If the people at the coast don't want it in their "back yard" (and why should they, there's enough water in those areas) then why not just lay an inconspicuous pipe to where the water is needed and desalinate it there? (or somewhere that isn't a picturesque national park)
Maybe a bit more expensive, but if an area is dry enough they'd go for it.
I don't think relying more heavily on rain and river water is a great idea, especially in an already dry ecosystem.
Thank you for your support. I've seen a desal plant in Southern CA for myself. Southern CA is a very dry environment but desal has done nothing to address people's consumption patterns. We are afraid that this will happen here in Oz also.
I think that coastline is coast line. Theres coastline everywhere, i think that there are risks and water prices will rise and all that stuff (im not trying to say that they are not important) but i think that it has to be done now. The only thing that i think i don't know about is what it puts into the ocean. Isn't it just salt? Im thinking of it as a big water purifier. comment me please i would like to discuss is as im talking about in school.
Maybe im ill educated on the issue but i know that we need water.
Im sure you know that Victoria is in a massive drought and to me i think that we have no other choice. Climate change is only going to make it harder to get water and less rain. Also i heard the man talking about its energy use. I read that its energy use is renewable?? thats what i read anyway.
Interesting... Yes, water IS an essential service. However, it's not an infinite resource. The problem is that this precious resource is now in private hands in Victoria & in a dry continent like ours it's not something we should be trying to profit from. The water authorities are now FREAKED about their lack of profit as Melburnians save water. (See The Age Mon 05/01/09). How ironic....
I seen it on the news mate, the Vic state government have been court out here!
Sorry to me water is infinite, rains always come back, one thing is for sure. In the next 5 yrs Victoria state will be hit with major flooding, always happens after a short, medium or long drought. Some of the biggest floods recorded in white history in Australia have been after droughts. And it's all natural:-)
Thanks mate, we in Melbourne know that we actually don't need this water! If the State gov retained water restrictions, rolled out water tanks to us & recycled storm water, we'd be just fine.
Oh good! It's really great to hear that there are people in Melbourne opposing this! It doesn't make sense why we (Victoria) need a Desal plant at all! Technically, we have enough rain fall for all our house hold needs, and there are other options. It just doesn't make sense why Desal is even an option at all!
its not only the whole global warming thing, its the fact thats its being forced on a small comunity who have no say in the matter. It is also planed to run constantly, cost billions and ruin the sea life around the area.
multinational companies want to own water so they can a sell it to us basically, right? and may i add that is a shit place to build a massive desal plant. we dont neeed one ,ever!!
that is correct, a multinational will build the plant (given the chance) & melbourne people will then pay up to 5x the current cost of water - whether we need that water or not...
rofl 1,032 views and only 2 comments thats poor i reko nwe should have it we need more water. but who dont wonthaggi get the WATER Bullshit imo it all goes to melb and the island yeah? rofl at that
Thank you combatwombat for posting this so that everyone can benefit from Bob's words of wisdom. People need to realise that the proposed desal plant is not just a nimby (not in my back yard) issue--but infact impacts on us all.

You people disgust me, attacking everyones freedom to choose.
One thing is for sure, that plant will be built, you local trouble makers will not be forgotten.
There will be price you pay for the troubles you have caused through your local council rates, we know who you are!

Desalination is an ecological and financial disaster. We are fighting it here in Southern California. Kudos to Bob Brown for fighting it down under.

Senator Bob and all of you are simple rube assholes.
Only a jerk would stop a Dealination plant.
Your alternative is LAUGHABLE at best and murderous of yet to be born Aussies.
Why? Becuase you stupid primitives would rely upon the fickleness of Global Climate change.
Rain? Desalination Plants can provide water to even the interior of your backwards ass country. Your crops need never be subject to drought.
Rain? hahhahahahahahaha

I published your comment to demonstrate why we need change here in Australia.
Sadly, most Americans (certainly not all) are energy guzzling, wasteful cretins like you.
The US economy is down the dunny precisely due to greedy, wasteful, short sighted thinking like yours.
We look at the USA mainly to see why we DON'T want the same environmental and economic mess here.
Join the 5% of Americans who hold a passport, get some perspective & learn how to spell.

The first ever Privatisation desalination plant in the world not to be in an industrial Zone.
crackers95 3 years ago 2
You got it - Let's just trash a beautiful coastline! We could use the industrial zones we have to increase our water recyling efforts.

The Victorian Government forcing people to cut back on water usage is illegal.
WATER IS RIGHT (essential service)...NOT A PRIVILEGE!
The state government are covering there ass by building this desal plant.
They new about the water shortage 60/70 yrs ago and did nothing.
There will be more dams build, just a matter of time.
P.S....I'm not taking any notice of the water restrictions.

If a new dam is to be built, they are going to have to do some truly draconian stuff to do it.
Where would the dam go? Where would you put a dam?

put it in your own backyard Melbourne
3aw77 3 years ago 2
well, it really is in our backyard and that's tragedy too. How could we sanction wrecking such a beautiful place?

Thankyou for posting this awesome video!
Desal is a stupid, un-needed option taken on by lazy polititians who don't care about a community who will not vote for them no matter what they do.
Desal sucks! Melbourne, put it in your own backyard!
