"It's the name of my father, and his father before me." Donnie smirks and laughs. Reason, becuase Donnie has done the same tasks time and time before with a diffrent Frank in a diffrent dimmention. The whole point of Donnie's task to eliminate and vandal property was to bring balance to the 4th dimmention. The reason he let Gretchen and himself die at the end was because he knew, the only way things would "balance" if he died. His purpose was to live is sadness, dispar and lonleyness.

Director/Writter Richard Kelly wanted to make the movie longer and include Frank in more scenes, but do to budget limits, he was't able to fill the enitre movie completely. It mostly boils down to Donnie has been through three or four dimmentions and has seen Frank before. If you remember when Donnie asked Frank at the mutliplex "Why they call you Frank?" Frank replies.. (I'm going to comment in another box.)
