Judging by range and fingerings, I'm guessing that this instrument was pitched a half-step above the Euphonium. I have not found any other information on this instrument past this video, so any clarification would be appreciated.
Melephones aren't that much different in sound but the french horn still sounds more "natural" to me. The fingerings are almost the same, and if you started out playing trumpet before you tried horn, you'll see how easy it is to trade off between instruments.
@zackolot I thought the melophone was the marching version of the french horn, correct? lol....maybe? Although People have actually had marching french horns in Christmas marching bands, I men you get the Christmas feel more with the look of the horn as compared to the professional bands with the 'better engineered' horn anyways.....
@randyseck Yeah, Mellophones are the marching version, in the key of F. There are marching Bb horns...but they suck. haha. It's impossible to play well.
@ErinBoBaron123 ...And there are horns in both Bb & F (Which I play) and they aren't hard to march with or play. ^^; heh I don't see why one in just Bb would be hard to play...You play a mellophone, I take it? What's it like? I've always wanted to be able to play one just to see what it's like (Though I know almost for certain I'd like regular french horns more...I prefer their sound, etc)
@13kalahari13 I do play mellophone, and I love it. Very similar to trumpet, but with more of a horn sound, and a deeper mouthpiece. I think the main reason I don't like Bb marching horn is because I'm not the strongest at double french horn in symphonic (I'm technically a clarinet player; Bb horn -> Mellophone was my first brass instrument). The tone of a mellophone is brighter than that of horn, so yes if you like the sound of horn you probably wouldn't like mello. But they are extremely fun :)
@ErinBoBaron123 Ah (: I'm pretty sure I played one once at a football game at school or something but if I remember correctly I failed because of the different fingerings and such xD
@TrumpetGirl555 There IS techniquely a Subcontrabass Tuba, but there's never been a definitive model for it (at least three different ones exsist, each one is built in a different configuration).
Our teacher told us never to call it french horn in high school cuz its really only called horn since i think it didnt come from french i think england?
@DogVideosBySisters In the early 18th century, there were two approaches to the "horn", the French and German. What we know as the "French horn" today was actually a horn in the German style, The French style of horn was closer to a bugle, having less of a bell flare and a less conical bore. In England, one might have to specify which horn was intended.Of course, as Anna Russel used to point out, then there's the English horn which isn't English but French and isn't a horn at all. Go figure.
@DogVideosBySisters The first type of horn was from germany, but the horn has been modified many times, by many different people, in many different places. The horn was originally just used as a hunting call thinger in plays, the french were the first to really start using it as an actual instrument, hence the name french horn.
i would hate to have to dump the spit out of that one its bad enough having to rotate the horn upside down not to mention going and checking the slides think about it:P
is there such thing as a bass french horn? i know theres a piccolor horn a c horn low c horn high c horn low Bb horn high Bb horn single F horn and a A horn
Hahahaha, yeah that was my reaction when my tuba professor told me about it. It is mainly used in Wagner operas. The crazy thing, is my tuba prof use to be a student of Bobo back in the day.
