  • @karebear0410 There was a play which may have been recorded onto film abt Liliuokalani. HOwever, Hollywood isn't new to controversy, as the recent AVATAR flick is an example of how the Vatican was up in arms abt it. A lot has to do w/ artistic marketability, something Hollywood depends on. As for the past being changed, this isnt' abt that, which I'm sure you're intelligent enough to realize. It's abt the facts being twisted & the continued misinterpretation of Kanaka Oiwi.

  • @karebear0410 No, actually it wasn't the missionaries rather it was all the visitors that spread diseases. If it wasn't from Capt. Cook's time, it was definitely increased between 1787 - 1790 when there was an increasing number of English, American, French, Spanish & Portuguese ships visiting & actively traded w/ the people. Capt. Cook named the isles after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

  • @karebear0410 As long as hawaiians lie, omit and ignore the facts, they will never succeed because people know they are lying and spinning it and don't take them seriously. They want to, maybe love to, play the VICTIM. But, on every document, record and diary of that time screams of the many details and facts hawaiians omit.

  • @curatrix2008 Who has lied? Curatrix, you've been frequenting all of these channels simply to confuse people unfounded facts. Then when I clarify the truth behind your half-truths, you don't reply & you go elsewhere to continue that same argument. Man up, respond & if you can't, just say that you can't. Not like I'd hold this against you. This isn't about me being better or smarter than you, not at all! I'd rather people hear facts & let them decide rather than you twsiting the truth.

  • Hawaiians completely omit that Queen Liliuokalani relinquished her throne to "the superior military forces of the United States". They make excuses that they had her isolated in her palace and demanded it. But, isn't that the test of a true leader, a true Queen to refuse to surrender even to the death. Without her signature, with out her signing away the kingdom of hawaii, they couldn't have kept hawaii.

  • @curatrix2008 CURATRIX, NO ONE ever denied that the Queen temporarily yielded her executive power to the US, and NOT the PROVISIONAL GOVT. YOu're twisting it & don't think I can't see that b/c you're not telling people that she also said: ...yield my authority until such time as the Govt of the US shall, upon the facts being presented to it, UNDO THE ACTIONS OF ITS REPRESENTATIVE & REINSTATE ME & THE AUTHORITY WHICH I CLAIM AS THE CONSTITUTIONAL SOVEREIGN OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

  • @curatrix2008 So March 1893, Pres. Cleveland accepted the Queen's assignment & ordered an investigation & appointed James Blount to investigate the actions of Minister Stevens. Congress was notified of the investigation, & it was concluded Dec. 18, 1893 by presidential msg, & he ordered that the Queen be reinstated. But someone temporarily yielding power also isn't, as defined by int'l law plus US Const., how a territory is acquired. U already knew that, ur trying to confuse people.

  • @karebear0410 I have heard hawaiians state that they will not listen to what haoles have to say about these events. CASE CLOSED. The problem with that blind closed minded approach is that there ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERYTHING. You do not have to agree. But, until both sides hear and understand each other, nothing will get resolved.

  • @curatrix2008 You heard wrong if you heard that they won't listen to Haoles saying stuff, but then again, what exactly are these haoles saying? If your'e talking abt Ken Conklin, you obviously don't know much. There's more than 2 sides to everything, but the FACTS are the FACTS & as you're desperately trying, to give only half truths, can't quote full quotes or cite any sources, all in an attempt to gather a following on youtube.

  • @mamoahina . . . hahahaha well so far you've not stated any facts or given any sources. You do seem adroit at making personal insults. Maybe that's your forte and you should perfect it.

  • @curatrix2008 alot of what shes saying is fuking true to tthe t of history of us hawaiians go read a book you stupid bitch its in there i have read it us hawaiians dont need to justify ourselves to no haole on our land fuk all you guys we go beef

  • Is this Soli Niheu speaking in this video?

  • 'EO

  • This aboriginal Hawaiian/kanaka maoli has said a lot of valuable things....especially the part where our Hawaiian history is disregarded, etc......aloha.

  • Santa has a brother?

  • His name is Uncle Soli Niheu... i am a friend of his daughter. How dare you say something like that! He is a well respected Hawaiian Activist in Hawai'i and a good man.

Now, back to the main topic...

This controversy about the film is sad. I understand the reasons for people speaking out about the title change. But it is necissary. I saw the film and it was in no way, shaming the Princess. It was done accuately and and tastefully.

    E ho'omau i ka lahui Hawai'i...

