Nitrous Oxide from pipe smoking

Nitrous Oxide is used as an anesthetic and as an aerosol spray propellant. I have heard that some studies have found that it makes you more suggestible and Imaginative. I wouldn't really call this making you smarter though.

hello my friend. i believe your friend meant 'nitric oxide', not 'nitrous oxide.' nitric oxide is a naturally occurring substance in the human body, which in short, increases blood flow by dilating blood vessels. though i'm not sure about its relation to pipe smoking, nitric oxide can increase blood flow, and conceivably, tie into intelligence. nitrous oxide is an anesthetic gas, not related to any kind of increased mental awareness.

Haha except acid wasn't really all that widely available before Einstein's death. There's no question in my mind he probably would have tried it if he was around during the time where it became more widely known (and he probably would have digged it). Whether he smoked cannabis remains a mystery....he may have sampled some during his visits to the Pipe Smoking Society organization he was apart of. If he ever tried cannabis I have a good feeling he would have liked it a lot and said more about it

Further, I believe it is indeed possible that pipe smoking could negligibly increase the amount of nitrous oxide in the brain, but I certainly don't believe it could make one smarter and the effect I get from smoking my pipes is of nicotine, not of nitrous oxide.

sorry to comment on like ALL your videos at once, but i just have to say....i dont know about nitrous oxide creating mental clarity. N2O is what the dentist puts you to sleep with. Also its what we like to call whipits (because it is used as propellant in whipcream cans) or hippy-crack (because it makes you trip, and like crack...theres never any left once you start).

I disagree as to the cannabis comment. In my experience it has far more to do with the variety of cannabis (genetics resulting in different ratios of the various cannabinoids) and the medium through which it is used. With cannabis I always get the same effect with the same herb when used in a certain manner, only the intensity varies with quantity.

I have "experimented" quite extensively with various legal and illegal drugs, and for me the effect of nitrous is either intense or nonexistant.

@LaKuPuLa the nitrous oxide can get to the brain because parts of the mouth (im not sure specifically which parts, inner cheek? tongue? i dont know) are mucous membranes, which can absorb the chemicals from the smoke.

when u say burns, if u mean a feeling same as wen u sniff tabasco, its ure nose picking up nicotine (nose has more blood vessels close to skin than mouth or throat) hope this helps

Interesting video.....I took up the pipe about three or so years ago. As of a month ago, I'm no longer smoking every day. However, I had always averaged somewhere around two pipes a day. It's truly a hobby, not a habit, with me. I know several who developed all sorts of cancer due to smoking cigarettes, but of all the pipe smokers I know, there has never been any reported problems. Does the study made by the U.S. govt. still stand, that pipe smokers live up to two years longer than nonsmokers?

Definitely. I try to limit my pipe smoking to one big pipe per weekday and I ensure I eat a lot of stuff that eliminates free radicals. Also, I go to the dentist 4 times a year and have him check for oral cancer

Nitrous oxide is a multi-purpose, very short-lived sort of information carrier to signal a lot of things in many cells and organs. It often lives enough just to reach a nearby enzyme molecule. For this reason, it is very unspecific and can trigger a lot of things, including opposite processes. It is also a free radical and as such can speed up aging and cell decrepitude (including cancer). Not that this will prevent me from smoking my pipes either... :-)

The point is, while higher levels of NO in the brain *may* indicate higher levels of activity (if so, maybe resulting from the very high nicotine content of pipe smoke, which contrary to cigarettes is absorbed even when not inhaled), this doesn't mean much "per se." The different parts of the brain have various and often mutually opposing functions, and it would be interesting to know which of them are actually becoming more active (if at all).
