arabia, all the black sea coast and pretty much the whole blkan peninsula. before the fall of the byzantines it didnt rule much more than thrace, bulgaria, north greece and about 2/3rds of anatolia
persia, all of arabia you are quite wrong i belive! never byzantines ruled all arabian peninsula modern syria, lebanon, palestine israel and egypt was under roman and later byzantine rule until the rise of arabs and their holy wars, from then the population of these areas wasn't the same... now are arabic countries!
And i see everyone saying byzantium wasn't roman but greek, this is because the byzantines spoke greek - and wikipedia is far from reliable since anyone can edit it, especially in history matters.
And byzantium still exists partially in form of greece. The last byzantines fled there when they were driven out by the turks, some centuries after, they revolted against the turks. So modern greeks do indeed origin from the byzantines of the medieval ages.
originally it belonged to a barbarian state can't remmeber what it was called and got conquered by alexander then the romans after alexanders empire had split up
ok ok ok.... byzantiums wer just greeks who rekoned they wer as good as romans.. but no... rome conquered everywhere right? they moed the capitol from rome to constantinople when the fall of rome started to begin...
after rome fell, the peeps in constantinople wer just loser greeks who thought they wer roman.. the 'byzantum' empire was a waste of time.. they still shouldve reffered to themselves as greeks??
lol. not at all. the roman upper classes spoke greek better than latin. roman culture was a bastardised form of the greek one. more than 2/3rds of the full roman empire was greek speaking.and i would say that if greeks where losers then 1-whyd the romans copy them? 2-why are there greek style buildings from california to china? and 3-why did the greek part of the roman empire last for 100 years against everything the world could throw at it?
there are many choices in history that together decided the fate of byzantium. For example - in the first place, the spread of islam was a indirect cause to its fall.
But without the first crusade byzantium would have fallen much quicklier. The crusaders victories against the turks gave the byzantines a perfect chance to get some of their lands back. And they did get western anatolia and pontus back.
Truly the greatest empire, and two great total war games, with the fantasti Gladiator soundtrack... thank you for this video! it's a shame that the quality of the sound wasn't very good... but pls notice that we, hungarians took a great part of golding the turks too, we stopped them, and we fought with them the longest time... (and the Habsburg support was very little)
funny decimuscarrerus...putting Rome...753 BC - 1453 AD greatest and oldest empire the world has ever seen, yah the oldest but not THAT OLD lol it wasnt till c. 300 BCE that rome finally conquered the italian pennisula, i mean dude in 753 Rome was a small village, hows that an empire? the empire started around 262 BCE
Well, it's part of the reason. Byzantium got gang raped by the crusaders. If that never happened, maybe they would have had some money to make an army.
its a good thing byzantium died. that way we wouldnt know the world as we know it now. and it wasnt the byzantines that stopped them, it was a mix of mongols, timurids and the holy league
That is pherhaps true, the Byzantines stoped the massive Islamic invasion in the 8th or 7th century. Had they taken Constantinople, the still largely Germanic kingdoms of Europe would have been crushed under Islam.
byzantium wasnt greek. right up untill the end it was a multicultural empire, indeed it could be said to be the first modern nation state. greeks, bulgars, serbs, italians, vandals, arabs, goths, magyars, huns, turks, skythions, saxons, normans, russians and norsemen all lived within its boundaries at various stages, through one means or another.
dude. they werent greek. they where a bit of all i said they where.
seriously. wikipedia=crap. the last emperor was part serbian, the defenders where a mix of venetians, genoese, greeks, turks, bulgarians, serbians, and a single scotsman.
Real stories as in mouth to mouth? Dumb to trust that (eventhough you are right??), but still most byzantines felt greek ofcourse they werent Greek, man i could be part roman for all i care but i still feel dutch so whats your point.
my point is that you cant say a fruit is an apple if its orange. just becuase someone says something is the case dont mean it is. us europeans had a terrible example of things like that 70 years ago. the world has a load of examples of it today. things should never be taken at face value.
During the medieval ages it seems that byzantium's purpose was to hold the turks back from entering europe to give the europians some time to reach down in their butts and retrieve their brains. ALl the reasons why the fell are listed in the facts.
Constantinople was edge of Europe. If it didn't fall to the Ottomans there wouldn't be any Ottoman empire. and that's europe's fault. They didn't help us but they atked us as well. Crap. Every statue and coloumn in Venice is From Constantinople :P Constantinople even had Sewer!that's y every1 wanted that city. So much wealth, so much beauty.
byzantine campaign should give you no chance, sth like western roman empire in barbarian invasion. byzantines were lost since they had to fight arabs, venezians, bulagarians, goths, russians, slavs and of course turks.
their worse nightmare though was their civil wars (empires collapse from inside)
I absolutely agree with you after the sack of constantinople the cities population was 10,000 byzantium was so weak after the 4th crusades they could not defend itself and made the Turks look invincible. History will know that byzantium walls stood for many centuries against the invaders before it finally fell to the turks.
Hi, I love Rome including the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) Can anyone lead me to a Byzantine guide for M2TW please? Its a hard faction to play.
Byzantium was the Roman Empire, yeah it was more ruled by greeks in the end but it still was Rome, because of Roman Culture, Warfare etc. And they always called themselves Romans. Its sure one of the greates Empire, no other Empire changed Europe so extremly. And with Empire i mean the whole Roman Empire.
Alexanders Empire wasnt great it was only big for a short time, Mongols Empire also lasted only very short. Persian Empire wasnt so old like the whole Roman Empire(included Byzantium)
The Roman Empire the greatest empire in history. This is the story of the early republic of Rome. The History of Rome its battles against Hannibal and so forth will never be forgotten. Its legacy will forever live through out eternity.

