After years of seeing brooding, mediocre manufactured pop stars on TV, American teenagers were literally dumbstruck by these four obviously mega-talented brits, singing and playing with true joy like their lives depended on it. This one moment literally inspired thousands of musically-inclined kids in every corner of the country to form pop and rock bands. Such a moment will never happen again.
@PC3900 Oh please. The greatest period of american music was 1955 through 1965. Give the Beatles some credit that they were a big hit due to their own talent rather than a lack of competition.
@John1948OneC3 You're correct on both counts - I didn't mean to imply otherwise. But on national shows like Sullivan's in '61-'63, the real artists often took a back seat to the manufactured stars, and teenagers were hungry for the real thing.
@PC3900 Ah, are you forgetting Elvis? But it's true. After the deaths of Buddy Holly Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, american music had become rather stale. Add the Kennedy assasination to the mix and 3 months later, bam! the Beatles.
@bolex62 Buddy Holly died in 1959. Here are some hits from 1960: Save The Last Dance For me - The Drifters; Teen Angel - Mark Dinning; Everybody's Somebody's Fool - Connie Francis; Stay - Maurice Williams & Zodiacs; Chain Gang -Sam Cooke; Handy Man - Jimmy Jones; Where Or When - Dion & Belmonts; Good Timin' - Jimmy Jones; You Talk Too Much - Joe Jones; Baby (You've Got What It Takes) - Dinah Washington & Brook Benton; Finger Poppin' Time - Hank Ballard. Not so stale.
@John1948OneC3 ....Lipstick On Your Collar - Connie Francis 1959, Teenager In Love Dion & The Belmonts 1959, Come Softly To Me 1959 Fleetwoods. all GREAT songs. And I love Perry Como lol. Wasn't too specific in last post. I meant in terms of record sales and the fact they changed the course of music, much as Mowtown did, etc.
@Llarmas Of course I saw it. That isn't what I was responding to though. I was responding to "After years of seeing brooding, mediocre manufactured pop stars on TV" which was just not true. The Beatles had great talent but no omre than The Beach Boys, Elvis, Roy Oribison or Dion.
This was the first of their singles I bought in 1964. Didn't have enough for 2 singles.. the other contender being I Wanna Hold Your Hand. I was 10 and wanted to see them in Miami Beach since I lived in Miami, but no such luck.
@hankaaron1961 the beatles meaning john george paul and ringo only took a month to get big in the uk, it was hard for them to get famous in america they had records send over their like 'please please me' 'she loves you' 'from me to you' and they all flopped, got the information from anthology. but i see what you mean when you say it took them four years in the u.k you were taking about before ringo

Sound has been altered. The audience was screaming so loud that night you could barely hear the vocals. At school the next day everyone was talking about this.
@John1948OneC3 Hahaha thanks i love this song! Yeah i saw "February 9" and I was like if only i'd been born before so for my birthday I could've went to their concert.
It's been 49 years since this was released. Unbelievable.

What is so amazing here is how these guys are in a state disbelief. Watch Ringo's reaction at 0:53, and how John looks back at George 1:32.
It took 4 years to conquer the U.K., and only one month for the grand stage of the U.S.
