I tip my hat to you and your buddies. There are WAY to many people that would use this situation as an EXCUSE to shoot a bear. It is the last thing I would want to do, but like you, would have, only as an absolute last resort. Obviously, it was the last thing you wanted to do and you did everything you could and it resulted in a positive outcome. I respect that.

@elementalsoul86 I sure do at times. The grizzly is more important than you can fathom. I never said a person shouldn't kill a grizzly if his/her life is in danger but to ask for the extermination of grizzlies because of ignorance goes beyond reason. As for being overly emotional, I must say I am perfectly calm and clear of mind with my statements.
@loddess The grizzly Is insignificant as a species.
As far as ignorance is to be concerned, the responsibility of the state is to the well being of it's citizens. As humanity expands it's dominion, it is only reasonable to expect wild life to be managed. Eventually their boundaries and ours, will be inseperable. The conclusion to this conflict is obvious. Much like with animal husbandry, we will continue to shape the world to our needs. Clearly, we are priority, not bears. Ha..
@elementalsoul86 The boundaries between the wilderness and humans already overlap and wild life is already managed. You must be so involved in your concrete world not to notice your surroundings. You are correct, the state is responsible for the well being of its citizens hence your world devoid of other life forms will never exist. Clearly, the only priority is your selfishness which will only lead to your demise. In the end, nature always wins.
That must have been quite the rush! It is so sad that so many people forget that humans are actual just animals that belong in the wilderness as musch as any other! Great video ! @sunburst68 I didn't say it was those that harvest/process their own meat that were neanderthals, it was a comment more towards the majority of hunting videos that you see posted here. i wonder how the native americans co-existed with these bears, when back in the day there were a lot more bears and other predators than today, and they didn't have guns.
@shubroto81 My hypothesis: Native americans would almost always stay in small groups when they moved about hunting, trading, etc. Rarely will a bear attack a group of more than 3 people as long as they stay together. Plus native americans probably had better instincts for avoiding bears since they naturally lived among them generation after generation. I don't know :)
@Sherpaful That may be so, BUT, I dont believe the natives kept very good records of all the bear attacks that happened from the dawn of time till now. I would bet that Alaskan Brownies, Grizzlies, Blacks and Polar bears all dinned on a Native or 2. Just my 2 cents
WOW, i cant imagine having to cope with this kind of danger whilst out fishing - only thing we have worry about whilst fishing here in the UK is the odd cow :-). I have to say you guys did pretty well to keep your cool. You look and obviously know what you are doing, which is probably imperative - fishing in such a destination.
Wow that made the hair on my neck stand up! You guys kept your cool better than I would have.....I would have shot her! Good Job all of you! Pay no attention to the bad comments there are lots of people understand what you did was more than right!
Yeah I had to watch that again I still get scared from time to time over that day I know how you feel you did a great job keeping it togeather I'm glad you dident have to go it alone I nearly had to shoot mine as well I haven't been back but my brother and I intend to go with two other friends soon I will never go alone again
Yep been there .... But I dident have any one with me to help with the terror I Judy kept yelling hey bear stop and finally put a round in the dirt in frount of him it stopped and paced back and forth for a bit and started to come on again and I fired my final warning to which it stopped again and Sisley ran off as I was lined up for the head shot to be the third it's an unforgettable experience
i have a suggestion next time you're out there in bear country. you know them fireworks that make a really big boom? bring a few with you. the ones that go up in the air and make a big boom might be even better. unless of course the bear gets so scared he runs to you to protect him! LOL
I may be from Minnesota and know nothing about hunting, but I have read enough about bears to know they are relentless hunters and will even stalk and kill humans. Solution? Bring a fully automatic machine gun and some bear pepper spray. Bears can survive a few shots and keep coming, but no bears going to survive 600 rounds per minute out of an uzi.
Good job! I have a rule about grizzly's and that is that if they are 500+ yrds away you're safe to film. Under 500 yrds and I trade my camera for rifle.
Black bears are the animals that are scared off easily. Grizzly bears will bite your face off if you yell and scream. Know the difference save your life.