Julii family because they are well known in history. The only problem I have in using the Juii family is that the lands to the north doesn't bring in much wealth than the greek city states to the east with the brutii family.
i like the scippi if thats the blue ones its a good challenge i dont like the brutti cause my favourite faction is the greek cites :) and yeah i thought your third crusades was good:)
both rule ;D but rome stoped till they got these popes and fucked everythink up with the crusades the turn against there fellow brothers byzantines

yes alright for that but you said in an other comment here that byazantines were bulgarians, turks,i do not remember well all these people like serbocroats, bulgars, turks were fighted fiercely until to be subjugated, turks were enemies always some tribal leaders were in the army of the empire truly but turks weren't romioi ever!
also europeans shouldn't forget we stoped persian and saracen expansion of middle ages!
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
it may have taken wars to bring those other peoples into the empire, but when has it happened any other way? and the romoi where the people who lived in the empire of the romans. thus anyone who lived in the byzantine empire, where at least nominally roman. ofcourse i know of basil bulgarslayer, and of heraklios and the commenus, but i also know that a great many nations fought under the byzantines, as part of bzantium. alans, scythians, turks-they all fought for them
bairdrew 4 years ago
well you are a little wrong we made wars to expelled them drom our lands or at least to subjucate them... we didn't want them you can find that some raider tribes were exterminated and most of them were truly barbarous raiders.... alanoi, scythians and alamani and others mercenaries were a quick sollution because many nobles who had power managed to destroy our army after the death of last macedonian emperor! they were afraid of the military nobles...
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
what do you mean "we" you aren't one of them i don't see why you bother with that term you weren't there.
drzsr13 3 years ago
as you can see albanians(avaroscythics in mixed with greeks) scopjans (a modern country full of minorities religious and nationals) bulgaria (bulgars and other national ,religious minorities also) turkey (....) are our neighbours and their countries are on lands we owned in the past! so you understand that we failed....only until the year 1100-1150 the empire was somehow in a good seize and maintained army to defend the romioi (also a modern term for greek-romios )and their lands!
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
there your neighbors now, but at times they where your countrymen :)
and indeed i know that greeks still call themselves romans in certain areas. just as i know the orthodox church uses the emblem of the emperors, and that the turks and arabs still use the term "rum" as an alternative to greek :)
bairdrew 4 years ago
never ever would say countrymen these people but also in these times of late middle ages bulgars many times gave informations to enemies like the patzinaks who killed all archodopouloi cavalry.... only serbs were subjects by their free will also! turks were a plague as now they were raiders who burnt and slaughter like huns or mongols never countrymen as for albos they took priviliges during ottoman times and forced islamisations in area
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
are you a student of history? how an english know or would like to know such things?

