  • Where's Butthead's butt?

  • um...may I ask why you happen to have a Beavis and Butthead figure?

  • @TokyoNerd I can't remember, but I have had them since before I came to Japan and Nina found them.

  • @geofinjapan It just seems like an odd to have in Japan, either way I enjoyed this and all of your videos!

  • lol, Beavis and Butthead

  • I'm always impress with You and Nina ... I love Herr like my Own :) excellent job Jeff, and Mama

  • Excellent work. MY daughter could do all the parts in Japanese which I thought was pretty awesome by itself. We never bothered to teach her the English words.

  • Nina is so cute and it's so impressive how she switches languages =) My nephew is due next month, and he'll be raised to speak English and Spanish/Catalan. I'll have to show this to my brother!

I see Nina's name is written in katakana - is there any particular reason for that? =)

  • @MissAyeGo Yes, you should encourage your brother to use both English and Spanish/Catalan around the house from the time your nephew is born. Probably one language will be dominant, and that's OK. You don't need to be too strict for the first few years about what language your nephew responds in. The important thing is just that he be exposed to both languages in a consistent manner from a young age. Good luck to them!

  • @geofg I will pass that on. Thank you!

  • She's such a smart little girl :D

  • oo my god!!!!!!!!!you so cute baby...........

  • (*゚▽゚)ノ too cute .. i watch her everyday [im so addicted to her] ~

  • I WANNA KISS HER

    SOOOOOOO CUTE

  • thumb up for Nina.cutest girl. ^^

  • Comel\(^o^)/

  • im officially jealous of them :)

  • 天才だ!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow~~ That was so_ so_ so_ cute!!!!

  • oh wow, watching back now, Nina has come so so far! She's so bright for a 5 year old girl, with 2 languages under her belt, now that's some great parenting :D

  • lol Bevis and Butthead? Seriously! I love that.

  • @CelloPlaya08 Finally, Beevis and Butthead do something with their lives.

  • @zinnerah Thanks! I've been using English with Nina pretty much since she was born, and her mother has always used Japanese with her.

  • camera ni chuu~ XD

  • whoa that's impressive!

how could you find any idea to filming your daughter and then upload it on youtube? she's really famous now :)

  • @redheaded26 We just filmed her so we could show our family and friends in America at first.

  • does nina sometimes find any trouble in speaking? i mean, she's talking in 2 languages but she's still a kid, so it must be hard though.

  • @redheaded26 Well, since her mother and I can speak both English and Japanese, if Nina doesn't know a word in one language, she'll just say it in the other language, so she doesn't really have too hard a time.

  • LOL @ trying to kiss the camera... hahaha.. XD

  • wow she is seriously one smart girl!!! :)

  • may i ask, is Nina is pure Japanese or mix? im impress with her ability to talk with two languages..

  • @vanillasky9009 Thanks. Her mother is Japanese and I am American.

  • i think now that nina is older, she should teach us some japanese in her next video!

  • OMG... She's a genius.. not all 19 months old can be THAT smart.. :O

  • man, i like your videos about your daughter nina, btw, how are you guys? is everything alright over there? i really hope you guys are in safe condition from any disaster.

  • @fitinamasaya We are fine here in Nagoya. Several smallish earthquakes over the last few days, but no damage that I've heard of. We feel really lucky. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

  • awww cute x3 <3

  • woow shes so smart!

  • wow! im so impressed with u, nina's daddy. :) im gonna use nina as one of my examples in my assignment - child bilingualism

  • @sheida014 Thanks! Are you studying for a degree in linguistics?

  • @geofg yes, linguistic is part of my major courses. im studying teaching English as second language. now im in the UK doing my degree. :) hope it is okay to use your daughter as an example. i really impressed by the way you teach nina two languages at the same time. your daughter must be very good in both language i would say. may i know what is her first language? is it english or japanese?

  • @sheida014 No, I don't mind if you use Nina as an example. Nina's dominant language is Japanese, though she has heard both Japanese and English since she was born. She goes to daycare all in Japanese, and all her friends use Japanese so that is her stronger language, of course.

  • nina,u were so chubby n cute!!!!!! :)

  • @shiralib Yes, she was! I forget how chubby she was until I go back and look at these earlier videos.

