I've seen the form you have to fill out to donate blood (it's on the Canadian Blood Services website) and I told myself if I ever donated blood I wouldn't check the box that says I've had sex with a member of the same sex (which would disqualify me instantly). yeah that pisses me off, a few months ago the town I lived in had a donation clinic set-up and to think if either my boyfriend and me wanted to donate blood we would've been denied!!! if they're not sure whether the blood donated by people isn't disease free then they can always check it, there should not be any need for such discrimatory law/s!!!

I've read numerous studies that have suggested that brain chemistry is indeed different between gay people and straight people, for multiple hypothesized reasons. I haven't read that it's necessarily an "imbalance", but rather a predisposition to certain sexual activity based on different hormonal exposure in the womb.

are you referring to the new set of regulations set out in nov 2007? it became hot news in feb. this year, but george smitherman (former health minister of ontario, also gay) got his paws all over the health department and they agreed that it is the patient and physician's discretion to use organs from gay donors. but perhaps ur talking about a new development.. which would be unfortunate

I wonder where she donates, I've never seen a gender specific questionnaire and I've never had one ask about a relationship, but rather "sexual relations" (which aren't necessarily the same lol) It's all silly - a gay man is no more of an AIDS risk than I am and yet, they hound me for my blood. That is EXACTLY why the places I donate take the blood anyway, even though they won't use it - for privacy issues and I imagine, to not make the person feel like a freak (because you're not). I'm sorry we still live in a society that treats you that way. No one should be made to feel bad when trying to do something nice, like save a life. I'd take your blood if I ever need any.

That's the part I don't get - it's all tested the same way, so why would your blood be any different from mine as a risk? I could be a drug user or have unprotected sex (I do neither) so my blood could be a risk as much, if not more than yours, but since I'm not gay, they'll take mine and not yours. I simply don't get that. Besides, straight folks do what gay men do, so where is the added risk from a gay man that they seem to think doesn't exist in straight people? They are so stupid.

They don't even ask on the questionnaire, "Have you had unprotected sex in the past 12 months?" There's a MAJOR risk factor right there and yet, they don't ask that question of straight folk like me. And to answer your question, blood donated for tranfusion is tested for HIV so what difference does it make who donated it? They will even contact a person they learn tested positive. I think they're stuck in the 80's when AIDS was "a gay man's disease" and they fail to get with the times. ANYONE can get it via sex, IV drug use, etc. But my biggest bone of contention is, as I've already said, straight people do the SAME exact sex acts as gay men, but your blood is bad and ours isn't? *eyeroll*

Since STDs are at an all time high in Edmonton for any college student with any sexual preference. So the whole being choosy with blood donors is a little pathetic. I've always thought the ban from organ and blood donation was complete bullshit. I've seen the form you have to fill out to donate blood (it's on the Canadian Blood Services website) and I told myself if I ever donated blood I wouldn't check the box that says I've had sex with a member of the same sex (which would disqualify me instantly). I mean, what are they going to do to try and disprove my claim? Set up hidden cameras in my bedroom? Maybe a sexy male decoy a la the Maury show?

I don't know. I don't see it as discrimination as HIV affects gay men disproportionally to straight men. If you ask me, the gay community needs to admit where it fucks up and try to correct itself instead of just playing the discrimination card. If we want to be respected we need to fix our image, and I'm not saying that all the accusations are right, but let's face it, we do need some PR cleanup.