  • @ Lele :

thanks for sticking up for my uncle and ur friends with kala' i or Kalama?

  • @OneHawaiianHaoleChic I'm friends with Kauila:) And anytime, titah

  • Why are japanese people protesting. They are not hawaiian. Just cause you are born is hawaii doesn't mean you have hawaiian blood.

  • America breached the law of nations.

Hawaii was a recognized neutral nonviolent nation with treatys with many countrys world wide.

Spanish-American war caused cuz spaiin was trying to defend Hawaii when overthrow and annexation happened.

  • about the spanish-american war- thatʻs not true at all. spain didnʻt give a rip about hawaiʻi...it was about cuba and the philippines. the u.s. wanted hawaiʻi because it was a strategic military point- one that aided their expansionist efforts in the asia as well as the americas.

  • lol....mmhmmm?

hawaiian government at the time also had treatys with germany, and japan...u didnt know that either i guess?

if u actually believe everything they teach u in skool..im sorry to say this, but u r STUPID!!!

they dont teach us the truth, they feed us lies..and were ignorant to believe them...the true history dies as the elders who dont pass down the stories die...

trust me..i know what im talking about...i did a reasearch paper on this....

  • I agree that you shouldnt believe everything you hear. I think you might also be implying that academia has a tendency to delegitimize or simply omit the histories and knowledge of native people. I agree with that too. With that in mind, Ive tried to question academias western-based heritage and to employ both western and native knowledge bases throughout my academic career.

  • That said, I wont simply take the word of an anonymous person who has written a research paper. I find it interesting that you believe that the war was caused by Spains defense of Hawaiis sovereignty when they, along with many other states, quickly recognized the Provisional Government following the 1893 overthrow. The war took place in 1898, 5 years after Spains recognition of Hawaiis new governing entities.

  • Were Hawaii the reason for the war, it wouldnt have begun 5 years later, when Spanish foreign interests were coincidentally at stake. Hmm, what a curious anachronism! If you have legitimate sources to support your claims, it would be very interesting to see them.

Please dont presume to know what I know or what I am about. I am Kanaka Maoli and I have a graduate degree in International Relations.

  • hi,

know about the HEARST newspapers promoting war with Spain.....takes a much deeper history than the one that they(Amerikkkans) put out!...aloha.

  • You might be interested to know that I wrote my masters thesis on current and historical issues of Hawaiian sovereignty. Ive done a lot more work in this field than just one high school research paper. So thanks, but your attempts to enlighten me wont be fruitful.

A final thought- proper spelling works wonders for making your argument seem more credible.

Thanks for being so comically presumptuous, not to mention simply wrong, which is why I had to publicly post. Im done dealing with you.

  • socksworn has good comments to make.... truthful even...it appears that he spells local style........which is fun to do sometimes.....suggest you be open to those who have not yet completed their college education too....because even teachers can learn from their students!... aloha.

  • If they decided to go back to the name Barbarian Princess because it is historically correct since this is what the media of the time called her, they should keep the whole thing historically correct. Just seems as if being selective for self interest.

The name was picked as they said, to reach a broader audience, and even though they said they didn't intentionally mean disrespect, I don't feel they went out of the way to make sure they weren't disrespecting Ka'iulani.

  • okay im native hawaiian and i personally think that the movie is going to be great i love Q'orianka kilcher and i think she makes the perfect princess! also people should be happy that the hawaiian culture is finally being recognized. They are informing people around the world about our culture and we should be grateful i mean to this day most mainlanders think we live in huts and eat coconuts all day and dance hula so this movie i would say is a plus to our culture

  • @sharkfrenz it's a catch 22...

  • @sharkfrenz Yes, it is a start. For the civil war between the states, there have been over 800 movies made with each one stressing their belief of what happened, what was truths and what was lies. Sorta sad that hawaiians put so much energy and time into being negative abou this movie instead of trying to get a movie made reflecting their beliefs.

  • ke kupuna is right a movie about ka'iulani needs to have more historical accuracy about the overthrow, look like get mo stuff about her love life, but hey we see

  • Aloha, I know that I'm probably late on the topic but I just learned of this movie today. I also heard the cries of the Hawaiian people, my people, concerning the untruths about this movie production. What happened in the script that is wrong? Please let me know as the LAST thing that I would want is to support something that is not historically accurate to true Hawaiian fact.

    Aloha Malama Pono!

  • When is the movie comming out?

  • No "they" shouldn't. YOU should. If you don't like what's going on try being creative instead of destructive. Instead of tearing down everyone elses work why don't the Hawaiians just go and film their own movie?