meh, no probs :)
bairdrew 4 years ago
before the sack of 1204 under byzantine rule were balkans and much of anatolia and pontus also the population changed after some centuries, islamisation, slavisation people became very afraid for themselves as constantinople and major cities couldn't provide them a safe life
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
and id be quite odd if i knew as much as i do about the byzantines without knowing where they where lol
bairdrew 4 years ago
ok,i didn't understood it,you maybe know much i do not disagree, but this about persia and arabia was wrong......
you read from prototypes translated in english?
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
i was referring to the ottoman empire-not the byzantine. i know the territorial limits of the byzantine empire.
bairdrew 4 years ago
ok mate!
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
yeah but not for long they took constantinople in the end.
drzsr13 3 years ago
I was talking about the ottoman empire after the end of byzantium?
Dutchfantom 4 years ago
it did expand quite considerably. it ruled much of north africa, persia, all of arabia, all the black sea coast and pretty much the whole blkan peninsula. before the fall of the byzantines it didnt rule much more than thrace, bulgaria, north greece and about 2/3rds of anatolia
bairdrew 4 years ago
persia, all of arabia you are quite wrong i belive! never byzantines ruled all arabian peninsula modern syria, lebanon, palestine israel and egypt was under roman and later byzantine rule until the rise of arabs and their holy wars, from then the population of these areas wasn't the same... now are arabic countries!
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
i was respondingto dutchfantom last time

the population didn't really change that lot, what changed decisively was culture and religion.

who do u think the turks wer fiting? lol

lol this comment was for the rong video =\
bennymcsex 4 years ago
And i see everyone saying byzantium wasn't roman but greek, this is because the byzantines spoke greek - and wikipedia is far from reliable since anyone can edit it, especially in history matters.
And byzantium still exists partially in form of greece. The last byzantines fled there when they were driven out by the turks, some centuries after, they revolted against the turks. So modern greeks do indeed origin from the byzantines of the medieval ages.
Jablopablo 4 years ago
originally it belonged to a barbarian state can't remmeber what it was called and got conquered by alexander then the romans after alexanders empire had split up
gangstamillion 4 years ago
true. just beacuse greek was the chosen language. it was the capital of the eastern part of the roman empire, there for makign it Roman.

ok ok ok.... byzantiums wer just greeks who rekoned they wer as good as romans.. but no... rome conquered everywhere right? they moed the capitol from rome to constantinople when the fall of rome started to begin...
after rome fell, the peeps in constantinople wer just loser greeks who thought they wer roman.. the 'byzantum' empire was a waste of time.. they still shouldve reffered to themselves as greeks??
bennymcsex 4 years ago
lol. not at all. the roman upper classes spoke greek better than latin. roman culture was a bastardised form of the greek one. more than 2/3rds of the full roman empire was greek speaking.and i would say that if greeks where losers then 1-whyd the romans copy them? 2-why are there greek style buildings from california to china? and 3-why did the greek part of the roman empire last for 100 years against everything the world could throw at it?
bairdrew 4 years ago
grekks may hav had kool culture... and SPARTA!!!.. but then y did rome rape the crap out of them in battles?
coz rome pwns!

there are many choices in history that together decided the fate of byzantium.

