  • It's not a matter of difficulty but the way you play it.. Wish I could play it like Michael..

  • abolutely love this video/song!!

  • Does anyone know if this is a Brecker original? If not who is the composer of this tune?

    Thnx

  • @stephenruggieri

    Written By

    Frank Loesser, Jimmy McHugh

From the fourties. John Coltrane also played it. That's why Mike Brecker played it here.

    Greetings, Louis Gerrits

  • @stephenruggieri I don't know the author of this piece, but the John Coltrane's version is very famous!

  • So beautiful and passionate. Wow.

  • 1999、マイケル・ブレッカー 、村上ポンタ、バカボン鈴木~~“SAY IT”~勿論コルトレーンだが、決して悪くない! #jazzm

  • Michael is a great disciple of the art form of music There a piece of Michael that's lives with us all. His presence is still very much alive through his music.

  • quite near to the original version, great playing on electric by mr. suzuki...

  • ...like the many that have passed on; they are not gone, musically. I have always felt that personages that have left us (like Brecker, Trane, Fat Girl, Bird, Jimi, et al) were/are conduits for musical energy passing through them for us ! A manifestation of grace, if you will. I thank the 'prime mover'.

  • I don't think I've heard Brecker play a ballad till now.. Sounds nice.

  • god .... imagine this whit eddy gomez and keith jarret

  • can someone translate that bass player in the beginning?

  • check Michael face when they speak Japanese

  • I saw him three times in concert, those were the best concerts I ever saw.

  • omg vagabond suzuki...

  • ...definitly more MB than JC on that one! ;) But sooooo nice and smooth *melting*

  • Trane would be proud!

  • May I cry?

  • it simply can't get any better then this. unearthly beautiful.

  • pura meraviglia, assoluta sensibilità, emozioni ad ogni nota. Dovunque sei ti ringrazierò per sempre. Suona per gli Angeli........

  • bassist's first name is vagabond? what a beast.

  • John Coltrane nous a fait connaitre cette piece.Michael

Brecker l'a repris avec brio, avec intelligence.

  • What a musician, fantastic performance, RIP Michael.

  • He was lookin so good in this one! :)

  • q pedazo de músico

  • fantastic man michael...GOD bless your soul...

  • El recorte del bajista no taaaa.

  • Y el recorte de Brecker taa o no taa?

  • Vagabond is top bassist in Japan. Masahiro is chief lecturer for master class of Roland music, and professor of music at various universities.

  • I remember seeing Ponta and Brecker perform together in New York. That was one of my favorite nights. This video is great. One of the masters of sax, with the worlds greatest drummer, playing a song together (I don't know the bassist, or pianist, but they must be A class) Why can't we have stuff like this on Australian TV? Made me join just to comment!

  • Lol "Not the harder one, the easier one" And Brecker proves yet another misconception wrong.

  • 3:53-4:10 i love the piano chord melody, sort of wynton kelly

    Michael smoking of course

6:36 that note perfect choice, what is it? sharp9 on a dominant? can't be bothered to work it out and i don't have good pitch anyway

  • b9?

  • yeah you're right just checked on piano, it's b9

  • legend has it the drummer wrestled inspector gadget to the death for that trench coat on the cold streets of tokyo on valentines day 1982.

  • lol

  • LOL

  • he makes me cry......... thank you mike......

  • Damn, man. I watch this thing almost everyday. What it's all about right here.

  • A wonderfull song

  • I like how the interviewer calls the ballad easier...

  • maybe he means its less complicated harmonically, i'm not sure.. could be an issue with translation

    anyways, this is amazing

  • Could be "easy" as in not as fast and furious as JC's other stuff...

  • im really moved...i love this song

  • R.I.P. nostro maestro

  • he gave too much to us we must learn from him rest in peace he was very good in 20 century

  • the most beautufull ballad

  • 4:10 to 4:31 is pure melodic brilliance.

  • Fantastic.

  • God bless his soul krikor sax

  • vagabond suzuki is the best name I've ever heard.

  • Mike Brecker was the most complete sax player ever born bar none.He mastered the Tenor Sax.I 've never seen any sax player attack the instrument like he did

  • What mouthpiece did Michael play on? Any info would be helpful, thank you.

  • A Dave Guardala one

  • Awesome sax player. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of saxophone. No one will ever be as great as Michael Brecker.

  • Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sadao Watanabe, Kaoru Abe, Gerry Mulligan, among many others. Brecker is great, but so are many others.

