  • always the best!!!!!!!

  • James Gadson looks like he is on an entirely different plane. He is the groove. Dude's cooler than 3 Plutos.

  • not a single fuck was given during this performance...

  • Oh yes! The great James Gadson playing his legendary 16th note hi-hat.

I think JG and Jeff Porcaro have played the most tasty stuff that way. Try playing along to " I keep forgettin' from Michael Mcdonald's 1982 album " If that's what it takes. Not only is it a very beautiful song, but also incredibly groovy and very hard to play along to. You should try it.

  • that drummer is the best....so much soul

  • funny i play guittar and drums but this is very awesome

  • Why is the Drummer taking so much feel?

  • I love being black

  • @sda1225 me too

  • Best of the Best....Makes me hate C rap noise even more.

  • what a voice !!!!!

  • Arrrrrgh awesome video-Bill is one of the most subversively funky people around with a beautiful voice too. Thanks for posting.

  • Any one have an idea how I can get the (guitar) tablature to this song? I've looked everywhere.

  • ..Awesome..

  • 1 person ain't got the soul

  • amazingly hot & cool at the same time* thank you i needed that*

  • that was amazing. what in the HELL happened to music?

  • @unclefreddie70 Aloe Blacc. <---music.

  • Wow now that is some jamming.

  • Another reason why I miss the 70's. What today on Pop radio has the deep groove like this? You just can't get groove out of a sequencer.

  • Wow they are playing such a great funk and groove and they are all so acting supercool. This is Rare TY TY TY

  • Except for Bill Withers and the drummer Mr. JG, looks like a bunch of guys kickin back and chillin on the front porch playing some funky chords. Very nice indeed.

  • I played this on my 8 track in my Buick 6

  • DRUMMER IS A TIME PIECE!!!!! GROOOOOVe

  • pocket groovy S!@#! NICE!

  • Yes!!!Pocket!!!!

  • This is a funky jam!

  • Great! Thanks for posting.

  • I love the cloths love the groove love it oh baby

  • what are the chords to this song?

  • @uglycat It is just your typical I-IV-V chords...not sure the key.

  • @jahjeremy oh no. sorry. not too fluent in music speak. i don't know what you mean by "I-IV-V". =-/

  • @uglycat

    I = Eb

    IV = Ab

    V = Bb

    starts on Eb vamp

    first part w/ lyrics

Eb dominant - Ab dominant - Eb dominant

    turnaround

Bb dominant - Ab dominant repeating

    another vamp/jam in Eb

  • @jahjeremy thank you!

  • What a groove.

  • @leahingmovietime ,check out alisons kitchen doing ain't no sunshine and knock yourself out and tell all

  • It's a shutout. Nobody dares cross Bill Withers. Thanks so much for this upload. This is linked on my FB page. How the studio version of this cut isn't on the Best of Bill Withers on Legacy is a travesty. Yet another reason for the death of the CD medium.

  • Funk soul!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!

  • One of my top fav songs from Bill Withers (ColdBlood with Lydia Pense made also a good version) ... Still Bill ...

  • Thanks for uploading this, it's killer. Gets the juices flowin.

  • Bill hit #31 in Billboard, 3-17-73. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Amazing how this comes together right out of nothing..........

  • This is -- THE SHIT !!!

  • Does anyone know the model of vocal mic he is using?

  • i dream of playing this tight with other musicians, this is incredible

  • This should be required viewing & listening for all students of music! Especially all the young cats that think overplaying is where it's at. THIS IS WHERE IT'S AT......PERIOD!

The way it was done back in the day!

  • WOW.

  • Jimminy Crickets, that is BAD ASS! Do you know where this originally aired, and if it's available anywhere?

  • I think this band consists of: * Bill Withers - guitar, vocals * Benorce Blackmon - guitar * Melvin Dunlap - bass * James Gadson - drums * Raymond Jackson - piano

I think these guys are from the Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band

I looked this up a while back and never got around to adding it in the description.

Thanks for the reminder. A very "cool" band.

  • @bluzman2 Thanks for the great clip. This band was with Dyke &The Blazers and Charles Wright & The Watts Band.Al Mcay was the original guitar player( joined Earth Wind And Fire) .Replaced by Bernorce Blackman.

  • @bluzman2 James Gadson, what a badass

  • @leahkingmovietime Yeah gotta love the drummer. He's keeping it pretty simple and super funky.

  • @bluzman2 GREAT VIDEO! Thanks for posting, never seen this.

  • Yea man, who is that guitar player?

  • The hip-hop world owes a lot to Mr. Gadson!

  • Funky, funky, funky. James Gadson took this basic 16th note beat to another level.

Cudos James Gadson! Read more about James Gadson and other funky drummers on SoulDrummers . com.

  • @fnkdrmmr RIght on. His playing with Charles Wright is incredible also. Dude has incredible sense of rhythm!

  • @fnkdrmmr

Do you have the Charles Wright Live at the Haunted House cd release? Some of the drumming is phenomenal-some tunes have been released on other albums but there's a song, ummm have to check, ah yeah Philly Dog (a markeys tune I think) where Gadson is INSANE. Just looked it up on Rhino, the bit I'm talking about is actually the bit you can listen to on the track listing-don't think youtube allows me to post the link

  • @bootayjam Thank you for the information on the Charles Wright tune. I'll will definitely research it.

  • wow, for real!!!!!
