  • The bass that has killed gods

  • I love the Starnglers . I love their nervegassing romantic music. And i hate feminists too.

  • Great vid, love it - Thanks for posting.

  • The band must have been really hyped up because they played this tune at almost double speed

  • Old enough to have grown up on this...timeless, fucking AWESOME....but as a borderline old fart I have to complain about the sound quality, the hissing drives me nuts

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again, and so many of you seem to agree: FUCKING GREAT! This song, this performance are brilliant and classic. My other favorite Stranglers song: No More Heroes. The recorded performances of these are virtuoso.

  • The Booby is a massive fan x

  • Keyboards !!

  • it's about finding the right people (no matter what age) to make good songs sound magical. and then......egos and class A's get in the way . sad eh

  • 3 people have got a Crakerjack pencil up their arse!

  • simply brilliant.

  • THESE guys inspire me so bad so bloody bad if they ever were to make a bio movie i want to play JJ or dave..

    fucking best band period

  • LOL! I love the ending XD

  • with this peedeier version watch dave on the keys, beast

  • beat that!!

  • SEXY JJ!.

  • wow goosebumps

  • This was 78 not 79

  • fuck me you numpties look at the bassman

  • WIN

  • Just saw Hugh play this the other night (check my page for the vid). He's still great. Yeah, it's a different version now, but for cryin' out loud its 30 years later! He stretches out on the guitar a bit. Some tasty noodling. Which he would have the keyboards though - they add so much.

  • This was like a breath of fresh air in the 70,s having to listen to prog and glam rock in the early days

  • Saw Hugh perform this in Edinburgh recently with no keyboards, wondered how he'd pull it off but he did it and it was damn fine. Dunno about the eltist audiance though.. after all, if you don't want to play to them.. don't play the gig.

  • @Gaudd Not to mention, Hugh Cornwall studied in college to become a teacher before turning to music.

  • I bet they played this one super-fast because they wanted their set to be over with as quickly as possible. How Dave managed to keep up the pace on the keys here is unbelievable! Great to watch.

  • slow down Hugh.

  • I love the stranglers! And I hate elitist shits, too!

  • It is a b it fast when you're used to the studio version from Rattus......I don't think it helps...sounds like the Dickies might have played it tbh.

  • TOO FAST this is how it should be played not the slowed down crap that sells records.RAW FAST PUNK that is the real Stranglers

  • Back in the day my band supported the Stranglers a couple of times (Ipswich and Dunstable). Being a bass player it was an honour to get as close to JJ as I did (stage invasion!) and despite their 'tough' image they were bloody good blokes, very friendly and helpful to a struggling support

  • Punk is dead LONG LIVE PUNK

  • Guilford university never represented Guilford, we hate playing to elitest audiences, so fuck off!

  • Fuck Sid....This is a Stranglers upload..long live the men in black!!! Hanging Around!!!!

  • Unfortunately I saw them at an outdoor concert supporting Level 42 and Simple Minds about 5 years ago in the East of Holland. Abysmal! REALLY untight!

  • Comment removed

  • You may call me Mr Cunt!

  • tight to the extreme

  • The real deal! Fuck todays wannabe fake bands!!

  • Where can I get a crackerjack pencil ?

  • They fitted in with the mood of the time. They played at all the venues that the first wave of punk played. I saw many of the bands..I loved punk. But it was a bit elitist, and stuck up. You had to dress a certain way, like certain bands, no keyboards, no long hair, rules, rules. The Stranglers disregarded those rules. I liked them for it. Anyway I like their sound. esp. JJ Burnels's "barracuda" bass

  • Did you see the sex pistols?

  • No I'm afraid not. They split by the time I was able to. I was in my final year at School. '78 So I caught the fag end of punk. I saw The Clash, Banshees, SLF, The Snivelling Shits, Buzzcocks. Unfortunately I never got to see The Stranglers...I had the opportunity to see them in Leeds but I was ill..had the ticket and everything. Dissapointing

  • I've never head of the Sniveing shits. Your lucky I only saw Wet Wet Wet play live and it sucked. Do you like Sisters Of Mercy?

  • The Snivelling Shits one of the lesser known punk bands. Sisters of Mercy were ok...a bit gothic and they liked to wear sunglasses overcoats and hats..even in the Summer heat.

  • Have you heard of Fashion there're a new wave band not a lot people know who there check out there song love shawdow

  • @TheNaomiengland Very funky, slappy bass eighties FASHION. I used to like Propaganda and Scritti Pollitti in The Eighties

  • Wow you've heard of them cool

  • @TheNaomiengland You like Sid Vicious then? I remember at the time thinking he was a bit of a thug. He had the look though

  • Yes I like Sid hes a sex god. Sid was a scapgoat. he wasn't a thug. Sid was a wimp eveyone says so. Nancy used to beat him up. Where were you when you heard the news about his death? I used to like the lead singer of SOM but now he looks like a monster from Hammer horror

  • @TheNaomiengland When Sid died I was 17 a Punk follower and working in a factory which made speaker cabinets for stereo systems...sweeping up sawdust most of the time. I saw the news report on T.V. This time of year...late Winter. He had a couple of posthumous hits around then "C'mon Everybody" and "Something Else"...The Blockheads were hitting it big, and Blondie and The Village People. Also it was a cold winter. I recall walking home from work 10 miles in a blizzard as the buses had stopped

  • I wasn't born when Sid died. It must been sad for punk fans. Ian Dury lived in my home town Luton it says on wikapeida. Wow you walked home in a blizzard i'd been screaming if i had to that. Do you think Sid killed her?