@oytrontario ALL bears are unpredictable and BTW brown bears and black bears kill more people than grizzly bears.
Fish and Wildlife in my state hands out riot 12 gauge slugs if you have a bothersome bear. Sometimes these rubber slugs scare them off, sometimes they ignore them. When it comes to bears there are no set rules as to how they will act.
@ThePinkDaises Yes, but in the last 100 years only a little more than 100 people have died from bear attacks - 52 of them from black bears alone. Polar bears have killed a handful and brown bears (which includes Kodiak bears, the Coastal Brown Bears, and Grizzly bears) have killed 50 people.
I guess I should have just said that Black Bears kill more people than any other bear.
I actually posted a comment before the video was over. I didn't realize there was more, after the camera was recovered. Anyway. The people that think this video is fake or sucks...are the ones who wouldn't have made it back from that situation. You guys did good. If that was me---I would have done the same...but my patience would have been a little less (at holding back from shooting the bear). My hat goes off to you guys for not doing so.
It's funny how people call this a fake video just because the rest isn't being filmed. I bet if they were there, they wouldn't be alive to post the video---They would have died trying to film the rest of what is missing. They're also the type that would have gone into the wilderness without protection of any kind. As for being in the bear's 'backyard'---We have every right to be there and every right to protect ourselves (just like an animal). Anyway. Great video. Glad you guys made it out safe!
u guys where luck and as for ppl post what u should of done while they werent there but ill tell what i would of done i would shot it on spot then shot again still either stop moving or my gun was out.thise next part for the animal lovers and tree hugers u ppl who dont hunt or fish dont know any thing about thise anamils bears are mean u want hug them and all their thinking how many bites can i eat thise in
Shut the heck up all u hippie tree huggers, u would just let the bear eat u because u wouldn't want to hurt it? Yeah right. These guys did a good job handling the situation.
You should'nt really screw around with a Griz - letting it know your there when it is coming your way is a good idea. My brother,(while creek cleaning) on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.,yelled at a big black bear that appeared on the opposite bank.Instead taking off,it charged across the creek at him - my brother had time to scurry through the bush with his chainsaw at the ready - just in case.
This looks like a bear wandering around hundreds of yards in the distance, and an overreaction by hunters looking for a reason to fire their guns. Bears don't 'charge' from the other side of a valley. I'm glad there wasn't an encounter and you left safely, but the whole dramatized portrayal in the video is pretty silly.
@PhoneWest yeah, bears will charge and im pretty sure it wasnt from the other side of a valley, more like 100 yards, thats a big ass bear, like bigger than you know. You would be scared
Another case of how to handle a bear encounter. This one was more of a "What're those doing on my turf? I'm gonna go check it out." situation. Could've been worse. Bears aren't really caring whether the human will bite them in the process, but the possibility of getting a hole put in them, or otherwise being disabled makes them learn to keep their distance.
I grew up here in Alaska. Kodiak as a kid and then S.E. for high school. Over my 37 years in Alaska I cam personally say that I would need a second set of hands to count the number of times I have been in the same situation. No point in shooting the bear if your not going to eat it. So no need to shoot warning shots @ 300 yards. But once that bugger gets under 100 yards, it's hands on the gun and if it keeps charging after 3 warning shots, I go for the kill shot.
Have only had to kill one bear in this situation. And it is the only bear I have ever killed. All tho, as a kid growing up in Kodiak, my father told me to always have a bear tag just for such a case. If I am forced to kill a bear to protect me, my family, or my property. I wan that meat to go in my freezer and I want the hide on my wall.
I have never had a bear approach me ever, but I used to have a friend who died as a result of a bear attack in roughly the same situation, except the bear didn't even flinch when warning shots were fired. The bear was shot, but didn't die before it had a chance to kill him. I commend you for waiting as long as you did - I really can't say how long I would have waited, but I can tell you this - I wouldn't take a chance on using anything other than a large caliber hand gun or rifle.
Intense, a Grizzly too! I commend you all for scaring the bear away.
I have been thinking about bear spray, but I hike more than hunt, and pack light. The spray seems to heavy for backpacking, and bears are usually "bearish" and I just stay out of their way when I see one.
