The leg press look really awkward... weird angle for the legs. Maybe he should have his feet closer together? He's awesome though. I'm sure he'll make it big when he's older! (:
he needs to line up those knee joints with his feet so his leg creates a straight line, this would save his joints when he is older, if you watch the vid closely you can see the pressure on the knees, he is doing a great job with his training but please for his sake help him to do it the correct way
You obviously aren't interested in what anyone thinks since you fancy yourself an expert.
Hint: 8-9 years old playing football is just as stupid at that age trying to lift twice their weight and more.
By of course, you won't listen. You fancy yourself an expert. Yeah right.
YES, without doub tyou are a BAD coach because you seem to have little of any concern for the boy's health and and well being. With you, all that matters is winning and records.
FACT: According to American Academy of Pediatrics, that's medical DOCTORS, not some wannabe coach, on average 20,000kids a year just in the United States, suffer inury from weight training serious enough to require an emergency room visit.
@willieofroanoke Powerlifting is safe for a child at any age as long as the child is able to perform the lift with proper form and motor skills. Powerlifting is definitely safer than football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling, and most other activities that children do.
@willieofroanoke Proper form is important to distribute the weight properly on the tendons, ligaments, muscles and skeletal structure . Proper motor skills are gradually practiced as learning to ride a bike. As long as proper form and motor skills are obtained, powerlifting is still much safer than most sports that kids will do. Powerlifting is much safer than football as the forces incurred while being tackled or tackling someone are much greater than any lift a young person can do.
@willieofroanoke A young person has a much greater chance being injured in football as momentum = mass times velocity and a barbell is moving at very slow velocity compared to a person hitting someone on the football field.
Yeah you are a bad coach because it seems for you it is all about records. Kids his age shouldn't even be doing squats or dead lifts. Watching him do left press is painful. Just look at the angle his legs keep slipping to. That's a recipe for knee damage or a stress fracture.
@willieofroanoke Point of fact: He has NEVER had an injury related to weight lifting. So your guessing what will happen, hasn't. Anyone can speculate, but I look at the bottom line. He is injury free and has accomplished what he set out to do. I'd say that is success. Whether YOU like the way he lifts or the way I coach, is irrelevant. .
You're just a moron. I've been lifting for over 20 years Bubba. What you forcing that kid to do is criminal. Rock's form sucks. A real coach would spot that immediately. Sooner or later he's going to hurt himself and if you really are his coach, your fault. What are YOUR qualifications? You seem clueless.
@willieofroanoke His form is so bad that he wins every AAU Powerlifting contest he's entered. His form is so bad, he has 12 World Records in Squat , Deadlift and Bench. I'll post his next vid Feb. 6th, the day of his next contest. BTW, he just broke 2 more WR in Laughlin, NV Dec. 6th in the World Finals. I guess I'm a bad coach... I'm cool, just don't dis the kid. He works hard. Besides football this is his favorite sport.
@GANGSTAELPASO This isn't the NFL or high school football. This is YOUTH FOOTBALL! Your number doesn't indicate your position. If you look at the pictures, you'll notice HE'S a LINEMAN!
@willieofroanoke What the fuck is wrong with your moron parents for allowing your illogical comments on a 9 yr old's web page? Look "doctor" the kid is in great shape. He goes to his family doctor twice a year.. He is perfectly fine. Thanks for your pseudo concern.
just wondering how would a wall squat transition into a full barbell squat? you dont have use any balance to do wall squats. granted you get a good burn and it is completely different than doing a regular squat. but this kid should have been taught proper dowm and slowly went heavy because he is obviously going to stop progressing as he keeps older because he was taught the worst form on just about everything. maybe should have just stuck to weightlifting and not powerlifting for awhile
good way to fuse his growth plates shut, and stunt his growth. he should wait till his a least 16-17 before doing anything that puts to much strain on his bones.
Just like with every athlete, if an exercise is performed incorrectly injuries will eventually happen. In my opinion, as a strength and conditioning coach for a professional rugby league team in Australia, this kid has poor technique as far as I can see in this video. It wouldn't hurt him to narrow his feet and get his knees tracking over his feet more.
Good work coach. Looks like you've built a strong kid. For all those that think weight training stunts growth, may I point out that activities such as running/jumping create forces of approximately 6-8 times one's body weight. There are several professional athletes that began weight lifting in their early teens and have still outgrown there own parents and are over 6' tall, not too mention the endless list of supporting scientific evidence that supports young athletes doing weight training.
