Oh yes! The great James Gadson playing his legendary 16th note hi-hat.
I think JG and Jeff Porcaro have played the most tasty stuff that way. Try playing along to " I keep forgettin' from Michael Mcdonald's 1982 album " If that's what it takes. Not only is it a very beautiful song, but also incredibly groovy and very hard to play along to. You should try it.
Except for Bill Withers and the drummer Mr. JG, looks like a bunch of guys kickin back and chillin on the front porch playing some funky chords. Very nice indeed.
It's a shutout. Nobody dares cross Bill Withers. Thanks so much for this upload. This is linked on my FB page. How the studio version of this cut isn't on the Best of Bill Withers on Legacy is a travesty. Yet another reason for the death of the CD medium.
This should be required viewing & listening for all students of music! Especially all the young cats that think overplaying is where it's at. THIS IS WHERE IT'S AT......PERIOD!
I think this band consists of: * Bill Withers - guitar, vocals * Benorce Blackmon - guitar * Melvin Dunlap - bass * James Gadson - drums * Raymond Jackson - piano
I think these guys are from the Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band
I looked this up a while back and never got around to adding it in the description.
@bluzman2 Thanks for the great clip. This band was with Dyke &The Blazers and Charles Wright & The Watts Band.Al Mcay was the original guitar player( joined Earth Wind And Fire) .Replaced by Bernorce Blackman.
Do you have the Charles Wright Live at the Haunted House cd release? Some of the drumming is phenomenal-some tunes have been released on other albums but there's a song, ummm have to check, ah yeah Philly Dog (a markeys tune I think) where Gadson is INSANE. Just looked it up on Rhino, the bit I'm talking about is actually the bit you can listen to on the track listing-don't think youtube allows me to post the link
always the best!!!!!!!

Another reason why I miss the 70's. What today on Pop radio has the deep groove like this? You just can't get groove out of a sequencer.