  • I cannot experess to you how delightfully amused I am at the fact that you used Beevis and Butthead as learning tools. That kind of made my day. :)

  • @pinds83 ha ha I'm not sure they are the best role models, but somehow they came into my possession and Nina found them so, for better or worse, they are part of our lives now.

  • @geofg haha. Well, I suppose as long as she's not watching their show, she will be just fine. ;)

  • oh my...she's so clever

  • ure doing a great job papa n mama...nina is a gem!hope she grows up happy and blessed!;-)

  • あ~ おもしろおおい! メッチャ 笑っちゃったっ♪

That was one tricky quiz for NINAちゃん!! lol

    ”That's Buttheads!” LOL バットヘッドが 好きなのねっ?!

& the pauses between NINA-chan figuring the words from Japanese & English is LOL*

the lil hands wondering around thinking too was LOL kawaii~*

    NINAちゃん 一歳ちょいで 良く出来ました~~~~*

  • @0ooViVioo0 I haven't seen this in a long time. She was so young! Thanks for reminding me of this one.

  • Honestly guys, I've been watching these videos for a few days now and the jury was out on how I felt about Nina. However the verdict is in: I'm delighted and amazed at her growth and development. More importantly, I'm really excited at the future of one day having a mixed Japanese-Canadian child of my own. Children really are precious, and Nina is a gem (ママとパパも!)

ニーナちゃん本当にがんばって! Stay humble and love your mixed heritage!

  • @shimokitakid Thanks for the comment! We try to tell Nina often that her mixed heritage is a blessing so she will feel proud of being different, rather than embarrassed by it.

    Are you Japanese-Canadian?

  • @geofg No, I'm Canadian, but I have an amazing Japanese girlfriend. Although we live apart at the moment, your videos help us stay connected and keep our relationship in a positive and forward place - which is pretty cool!

Actually I have a two-part question for you:

Do you and your wife ever get a little apprehensive of showing ニーナ to the world rather than a private youtube link? And are you worried about how her online fame could affect her negatively?

  • @shimokitakid Indeed, we do think about that and worry sometimes. I did not start making these videos with the intention of getting subs. It was just a free way to share them with friends and family in the U.S. But, suddenly all these people we don't know started subbing to them. I try to always make the vids in a safe, non-suggestive way, and I think most people who view them are supportive and friendly. And, I don't plan to continue forever. Maybe another year or so.

  • i used to be my nephew's nanny when he was a baby and toddler ~ we tried to stick in chinese whenever we could (he's half) but i don't speak it so it was difficult. he's forgotten most of it except phrases like good morning and simple words like milk, etc. one thing he does remember though is "jeep jeep" (kiss) ~ nina just made me think of that.

i subscribed awhile ago but had never gotten around to watching the older videos. she's so different as a baby! wow i've got some catching up to do!

  • @kmah88 Thanks for the comment!

Yes, I'm even surprised when I go back and look at these older videos. Nina really has changed a lot.

How old is your nephew now?

  • @geofg it's hard for me to believe but he'll be 7 at the end of this month! (there are a few videos of him on my channel)

enjoy this time with nina ~ they grow up sooooo fast! (i already know you do though)

  • soooo cute!!!

  • i wonder what is nina's reaction to these videos when she's much older. huh....

  • @kianyen I wonder that, too. That's why we will stop before she starts elementary school.

  • He's 18 months today!

  • My son was 15 months old when he was able to identify Ears, Feet, Belly and Nose in Japanese but I can't seem to get English through to him. You can find that video under the search: Knows Ashi.

    Nina is very smart!

  • @popcornshower How old is your son now? Nina did say some words in English from fairly early on, but she was reluctant to use English with me until she was about 3. I knew she could understand me, but she only spoke in Japanese. Then, suddenly, she just decided one day she wanted to try using English with Papa. Not all the time, of course, but when she was in the mood. I'm sure English is getting through to your son, and he will decide to use it when he feels ready. Don't get discouraged

  • i started to learn english when i was 7, japanese when i was 18. but i believe nina can speak better than me in both languages ^^

  • @shinreifreakz ha ha

  • I like this video most, she is soooo cute (^_^).

  • omg she's a genius! body parts + 2 language lessons in one go! Man...

  • She melts my heart. I wish I have a child as cute and clever like her.