In the end youre his coach and father so whether you consider my advice or not is up to you. But it gos without saying that any injuries that this kid suffers while under your control is your responsibility. Even world record holders can get into habits of bad form, I have found this countless times with the professional athletes that i work with everyday.
Lifting weights correctly & w/ proper form is beneficial to most young athletes. It may lead to increased bone density, tendon/ligament &obviously muscle development. Weight training by a 9 yrold is not bad in itself as long as parents& coaches recognize risks for injuries, pay attention to pain/discomfort, never have them work thru an injury w/out trainer-doctor evaluation & prevention of overuse injuries. how young is too young, how much training is excessive? not sure, every kid is diiferent.
there is evidence that lifting weights stunts growth. it may be exagerated by some but overstress has been shown to cause irregular or stunted bone growth if not treated. Extreme working out in many spots like gymnastics, lifting weights or manual labor in extreme may damage the growth plates in the long bones of preteens and teens. 30% of all breaks in children happen in this region at either side of the bones. this is one reason why children are not allowed to perform many jobs..
First off, where is this "evidence". You are speaking of "overstress". His weight training has nothing to do with "overstress". "Extreme working out or extreme working conditions". The young man has no "extreme workouts nor is he doing "extreme manual labor". These do not apply to him As for that last part, my father and grandfather worked "extreme hours doing manual labor in Mississippi picking cotton and plowing fields. Their heights were 6'1 respectively.
dont get me wrong, this kid is very strong for a 9 year old, but weight lifting is all about proper form. especially when youre lifting that young. if this kid keeps lifting like this, hes going to get hurt eventually. his leg presses were maybe going down half way and that was only 270 lbs. and you say he can leg press 400 lbs??? i call bull shit. and his squat form is terrible as well. if you are a real "coach" you would correct these things immediately
I'm sure his lifting form is a quantum leap above your writing form. As for the 270lbs on the leg press, have you ever noticed the 145lb rack that the weights sit on? Add that with the weights and you'll see it is over 400lbs. The squat was done to my specifications. He can bring that same weight to the floor. He is the AAU world record holder in his age and weight group. How about you?
145 lbs my ass. have your ever just pushed on the platform when there is no weight on it? i could push it with my finger. if your going to add the rack, you can maybe add 5 lbs, cause thats all it weighs. and that still doesnt dicount his form. i can leg press over 900 lbs. and i bring my legs to my chest.
i wonder how much i could do if i went down partialy like he does?
You sound like a classic bitterman. Upset that this kid that you don't know, can out lift you pound for pound. The rack IS 145lbs. I have the specs from the machine. Why don't you do some research, then your words won't sound like a misguided rant.
im not going to be a "bitterman" about this kid, but the form really should be corrected, and if you cant do them right, just take off weight. Its better to do them light then do them wrong. to tell the truth i would be more impressed to see a kid like that do lighter weight with the correct form. If the form is wrong then numbers dont count for shit......
well said. I think this egomaniac for a coach needs to listen. When you keep lifting weight like this with that form, the residual effects down the road are going to be very detrimental to your health.
tweedt72 your just a hater. the rack at my gym weighs 120 so that rack could easily weigh 145. how was your form at 9 years old? and as for your 900 pound press, lets see the video otherwise shut up. the kids a proven record holder and your a nobody so what can you really have to say. good job little buddy keep it up.
bigrodney, i do not necessary think tweed is a hater. I hope he is cocerned about the health of a child only. I agree with you that the weight is pretty close to 400 lbs based on my experience with similar machines. my form was not good at 9 but would hope a knowlegable person would correct it if i were workin out back then. thats why 9 yr olds should never lift weights alone.
I have 2 agree with tweed about the leg press form. I think he lifted the weight u said but it is not equivalent to 400 lbs due to leverage advantage of short legs ,design of machine slides in a fixed motion & not full range of motion of free weights. It IS much more safe for young lifters if done properly. he did not go down far enough to get the most out of the excersise. I was taught not to lock out leg completely when working out sice bad for knees & to go down to knees almost in chest.
dont matter what they found in the journals lol doesnt mean its 100% true. look at it objectively and see what happens when you lift and then combine that with a child OBVIOUSLY it isnt the best thing for him, you'll fuck his hormones up and fuck up his sex life when he wants to have sex, way to go pops!

Youth Sports Injury FactsEach year more than 3.5 million children in the United States under age 15 are treated for sports injuries.
The following percentages of athletes ages 5 to 14 have been injured playing their respective sports:
-- 28% of football players
-- 25% of baseball players
-- 22% of soccer players
-- 15% of basketball players
-- 12% of softball players
