Thanks for saving the memory for us!! I recall seeing the building as a kid, but never saw what the inside looked like. I have one door and I'm quite sure I have parts of the Broadwater in my building, which dates from 1890. Everything gains spirit with age!
This hotel should have been saved in the same way Bannack has been. I was a little kid and remember this place. Helena tore down so much historical architecture.
this is very good...I was there that day and it was a very sick and solomn feeling....Haunting and sad...knowing ultimately, it was coming down..,I bought two stained glass windows..they were both pretty damaged needed two in order to have them remade into one...still have it after all these years has hung in every house I have owned..From Montana to Oregon and back....I have collected everything I can get my hands on from the OL' Broadwater....love the video thank you!
born and raised in helena, and having been born 14 years after its destruction, i've always felt robbed having not seen it. i still think someone needs to rebuild it.
I feel robbed as well, it was such an amazing and beautiful building....Thank you so much for the great comment, its for people like you that I made the video.
Outstanding! Evocative, lonely, tragic...I remember seeing the Hotel standing as a kid, as a grand outpost before climbing up to McDonald Pass. We did a project on the Hotel when I was in Lincoln School in 6th grade in 1971... Now they have torn down the old school next to the Cathedral, where I went to Bishop Gilmore in grades 1-3...so sad to realize that Helena still seems to not have learned the lessons of time
Such a haunting song. Such a magnificent video. Thank you so much for this posting. I have recently published a novel titled "Sarah Conrad of Eagle Creek" which briefly mentions the Broadwater. In the sequel, "Sarah and Her Friends" which will be published later this year, one of the characters visits the Broadwater and swims in the pool. Montana is such an amazing state, I hope to visit someday and see the places I discuss in my books.
Although the circumstances that lead to the destruction of the hotel cannot be changed, it was the dreams and ideas of Mr. Broadwater, manifested in the hotel and natatorium, which should be preserved in order to hold onto and protect our history.

It is a lesson which all history teaches wise men, to put trust in ideas, and not in circumstances. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