If it wasent for the Brave Byzantines, Europe probably would be a Muslim continent right now.
456Justinian 4 years ago
If it wasn't for the crusades, Byzantium would still be around today.
Empires91 4 years ago
That's not entirely true.. atleast crusade 1 till 3 got nuthin to do with byzantiums fall really....
Dutchfantom 4 years ago
Well, it's part of the reason. Byzantium got gang raped by the crusaders. If that never happened, maybe they would have had some money to make an army.
Empires91 4 years ago
its a good thing byzantium died. that way we wouldnt know the world as we know it now. and it wasnt the byzantines that stopped them, it was a mix of mongols, timurids and the holy league
ChezJamesy 4 years ago
That is pherhaps true, the Byzantines stoped the massive Islamic invasion in the 8th or 7th century. Had they taken Constantinople, the still largely Germanic kingdoms of Europe would have been crushed under Islam.
BroncoLion 4 years ago
It's not the Byzantium empire, it's the "Byzantine" Empire
hastati88 4 years ago 3
lol the byzantium was greeks not Italians...They speak greek they wrote greek and they where Christians Orthodox
metalas508 4 years ago
byzantium wasnt greek. right up untill the end it was a multicultural empire, indeed it could be said to be the first modern nation state. greeks, bulgars, serbs, italians, vandals, arabs, goths, magyars, huns, turks, skythions, saxons, normans, russians and norsemen all lived within its boundaries at various stages, through one means or another.
bairdrew 4 years ago
dude they were greek... look at wikipedia...
Dutchfantom 4 years ago
dude. they werent greek. they where a bit of all i said they where.
seriously. wikipedia=crap. the last emperor was part serbian, the defenders where a mix of venetians, genoese, greeks, turks, bulgarians, serbians, and a single scotsman.
ive read real histories, not wikipedia rubbish.
bairdrew 4 years ago
Real stories as in mouth to mouth? Dumb to trust that (eventhough you are right??), but still most byzantines felt greek ofcourse they werent Greek, man i could be part roman for all i care but i still feel dutch so whats your point.
Dutchfantom 4 years ago
my point is that you cant say a fruit is an apple if its orange. just becuase someone says something is the case dont mean it is. us europeans had a terrible example of things like that 70 years ago. the world has a load of examples of it today. things should never be taken at face value.
bairdrew 4 years ago
you are an english rubish part bulgarian part scotish suck off! you have read shit!
Laistrigonas 4 years ago
During the medieval ages it seems that byzantium's purpose was to hold the turks back from entering europe to give the europians some time to reach down in their butts and retrieve their brains. ALl the reasons why the fell are listed in the facts.
crackshack2 4 years ago
Constantinople was edge of Europe. If it didn't fall to the Ottomans there wouldn't be any Ottoman empire. and that's europe's fault. They didn't help us but they atked us as well. Crap. Every statue and coloumn in Venice is From Constantinople :P Constantinople even had Sewer!that's y every1 wanted that city. So much wealth, so much beauty.
Sobergr 4 years ago
byzantine campaign should give you no chance, sth like western roman empire in barbarian invasion. byzantines were lost since they had to fight arabs, venezians, bulagarians, goths, russians, slavs and of course turks.
their worse nightmare though was their civil wars (empires collapse from inside)
JHGKFHJK 4 years ago
I absolutely agree with you after the sack of constantinople the cities population was 10,000 byzantium was so weak after the 4th crusades they could not defend itself and made the Turks look invincible. History will know that byzantium walls stood for many centuries against the invaders before it finally fell to the turks.

RIP The Greatest and Oldest Empire the world has ever seen.
decimuscarrerus 4 years ago
It's not the greatest (mongols empire was bigger) and oldest (Alexander and Persian empire was older).
ResiduoIncombusto 2 years ago
Byzantium was the Roman Empire, yeah it was more ruled by greeks in the end but it still was Rome, because of Roman Culture, Warfare etc. And they always called themselves Romans. Its sure one of the greates Empire, no other Empire changed Europe so extremly. And with Empire i mean the whole Roman Empire.
Alexanders Empire wasnt great it was only big for a short time, Mongols Empire also lasted only very short. Persian Empire wasnt so old like the whole Roman Empire(included Byzantium)

Julii family because they are well known in history. The only problem I have in using the Juii family is that the lands to the north doesn't bring in much wealth than the greek city states to the east with the brutii family.