  • heh. butt face. xDDDDD

  • Lol, a two year old knows who Beavis and Butthead are. That's kind of awesome. <3

  • you guys wanna adopt a 24 year old looking to work in nippon?? :D~ preferably around kyoto :D?

  • <3^10 she's gonna take over the world w/ her videos O.O

  • Japanese/English 101 wow!!! very good Nina!!

  • omg! those cute fluffy cheeks!

  • haha, Beavis and Butthead just scored, heh-heh-heh, uhuhuhuh

  • Gosh, she sure has grown up now. Watching these kinds of videos is a good reminder that kids learn languages better in person rather than parking their cute little butts in front of an educational video. xD

  • @LilytheFrilly Yeah, that's especially true in Nina's case, I think. She is so social and loves to communicate so much that just sitting around and talking and playing seems much more effective than trying to make her "study" English.

  • that guys are a bad infuence people

  • "heenna...neenna, neenna"

    "how's that, nina?"

    "neenna, neeenna, neenna"

    lol thats so funny

  • She is so so so lucky. Growing up bilingual seems like such a blessing... I've had so much trouble learning a 2nd language.. wish my parents taught me when I was little haha

  • I know how you feel. I started learning Japanese when I was 32! It has really been a challenge, and I will never have great pronunciation. Oh, well. At least we are trying. Some people never learn a second language.

  • lol you actually taught me how to say all those things now............you make me want to learn japanese!

  • ha ha Glad to help!

  • 子供の学習能力ってほんと凄いですね。

  • 確かに子供は特別な言語才能があるんですね。僕も若いころから日本語習えばよかったなとよく思います。

  • She's so small in this vid :P but still very smart!

  • I wish Nina, Geof and the mother a very happy life, you should give her a sister or brother soon

  • "mama says kuchi, papa says mouth"

    hehe i like that

  • @liyananaznim >yeah it's so cute..haha

  • Cuteness of Nina really melts my heart... such a dollll...God Bless Nina... ^^

  • LOL CUUUTEEEE

  • How Nina talks is sooo cuttee!!

  • Where do you guys live? lol

and are you showing nina japanese and english?

    And what language are you?

  • We live in Japan. I speak mostly English with Nina, and her mother speaks to her in Japanese, so she can understand and speak both.

  • so cuuuuttteeee!!!!!!!!!!!! ^.^

  • Its Cute How she Kisses The Camera,

And My Litrtle 5yr old Brother wAS watching and learning Along With Me!

  • That's true. I just think it's cute the way Nina goes back and forth between languages (and gets confused).

  • yeah :)

  • nina

    KAWAII!!!!

  • this is too adorable

  • so hana means flowers and nose?

  • Yeah. There are a lot of words like that in Japanese.

  • like kami = god, hair, paper

  • Yes, good example.

  • adorable!!!

once again, big CHUs from Italy!!! ^_^

  • she is so clever.

  • Beavis and Butt-head!! Awesome.

  • konban wa

    kawaii

awwz nina is co cute, i wanna take her home but i cant because thats kidnapping and thats wrong. haha. oj.

    mate ne

    Donny

  • yo i give nina a hug. what's a hug in japanesse? OOOOO

  • Hug is dakko in Japanese.

"Dakko, shite ageru," means, I'll give you a hug.

    And, thanks.

  • How about "Dakishimete" ? I thought that was hug or something else.. Sorry if it's wrong ^^;;

  • Yeah, you're right. I think probably dakko suru is used more when referring to kids, and dakishimeru more when referring to adults. Maybe. I'll ask my wife...

  • I love the way her finger stops at her mouth when she was trying to point to her nose, hahaha.

  • Oh my God,this baby is way too much cute!!! I love her, she's gorgeous,so beautiful!! ^^ Her voice is so cute!

  • Thank you so much!

  • Your daughter is so adorable and smart

She makes me want to have a baby soon..... :((

I hope that I can learn English as fast as her.....

    I'm Nina's number 1 fan............ d(^o^)b

PS: Your Nihongo is very good too, how long have you been studying Japanese? And have you dream in Japanese yet?

  • Thanks so much! Your English seems fine. What's your first language? You're living in America now?

I've been in Japan for about 10 years now. I do sometimes dream in Japanese, and I talk to myself in Japanese. Ha ha.