  • Comment removed

  • @TheNaomiengland

sid was a talentless goit, glen matlock deserved the credit that he never got

  • i don't care what you think what you think. I love Sid anyway

  • Ha ha ha, they sure are working class!

    PS

Back in my punk days I never considered Stranglers to be punk rock... And I hated them!

Now I'm a bit older and I love the guys, but I still don't think of them as punk rockers...Must be the Hammond factor I don't know... They're just a great rock and roll band that I discovered too late...

  • The drummer usually controls the time/tempo etc

  • the stranglers live always pick up the temp dont they the drummers must swear coz it gets faster and faster

  • I keep coming back... this is where its at.

  • Hey Sean, we're back where we started. I'm still holding a Dollar bill .Hugh signed for you. He said "Only a Dollar". I said ,it'll be worth a million in Ireland.

  • Really? Thanks a million Zigg!

  • Zigg, I've just read that Hugh is / was 6 foot 3... is this correct? If so, two things: one, you must be a bit of an old viking yourself as you're standing head to head, and secondly, that drummer looks one tough son of a gun, the karate expert Mr Brunel, and an obviously athletic Cornwell... this is a band who it seems really could walk the walk if called upon.

  • I found the Rattus norvegicus album when I was a kid staying in a caravan when I was a kid and it blew me away. got me into music. Respect for them all!!

  • I played the whole album, relentlessly, on a caravan-holiday in France when I was ~17.

    Memories :)

  • maneatinsquirrel22 you one heavy dude imagine callin anybody a twonk or even plural a twonker... youve got some twonkers big man :) ya fud .... go on chase ureself ya fanny...

  • This live version was played much faster because the band were very angry that a lot of proper Stranglers fans did not get tickets for the gig. The Stranglers were (and still are) excellent live but when wound up and angry they were unbelievable

  • Someone say 'wanker?'

  • i cant be bothered with this bitching anymore. they are good, full stop. and even though i don't now. i did for 25 years (subutex the savior !) and if you need to see some more vidoes before you decide if you like them , i cant find words to reply to that , you win. OK

  • he is obviously a michael jackson fan... what a fud :)

  • No, can't stand the guy!!

I like the stranglers, as I said in my comment, if you bothered to read it properly, Golden Brown rules! I just need to see some better videos than these on here...

  • stranglers fucking great shows they put on, this sounds shit to what i have heard when i seen them, its too fast for me. . maneatingsquirrel22 you some sort of fucking loner shit stabber who likes putting people down while you sit in the bedroom when everyone else has a life you fucking little shit, what the fuck is wrong with smak heads ? get back to wanking your younger brothers and sisters off you creep, probably a six former into indi. fucking shit hole plumber you are mate . We know . ! !

  • agreed, man eating squirrel is a fucking wanker who simply wasnt there, fucking loser,we know!

  • Wow! talk about a small minded child like person! why do you have to result to needless name calling and pathetic behaviour? were you bullied at school? no, I bet you were the one who went around kicking people and making fun of them, probably to make up for some infieriority complex you have. I'm entitled to my opinion, so just leave off!!!

  • Man your a complete twonk!

You've no idea what sort of person I am because you haven't met me, so stop speculating!! I'm entitled to my opinion, and if people think I'm wrong and can prove it like psychomike99 did with peaches then don't bother leaving your petty minded comments like this.

  • How dare you Sir. The Stranglers are Brilliant.

  • Comment removed

  • wtf u talking about u may not like the stranglers and im cool with that but this not head banging trash man

  • keep eatin squirrels ya numpty... your aff your nutss.... do what squirrels do stick them up your ass... not yer donkey ... DONKEY....

  • Looks like this person with a mind the size of my left toe doesn't get the meaning of my screen name, then again, I guess I shouldn't be too hard on him, looking at his childish comment that he left, he seems to struggle with communicating like an adult, so he results in pointless swearing and name calling. Are you an adult or a 6 year old?

  • Mate, you so should have gone to GuilFest yesterday in Britain, they were amazing, and how can you not like Peaches?

  • (1:30) Dig that high tech light show! Wow man! green blue green blue

  • The punk Deep Purple......yet even better!

  • this is such a dark mean tune! ...wood is achieved when I hear that bass!!!

  • 'wood is achieved' hahahahahaaha me too lol the bass rocks on this tune. All hail to the MIB

  • oh for a fridge full of mutton pies like yours!!! ..mmmmmm!!

  • Wood that make it a "stonking classic" then?

