I know I'm a late bloomer on this post. But I think for like 2 years they used the exact same engine as the VW, and I mean the exact same, they later went on to make it their own. Not positive but that's what I think.
This is so funny! I had a '73 mach 1 in high school in '86, and my friend's omni glht raced me next to Superdawg on Devon. First time, he had a passenger and started in like second gear, and I beat him. Second time, in a fair, dead start race, he BLEW MY DOORS OFF! I have, sine then, gone through about 5 GLH turbo's, one 2.5 shadow turbo auto (SICK FAST), a galant vr4, EVO (TOO fst), baja turbo, supercharged mach 1 focus (custom, of course), and now have a crazy fast chevy aveo. TURBOLUV!
I have a lot of respect for fast ugly cars and have always been fond of the Omni GLHS. Getting your ass beat by a Dodge Omni/Neon/Caravan/VW Bug/Mazda 323GTX/Mazda Rotary Truck/Buick Regal T-Type/Mitsubishi Galant vr4 etc is an experience everyone remembers.
the omni/horizon and the 2.2/2.5 are the reason chrysler still exists, and are far, far from the worst cars ever made. they were cheap to buy fuel and maintain, and na the engines dont die. ever. the omni was one of, if not the first, true american subcompact cars. pure transportation. you can call them ugly all you want, but they are actually an extremely important car in american automotive history, even though they receive no love from most people.

Badass video though I would like to point out one minor detail. The Omni is a first generation VW Golf. Chrysler just bought the rights and molds and started producing. But once they started tweaking them, then they got badass.
That´s wrong: The Dodge Omni is a french SIMCA (later Talbot) Horizon... Chrysler was the owner oft taht french company in the seventies, before selling it to Peugeot in the early eighties.
@richjd630 the chrysler 2.2, and 2.5 are bullet proof. they were made in trinton engine facility, just like the industructable slant 6. change your oil once in awhile (not once all of its gone running it till she squeeks) and they run FOREVER. we now own 3 daytonas. 87 shelby(2.2), 88 shelby daytonas(2.2), 86 turboz(2.2). before that, 85 lazer xt turbo, shadow es, turbo turbo charger. we've had the base model 2.5 and 2.2 as well, we know REAL turbo dodge(NOT 2.6, NOT 3.0) and they r incredible
@richjd630 I've beaten 5.0's stock. Then I rebuilt the engine and upped the boost to 16.0-20psi. That was one fun little car. After the rebuild I've beaten Monte Carlo SS's with nice engines. They could run me down in the quarter on the strip but cutting lights I smoked 'em by trains.

I owned an 86 GKH and eventually blew the turbo. I loved that car though. You never see them any more and I feel really guilty for not taking better care of mine.
lol.. to answer some of the suggestions that have been made in here- the bottom end and turbo were the stock garrett t3. the car reliably went 13.3@106 with 2.3 second 60"s. never ran it on slicks but it was an easy mid/high 12 sec car with traction. this video was shot on bfg drag radials. and i definately didnt have anywhere near $7k into the car.. id say i had about 1500$ total in it, including the cost of the car itself lol
there were some dodges back then that had a weird 2.6 liter mitsu motor but none of them came turbo. the dsm cars.. lasers and talons, and the dodge stealth were turbo dodges but all mitsu. the 80's cars are an entirely different setup. anyway, look at my other videos for more about the car and a lot more racing.

thats wrong. the first gen omnis had a 1.9 4 cyl that was mostly volkswagon. in 82 thay changed to the 2.2, which was 100% chrysler and was put into damn near everything they mad until the mid 90's

well your guarantee is about as good as an audi because dodge used an AIReseach garret t3 turbos untill 1988 when they went to a new 2piece intake and the mitsu because it was smaller and spooled quicker, something that the critics didnt like about the car, and seeing you drive that crap from the other side of the world, let me put it in laymans terms...turbo lag so please it looks like U need to do some research

ok, you can think what u want about audi. at least audi doesnt lay off hundreds of thousands of workers, like dodge, chevy, and ford have. and my audi will easily take BOTH of these cars. stage 3 s4. twin gt35r turbos. 460awhp on pump gas. daily driver, never let me sit. oh, and u just proved me right anyway, i never said anything about the fucking years of the turbos douche, i was simply stating that mitsu had a turbo in a dodge. so i was right!!!!!!

tell ya what bro, if u wanna come to manheim, pa. thats the town i live in. i will show u who is the pussy, and to give u a little hint, it wont be me. also, my car does 460awhp on pump gas. around 575 on race. never dynoed on race fuel. it is a feat to get big power from a small engine. my car is a 2.7L whats yours?? imo, its not too much of a feat getting big power from a big engine. lets see whos motor lasts longer. ive embarrased a lot of v8s, and a few v10s

thats wrong. the first gen omnis had a 1.9 4 cyl that was mostly volkswagon. in 82 thay changed to the 2.2, which was 100% chrysler and was put into damn near everything they mad until the mid 90's

Well, we all know where all the "ford sucks, dodge rules" is. I got a mid 80's Stang, I'd still love a Dodge Ram, and an Omni. There are 25 year old Mustangs smoking new Vipers. Any car can, in theory, smoke any other car. It takes money and knowledge, or just lots of money. And, there have been Fords smoking Dodge's throughout the entire lifespan of the two manufacturers (sp?). And vice versa. They are BOTH good companies, ACCEPT IT, and stop shit talking.