    Thanks again!

  • Thanks... Yes, I've been living in the US almost a year right now and my first language is Indonesia.

I was born in the US though.

When I was 2 years old we came back home and my parent is Indonesian. This is the reason why my English is not that good... :(

I'm addicted with Nina's videos.... and I always recommend to my friends...

    Nina Rocks!!!

  • super cute!!

she speaks english better than me.

  • wow .. she's so smart

undestanding 2 language that age ..

    amazing ... what a kid .. hahaha

hope i can meet her one day .. so cute so smart ..

nice parenting also .. hahaa .. good job mommy and daddy

  • Thanks! I guess because I started speaking English to Nina since she was born, and her mother only speaks Japanese to her, it was natural for her to understand both languages. I wish I had heard Japanese since I was born. It was really hard to learn it as an adult!

  • So cute and so clever!!!

    Omedeto!!!

  • I no longer feel guilty by playing Pink Floyd's lullabies, now that you use Beavies and Butthead as learning tolls! LOL! BTW, my daughter loves Nina's videos, she squeals in delight when she watches her. Seems like Nina has a fan club now!

  • Ha ha! I know Beevis and Butthead aren't good roll models, but she found those somewhere and decided they are her freinds. She makes them kiss each other in the bathtub. Ha ha. And, I love Pink Floyd, BTW.

    How old is your daughter?

  • sweeeeeet ^^

  • ^__^ so adorable!!

  • She is so adorable and sweet! She really speaks English quite well, I think. Especially for such a young child who lives in Japan.

And it's also good for my Japanese =P

  • Thank you! It has been hard to get her to use English while living in Japan, so I appreciate your encouragement.

  • Hahaaaa and whooooo was it, telling you abut this cute little girl ^____^

  • It's so cute when you see she's thinking about what is what, in two different languages~!

    Honto nii kawaii desu yo~!

  • Thanks! Yeah, it's pretty interesting seeing how children respond to being exposed to two languages from an early age.

  • Yeah, I think that interesting too!! Unfortunately, my parents are both Dutch, so I wasn't able to learn another language as good as my first ;)

But Nina seems very a very smart girl to me, so she will be! =D

  • Your English seems great. Nina's Japanese is still much better than her English, but hopefully her English will get stronger if she has a chance to be around English speakers besides just Papa.

  • Comment removed

  • haha beavis and butthead...random

  • she is so adorable! and here i'm trying to teach my children 3 languages too. Thai, Arabic and Laos. i guess i don't really need to teach them english because they pick it up from school. but when they are home i perfer those three language. but sometime they just speak english because it easy for them.

  • Wow. That's a lot of languages! We have enough trouble just trying to teach Nina Japanese and English.

  • LOL!!! That's awesome!! I need to get some little B&B figurines. For my own enjoyment as I teach my baby Japanese. :-)

  • That was fascinating watching your Jade do the same thing, but with the languages switched. Why are you teaching her Japanese? I guess Beevis and Butthead work as props, but I'm not sure they are the best role models. LOL.

  • She teaches me Japanese language, :D, hehheeheh. Very good.

  • Glad she can help!

  • Wow you started learning Japanese at 32?! Man, with the way people talked everyone acted as if you couldn't learn it at an older age...

  • Living in Japan is the key. I think it would be really hard to just study on your own in another country. And, even if you live here, you have to work at it, but it's not impossible.

  • Oh, and sorry if it sounded offensive. I wasn't thinking when I typed it. :(

  • Not at all. It's true. I actually appreciate your comment, because it just shows how much harder I had to work to learn Japanese than a younger person would. ;)

  • Aww! Nina is so kawaii! It's great that you and your wife are teaching her both English and Japanese. My mum's Danish and my dad's American, and we live in the US, but I never learned Danish because my mum gave up trying to teach us after my older brother only spoke English. I'm sad that I never learned Danish, because I can't speak to some of my relatives who cannot speak English, so I'm sure Nina will appreciate your efforts when she is older. Keep up the hard work! Ganbari-mas!

  • Thanks for the input! I think in our case it's easier because we live in Japan, so Japanese is a given, and everyone in Japan wants to learn English, so we are motivated to teach her English, too. Why don't you start studying Danish now?