  • Wow! You obviously don't have pride of your history and culture! What ignorance!! What do you think? That America SAVED Hawaii (WWII)?! I'm not Hawaiian, but I understand love and sacredness of history, and especially of someone who fought for freedom of their homeland.

So if I were to say to you.. "If it weren't for the BRITISH, america would not have made it..." And then have a not-so-accurate movie made of George Washington for our entertainment... tell me how you feel about that!

  • i was going to reply to jazzy about that issue, that regurgitated of how if it weren't for America....but I think I have already in the past. This guy is obviously the typical slave minded person who can't seek out the truth on their own, rather repeat the same old recycled nonesense.

  • jazzy, it's not a matter of questioning why Hawns just film their own movie, of which they have but not w/ Kaiulani. But what is like a disease is how Hollywood, in its typical Whitefandom zeal seem to grab a story that is not of their culture and romanticize it, use characters who are more well known in order to profit from it. In the meantime, the characters never really showcase a true Hawn. story but show how still POC are depicted as the reason for white people's downfall.

  • they should do a movie on how america took over hawaii, through the eyes of a hawaiian family living in those times..

  • @jondellos i would watch that, break all those stupid steriotypes about hawaii

  • @jondellos I agree they should do a movie on how america took over hawaii through the eyes of a hawaiian family living in those times. I also think they should tell the brutal honest truth of what those arriving here found, baby women being thrown live into volcanos, rampant incest, kings killing entire families if one made a mistake, constant violence, the absolute right of men to capture and rape whatever moved, no individual rights to land, property or your own ideas.

  • @curatrix2008 They never threw people into the volcanoes. Ka lua o Pele was a sacred place. I think you're being delusional based on what the media fabricated. If you read all of the missionary & captains journals, they don't mention that for a good reason. That's b/c they never existed. I know I've been pretty blazé about your remarks but only b/c I know your game CURATRIX. You can't reply civily to me so you reply to other people, a classic case of a troll.

  • @curatrix2008 You don't have to like kanakas based on your own personal experience, but if you think you can persuade people here w/ lies, it only makes you look bad. Why on earth would you want to do that?

  • Hello! This isn't history! It's a movie. Something's wrong with you if get all your history from the movies! And American's aren't killing our Hawaiian culture. If it weren't for America we Hawaiians may not have made it through World War II! Every nation wanted to take over Hawai'i and the islands could have fallen to Japan or Russia. Our culture is dying becuase people are trying to preserve it so much. Culture is a iving thing; it has to run free; it has to live, grow, and change.

  • i agree in a way. we shouldnt be worried about this there informing americans about the hawaiian culture. But they did kill our culture our population went down more then 70% so they did screw it up and they forced there self empowering religion on us. but i have to say i would rather get taken over by america then any other country

  • Great statements from Soli Niheu!

  • Yeah mailehao, why can't Hawaiians be like the Chinese Communist Party and censor anything produced in their state?????

  • Or better yet woodenskiff why can't be like Americans and destroy a people, culture, and language of a nation and then decide to rewrite their history for them???

    smart ass

  • Im tired of everyone profiting off of the Hawaiian culture, and people...

  • Hey i agree but thats what our state lives off of. we depend on tourist. more then half of our state money is from them :[

  • wooden...Hawaiians are occupied by the US and the US has changed things a lot, so we have no control over a lot of things like immigration. Look at the flood of immigratns who, now I've heard, some are passing themselves as Kanaka Oiwi in order to get even more benefits. Thanks to the US, we now have so many invasive species like the coqui, miconia, parrots, and soon snakes if we're not careful.

  • why cant we hawaiians be like the maori people and anything that anyone does and says about our culture need to go through us first????

  • Shame on the Friends of 'Iolani Palace and the Department of Land and Natural Resources for allowing this without seeing the script first. Shame on OHA for not doing more since they are also responsible to help preserving Hawaiian culture and history.

  • e o!

  • Excellent Speaking Truth , why continue with the LIES !and use OUR PALACE TO DO IT !!

    HEWA ...

    Mahalo for this Video

    Pono

  • i Disagree i am hawaiian and while making the movie the director only had good intention for the movie. And what is the movie lying about? Hes informing america of our culture and letting them know our histroy. most mainlanders think we still live in huts and eat coconuts! i mean sure there might be some inaccurate stuff but it, could be way worse ive seen movies and shows that slaughtered our culture with tottaly lies but this movie is informing people about our amazing princess