  • I think that is the idea here, drum1953, MB said himself that his rendition of 'Say It' was his way of saying thanks, of paying homage to one of his closest mentors, if your will. The torch must be passed on, as others, mentored by MB and those you mentioned, will arise and come into their own greatness as new unique voices in a parade of new generations.

  • At 4:32 he blows a killer variation on a nice ii-V7 pattern that I've heard Bird and Getz and many others use... but Michael's variation is really hip with his outside modulation added.

  • sounds very much like a pattern coltrane used too. Accents on chromatically descending notes from root of II minor chord - sharp 7, flat 7 and sixth. On D minor, the Csharp, Cnat, B. Same technique often used to embellish static harmony (i.e. two-bar minor chords)

  • I love this song. So great to hear Micheael do it.

  • Beautiful!

    Thanks for Uploading

  • michael looks so lost when the jap dude is talking lol

  • "jap" is derogatory... just spell the word out please.

But you are right. He looked like he had looked a little out of it or lost at the moment.

  • And they say that it's not good to play many notes when playing a ballad...

  • people will always be telling musicians how to play stuff, which in my opinion is not really music a musician should play a piece however it comes to them.

  • Still so unreal that he is gone. What I do know is he was definitely here.

  • Bird lives.

  • mike is a big influence for all the sax players, its a lenguaje... a way to play... For me the best....... Thanks for your music mike....

  • man he can really sound like cotrane when he wants too

  • Alguien tiene la partitura de este tema? Podria intentar sacarlo a oido pero me llevaría muchísimo tiempo...

    gracias !

  • (saxo tenor)

  • this is the balLAD, not the difficult one, but the easier one. hahaha

  • GOD LOVE YOU TOO MUCH KRIKOR LIBANON

  • Sos el mejor. Pobrecito me da pena todo lo que sufrio michael brecker. Es muy sufrida su vida, quisiera que estuviese vivo T_T

  • oops..

  • fuck

  • Amazing musician, always a joy listening to his performances!

  • Concordo, il più grande anche senza la pelle nera.

  • Thank you Mr. Brecker, for all that you were, is, and will be in the lives of people like me and others that are yet to come.

  • Play it one more time Mike!

  • he was a master, that's all !!

  • thank you mickael, bye

  • oh, we play our own thing, but, freedom is in the groove ye know? We want to sound like bird or trane because we love them. and if you can play like trane, then your a beast. the harder one tries to be someone, they closer they come to finding their true self.

  • I don't know why the most sax players want to be like coltrane, or some other "giant".

Why not play your own thing?

  • Comment removed

  • he plays like coltrane

  • He plays more like Brecker

  • Of course it sounds like Coltrane, he's paying tribute all over the place. Everyone gets so pissy when you say "sounds like Coltrane" in the middle of a goddamn tribute piece. Sigh.

  • MMMMMM q delicia escuchar y ver al uno de los mejores saxofonistas de todos los tiempos.

  • Oh darn, R.I.P Michael.

  • Oh man!! Brecker at 4:10!

  • That chord-melody phrase the pianist does at 3:55, I've heard it before, who used to play that? Wynton Kelly?

  • That phrase doesn't belong to anyone. It's all of ours. Seriously, I mean that.

  • 私もこの映像をリアルタイムで見てました。あの時の感動をまた見る事が出来ました。99年でしたかー...投稿して下さりまして、本当に本当にありがとうございました!

  • Brecker's sound was so great, and all those sinuous lines...

  • Amazing! Micheal brecker R.I.P!

  • How great that the Japanese have a show on TV like this. In Australia I haven't noticed any show that will play jazz at all. I miss Michael. He was really the cream of the crop. A really outstanding individual.

  • I can only say: wow!

  • beautiful

  • What a horrible stage

  • Serious, I agree..

    Great performance..

  • Austin, the drummer is great. I don't know what you are thinking.

  • on the contrary hobojoe, the japaense have long been into jazz, and have their own excellent saxophonists... i mean hey some of the best horns (yamahas, yanagisawas) come from there

  • ya man i tried some yanis and the altos are rippin man, theyre great!

  • It's so amazing to see this cross cultural stuff happening. Coltrane in japan; who would have thought?

On the contrary, Austin, I thought that the drummer did a nice job. So often ballad drum parts are simplistic and "tinkly;" this one was nice and rhythmic. It was a bit heavy on the snare, but it gives it a unique sound. I suppose you could find it same-y, but I find it interesting.

  • That drummer sucks..... he played the same highly subdivided lick like EVERY measure. The piano, brecker, and bass were all going way above his head in intesity, while he just sat there in boredom.... Oh well.... Brecker is a Genious.