  • Danish is a language only spoken in Denmark, and it's hard to find good resources to learn such a remote language here. I've been looking into the matter, but the closest I've found is German. I'm saving up to buy a copy of Japanese Rosetta Stone, and if it's a good program I'll see if they have a Danish edition. It's easier to learn a new language at my age than yours, eh? ^_^

  • Yeah, obviously the first five or six years are the best time for learning a foreign language, but I do still think it's easier in your 20s than in your 30s. I started learning Japanese at 32. Of course, I live in Japan, so that makes it easier. Good luck! Is Rosetta Stone a good program?

  • Its discouraging because you hear on the net that once you've passed 12 years old that its impossible to learn a language. I want to believe its not true.

  • it's not impossible at all. it's just a little harder for older people.

  • Yeah french could be great, but I want to learn to speak Japanese, I've started practicing japanese in grade 9 then stopped but now im in grade 11 and i want to take more interest in it. 16 is a good age to start learning XD?

  • 16 is a lot better than 32. Every year exchange students come to the school I work at for a year from different countries and after being here a year they can speak Japanese pretty well. If you have a chance to visit Japan (as a student or otherwise), you should take it.

  • Thats really cool that she is learning two languages. Awsome.

It's really sad I think that when we start to reach teen years our ability to learn language really become harder. *Siiigh* I had to learn french at 6 years old, Im really bad at verbs though XD.

    Btw can you speak 日本語?

  • Yeah, I agree with you, absolutely. Chilren's brains are made for learning. I can get by using Japanese, but I started learning Japanese when I was 32! Very tough.

That's cool that you can speak French.

  • I wouldn't teach my kids saying "Butt head". I don't agree with certain language in your videos but otherwise cute videos.

  • "Butt" is not usually considered to be a bad word. And, I am much less concerned with WHAT words Nina uses as HOW she uses them. I don't want her to use derogatory words when referring to others, for example. In the case of the character "Butthead", that is already his name, so... But, as parents, we all have to find a set of morals we can feel comfortable with. I'm sure you will instill good morals in your own child.

  • I guess it is bad "if" you call someone name like that. I just hope that Nina is not watching their show tho...lol

Sorry I didn't mean to be offensive or anything.

  • No, she doesn't watch their show. I'm not sure where I got those figurines from, but she found them in my drawer. lol

    No offense taken.

  • I agree with what you say 100%, also I find it very good that you try to speak with your daughter in English and your wife speaks with her in Japanese :) to introduce two very different languages to a young girl is hard but with time it will be in her own advantage. You have a bright little girl she puts a smile in my face everyday Nina is becoming a part of my life and I'm learning from you and your wife a lot about parenting. and again I really meen it when I say god bless Nina's soul :)

  • Thanks so much. As for Nina becoming bilingual, all we do now is to each speak to her in our own native language. I hope you are right, that with time she will come to speak more in English, too. As for parenting, we don't do much besides just love her and try to give her a stimulating environment. But, thank you so much for the compliment.

  • We don't designate days for languages either. I try to use English and her mother uses Japanese. That's all we do. Nina doesn't like to use English, but she seems to understand it alright. I can't imagine trying to teach her 3 languages!

  • what a cute baby !!!

i've a daughter too and i'm trying to teach her 3 languages !! that's hard!

i'm german, her father italian, but since we both met we speak english with each other ....and my bro in law is japanese ...and she loves the song "oishirigashirimushi" butt-biting fly!!!

  • Three languages! Wow. To be sure, starting young is the best idea. So, do you use mostly English around the house? Do you have Italian day or German day?

I love Oshirikajirimushi too. Only Japan could come up with a butt biting bug.

  • hah hah very interesting!!!

  • I have a 3 year old daughter who is learning to speak Indonesian (my language) and Mandarin. It is not easy since she likes to speak english all the time. Thanks for sharing your daughter's video.

  • I know what you mean. Nina much prefers to use Japanese to English. Everyone in her life uses Japanese except me, so it is hard to motivate her to use English. Good luck teaching your daughter Indonesian. I'm sure she will be able to understand it at least.

  • aw she's so adorable like a cherubi babies :D

  • awesome! i'm learning too! I took Nihonggo back in College for a sem.. I failed the class. *sniff* hahaha!

  • It's really hard to study nihongo if you don't live in Japan. But, keep trying!
