Michael is a great disciple of the art form of music There a piece of Michael that's lives with us all. His presence is still very much alive through his music.
...like the many that have passed on; they are not gone, musically. I have always felt that personages that have left us (like Brecker, Trane, Fat Girl, Bird, Jimi, et al) were/are conduits for musical energy passing through them for us ! A manifestation of grace, if you will. I thank the 'prime mover'.
I remember seeing Ponta and Brecker perform together in New York. That was one of my favorite nights. This video is great. One of the masters of sax, with the worlds greatest drummer, playing a song together (I don't know the bassist, or pianist, but they must be A class) Why can't we have stuff like this on Australian TV? Made me join just to comment!
Mike Brecker was the most complete sax player ever born bar none.He mastered the Tenor Sax.I 've never seen any sax player attack the instrument like he did
I think that is the idea here, drum1953, MB said himself that his rendition of 'Say It' was his way of saying thanks, of paying homage to one of his closest mentors, if your will. The torch must be passed on, as others, mentored by MB and those you mentioned, will arise and come into their own greatness as new unique voices in a parade of new generations.
At 4:32 he blows a killer variation on a nice ii-V7 pattern that I've heard Bird and Getz and many others use... but Michael's variation is really hip with his outside modulation added.
sounds very much like a pattern coltrane used too. Accents on chromatically descending notes from root of II minor chord - sharp 7, flat 7 and sixth. On D minor, the Csharp, Cnat, B. Same technique often used to embellish static harmony (i.e. two-bar minor chords)
people will always be telling musicians how to play stuff, which in my opinion is not really music a musician should play a piece however it comes to them.
oh, we play our own thing, but, freedom is in the groove ye know? We want to sound like bird or trane because we love them. and if you can play like trane, then your a beast. the harder one tries to be someone, they closer they come to finding their true self.
Of course it sounds like Coltrane, he's paying tribute all over the place. Everyone gets so pissy when you say "sounds like Coltrane" in the middle of a goddamn tribute piece. Sigh.
How great that the Japanese have a show on TV like this. In Australia I haven't noticed any show that will play jazz at all. I miss Michael. He was really the cream of the crop. A really outstanding individual.
on the contrary hobojoe, the japaense have long been into jazz, and have their own excellent saxophonists... i mean hey some of the best horns (yamahas, yanagisawas) come from there
It's so amazing to see this cross cultural stuff happening. Coltrane in japan; who would have thought?
On the contrary, Austin, I thought that the drummer did a nice job. So often ballad drum parts are simplistic and "tinkly;" this one was nice and rhythmic. It was a bit heavy on the snare, but it gives it a unique sound. I suppose you could find it same-y, but I find it interesting.
That drummer sucks..... he played the same highly subdivided lick like EVERY measure. The piano, brecker, and bass were all going way above his head in intesity, while he just sat there in boredom.... Oh well.... Brecker is a Genious.
jimi hendrix is the guy who makes me cry .. he had not been always good but when he was good he was really good..when he was bad you could still enjoy watching him going crazy on the stage..its still inspuiiring
i know he played a guitar but he played it like many other instruments..sax.. trumpet...
not much more to say. Michael, you have inspired millions with your music. You have inspired so many young musicians to find their own voice and to make their music truly sing.
This is so beautiful!!!!! No more to say!!!! It makes me crying--that`s the meaning of a ballad -when played by such great musicians like Michael!Amazing!!! Thank You for the music!! God bless you!!
RIP Michael. You were the God of tenor sax for the last 35 years. Maybe if the US spent 1o% of the money we spent on blowing up Iraq on cancer research, you would still be here! You are the most influential saxophonist in my lifetime. Thank you for leaving such a legacy.
Michael Brecker is great, but there's something about this that I don't like. The sound of the other musicians I think. There is something very japanese in a bad way over it, meant in a cultural way, not racial.
Wow, it's amazing how much of Trane's influence you can hear coming out in Michael but at the same time, he definitely has his own sound and style that just make my draw drop. We will truly miss you Michael, you were taken away from us too soon!
It's not a matter of difficulty but the way you play it.. Wish I could play it like Michael..