  • good thing your spelling doesn't reflect on brecker's playing

  • Now this was truly marvelous - - - both Brecker and Coltrane; what a combination. Absolutely delicious! Brecker will be missed, for sure. . . \

    jenny6664

  • 4:10-4:31 such a gift for melody, especially the last little statement. you could write words to this.

  • as in... to the section that doesn't already have words... also known as the improv section...

  • he means he improvises so melodically and logically that one could write lyrics to his improvised melody.

  • such an inspiration, truly Coltranes successor!

  • jimi hendrix is the guy who makes me cry .. he had not been always good but when he was good he was really good..when he was bad you could still enjoy watching him going crazy on the stage..its still inspuiiring

i know he played a guitar but he played it like many other instruments..sax.. trumpet...

    good luck

  • not much more to say. Michael, you have inspired millions with your music. You have inspired so many young musicians to find their own voice and to make their music truly sing.

  • this is soooooooo cooooooool

  • that was great. i think the drummer ruined the ending but by not coming in strong. apart from that, it was a beautiful ballad.

  • Wow I like brecker's interpretation better than coltrane's @__@

  • We miss you so much Michael. The greatest Tenor Sax ever.

Your Music will be forever with us. Andreas from Chile.

  • This is so beautiful!!!!! No more to say!!!! It makes me crying--that`s the meaning of a ballad -when played by such great musicians like Michael!Amazing!!! Thank You for the music!! God bless you!!

  • Excellent, Excellent!!! beautiful interpretation. What a incredible piece of jazz!!

  • C'est vraiment sympa de voir et surtout d'écouter Michael breker jouer coltrane un bel hommage

  • So why is the drummer with the terrible wig sitting in on Mike's interview.. dig that haircut and terrible dye job?

  • almost got an orgasm

  • I've got one!

  • beauty, amazing.

    brecker is astounding.

  • God be with Michael and Bless his family.

    Rest In Peace

    Greg

  • What is there to say!

We miss you so dearly Micheal Brecker, but your music will live forever in us!

    Your were fabulous!

    All the best

    Mario from Canada

  • PONGAN LA VERSION DE JHON COLTRANE

  • Michael Brecker - An American hero.

  • Wow! I love Michael Brecker and these musician's do fantastic job backing him up. What a great piece!

  • he truly was the successor to John Coltrane. Now the question is who will succeed the great Michael Brecker?

  • Saori Yano is very talented young player

  • but she plays in a completely different style- and furthermore she plays alto.

  • that was truly great. thank you for posting this

  • Great stuff... diggin' the shades

  • so beautiful

  • - great - interprétation particulière et personelle - grande sensibilité e l'émotion est là ! digne des grands ! thanks M B.

  • "digne des grands"...mais C'EST un grand, Mike !

  • i think that was possibly the best saxophone solo i have ever heard in my entire life.

  • He's so great, RIP. HEY EVERYONE, I just found this piano player who is completely amazing. Search for "Long vent: Improv on Piano." My jaw dropped.

  • RIP Michael. You were the God of tenor sax for the last 35 years. Maybe if the US spent 1o% of the money we spent on blowing up Iraq on cancer research, you would still be here! You are the most influential saxophonist in my lifetime. Thank you for leaving such a legacy.

  • Michael Brecker is great, but there's something about this that I don't like. The sound of the other musicians I think. There is something very japanese in a bad way over it, meant in a cultural way, not racial.

  • lol, u talkin bout the interview part right?

  • I mean the comping..

  • what's "comping"? Sorry if I sound ignorant, I just never heard that term.

  • The rhytm-section's "support" of the soloist.

  • oh, thx for answering :)

  • I really disliked the pianist's comping and solo, kind of ruined the experience for me.

  • It comes from the word "accompany."

  • Great musician, always to be remembered

One of my main inspirations to play my alto, i want a tennor sax now!

  • I agree with jfvlute87. Michael took jazz and music further and elaborated on his influences to take it even further.

  • Michael was "Trane" of this generation. He took what the amazing Coltrane did and expanded on it to the next level.

  • Wow, it's amazing how much of Trane's influence you can hear coming out in Michael but at the same time, he definitely has his own sound and style that just make my draw drop. We will truly miss you Michael, you were taken away from us too soon!

  • fantastic,his sound,blue notes everything perfect.

  • this a great moment, THE MAN Michael, paying tribute to his mentor the GREAT MAN John Coltrane, we all thank you for sharing this great video.

  • thank you for the video!

We lost the best musician and person ever lived!

  • I can not stop my tears flowing.

We shall never forget you, Michael.

    Thank you...

  • Bella Balada, fuiste un gran saxofonista Brecker Q.E.P.D