  • .....or a BONAfide Punk smash?!?!

  • its not just the wood off the bass ,but the ripped paper cone in his amp cabinet that jj burnel didn't know about for years until his roady looked inside it once....torn paper is achieved when i hear that marshal!!!

  • Thanx for sharing !!

One,of their best songs+they had so many !!!

  • The Bass in this song is awesome. In fact the whole song is. Bass Bass Bass, its like an earthquake ripping thorugh the floorboards....Love it

  • One of the most baddassed muthufuckin' songs ever.Thank you for sharing this killer video .

  • I second that as well. Well said. To come from this to gimps like bono, chris martin, timberlake etc... tragic

  • Well said mate, add the editors and fferdinand etc

  • Heavy guitar

  • What the FUCK, this turns me fuckin ON, well, im a little (a lot) drunk, but its GREAT.

(You will never know how many times i tried to write this text RIGHT, cause i miss the keys xD)

  • Excellent footage and sound, JJB has a energising sound and does just what I like to hear from a bass player , Barry Adamson is another, but that's another episode. Superb intensity and a unique musical talent.

PS: Don't know what HC expected from comfy, middle class Guildford really, hardly a hotbed of disgruntled youth and insurrection.

  • I loved their keyboards. Like The Doors, I could always identify the band immediately once you heard it.

Around that time it was still quite common for universities to have "student only" gigs, perhaps elitist, perhaps just to reduce fights with the locals!

I am guessing that Hugh's comment at the end might have been for that reason.

Funny thing is, to the best of my knowledge there is not, nor ever has been, a University of Guildford!

I assume it was the University of Surrey in Guildford.

  • Apparently there were a few twee little parties organised by the University nobs where the guests were given tickets, thus denying other fans the chance to attend, according to HCs' autobiography "A multitude of sins"

  • your correct surrey

  • Greatest band around, forever legends!!!!!!!!

  • always top of their game no offence but they would ave not kicked just heamorged oassis litle minds. alright our kid ?

  • right on

  • Charming Boys! These guys had a colourful reputation in their heyday, just like Oasis!!! Goes to show, bad boys make the best music!

  • haha! Oasis! yeah good joke

  • Incredible version ... but i was waiting for Hugh's crying solo ... and nothing ... why, why WWHHHYYyyyy ?

Nobody to speak of the keyboard player ? A Master full of dexterity and hi-speed.

Its keyboard must have reached 500°C ;-)

  • Dave Greenfield may be the most underrated keyboard player in rock history, and lots of Strangler fans know that.

  • @finylvinyl66 How old is Jet Black now? He was in his 40's around this time! Legend!

  • beat that!

    ha ha ha.

    classic stuff and no mistake.

  • they took a boat full of speed back then

  • have you got all your crackerjack pencils? lol

  • So the story goes, the producer of "Rock Goes To College" also produced "The Old Grey Whistle Test". Which is why they never appeared on TOGWT after this (brief haha!) performance.

  • Everyone wants to play bass guitar in Strangler bands. Haha

  • ...and I thought I was the only one!?

  • i cant believe how fast this version is,unbelievable

  • Yes, and they play it with such cool, intense mastery! It's a great performance of a great song by an incredibly skilled and serious band.

  • I'm a bassist, and have been in Stranglers cover bands, and can vouch for how difficult some of Burnel's lines can be to copy faithfully, such a strange heady mixture of intellect, sheer brutal violence and beautiful melodies.

  • OOoohhhh Yes !

I am crumbling under the hard work to play like him .... but it is an orgasm when you succeed playing 3 or 4 measures consecutively !

    Raaaaahhhhhhh !

  • Most excellent,thanks for posting.

'We hate playing to elitist audiences, so fuck off'

Not entirely surprising they were never mainstream is it ?

  • Crackerjack...lol

  • I am sorry (if I sound crazy here) but this is the best rock song I have ever heard. Brilliant musical composition, existential 'atmosphere' (due in part to atheistic lyrics), exciting yet beautiful at the same time, and superbly played with stunning harmonies.

  • @calsed This is too fast here, though, don't you agree?

  • @calsed So true. Without trying to sound like a dick, its all about the modulation to the minor just before Hugh brings Our Lord into the story. As a Christian I can only say He'd be well impressed.

  • dave greenfield's keys work was incredible. one of the most underrated keys guys ever, poor sod.

  • I'm a keyboard player and you are so right.

What Greenfield does in this song is VERY

difficult. The Stranglers were lumped together with the Sex Pistols, Clash etc.

because they shared the same era and attitude, but they were miles ahead of the others musically.

  • im also a keys man, and although i can play this, its not without difficulty..a fair bit of rehearsal is needed beforehand.

  • CRACKERJACK

  • Hell of a Bassist...JJ B.

  • Cool as f**k and what a bass sound, apparently a Rickenbacker pickup in a Fender precision bass....

  • great!

  • Wonderbra !!!!

  • Fantastic live! Stranglers in their prime! Wish Hugh would rejoin the band, and they go back out on tour! New Stranglers just not the same!
