I was about to say the same thing, when I saw your rebuttal.

Even classical music enthusiasts sometimes forget that Porgy and Bess was an opera. Summertime was not a pop tune. It was not a show tune, It was an bona fide, honest to god opera aria!

George and Ira Gershwin were indeed Tin Pan Alley song writers, but Summertime was definitely not a pop tune.