I acted like I worked at animal planet on my last Mt Mitchell hike and recorded a bear eating a campers backpack until it stomped the ground, letting me know I was too close.
You did the right thing. I've got no problem with somebody defending life and property. In a case like this there was an obvious threat to both. I disapprove of trophy hunting, which I think is twisted and sick behavior, but hunting for food or shooting a bear in self-defense is reasonable. In this case both you and the bear went your separate ways unharmed. That's what I'd call a good outcome.
What is the best kind of firearm for alaska? I'm 19, and when I'm older I want to live in Alaska. It's truely the best wilderness state with some of the most amazing big game and landscapes. Would a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs be good? I see you are using a bolt action rifle. For bear charges would a semi be better? Do you also carry a handgun as well?
@huntingmandan There is no evidence in your video that the bear ever got closer than about 8 to 10 football fields. So we have only your claim that it did. And there's good reasons to doubt you: the extreme 10x zoom; no footage of the bear without the extreme zoom on (compare the clear video of you folks at the end with the always blurry bear video -- clearly the full 10x is on each time the bear is shown); no footage of any charge at all -- just a bear milling around, 1,000 yards away.
@InContemptofCourt Go ahead and think what you want, I don't really care.If I wanted to fake a bear charge to put on youtube,I could have done a hell of a lot better job with the camera and editing than that. The real footage obviously isn't ideal,it's in the heat of the moment, and we were lucky to capture what we did.Go on being a skeptic, just realize you aren't as smart as you think you are. There was no trickery in this video, and I have 2 other people in this world that can back me up on it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Clearly a fake. First, notice that the bear was filmed using a high-powered telescopic lens -- you can see him zoom in at 18. The bear must be 10 football fields away. It never gets closer; you can see this because the bear is still blurry later in the video (due to the extreme zoom) and the camera shakes are exaggerated (also due to the extreme zoom). There is no footage of the bear within 10 football fields of them, or "charging." Inventing a "dangerous" bear encounter is lame. Lame.
@InContemptofCourt The bear does start out about 300 yards away.It works it's way in closer, and I start to yell at it when it's about 100.It was only a 10x zoom on a $400 handi cam.Not "some high powered telecsopic lens." He was still zoomed when it stood up at 80 yards, and when it charged,he dropped the camera obviously (there were 3 of us). When the bear got to 30 yards he picked the camera up,and it was still zoomed in, and obviously the intensity of the moment, he was shaking. Not a fake.
@huntingmandan i would have flipped out my four inch swiss army knife and skinned that grizz alive, you are just a yellow bellied yankee faggot, you woulda never made it home from vietnam BITCH
With all the junk you find on the interet these days, i can see how this video would be suspect. I'm a big skeptic, so I can see how someone would call B.S. on my video. Think what you want, it's ok. It won't change what happened.
@huntingmandan Well, you had an exciting 'near bear experience' and you did the right thing by scaring it away. A lot of people would have shot the bear and claimed it as a DLP incident where they were "forced" to shoot. This time the bear got to live another day and hopefully learned to stay away from humans. I hope you caught a few fish that day.
@InContemptofCourt your clearly a retard, the reason you dont see the bear charge is because these people have brains, they drop the camera and grab their guns, you on the other hand would rather film the charge for youtube, sad fuck.
@InContemptofCourt lol dude your just fucking plane stupid if you think this was fake! did you think they were going to wait tell the grizzly was in front of there face before they started shouting? watch the video again but not jerking off!
@huntingmandan this vid is amazing i think, the landscape is just freaking beautiful. i would love to be able go on a hunt like that.
If 'the bear gets human food it gets killed by rangers...no questions asked....just because some knucklehead was too lazy to put food away. If people just could respect wilderness...
I think people posting nasty comments have never been in the wild before. I've done quite some hiking/backpackin/climbin' in my life and I encountered a bear a couple of times. You've gotta do what you've gotta do to protect yourselves. I'm glad you didn't have to kill the poor guy. What really upsets me when I go camping and there are signs everywhere to keep food out and people just ignore them.
That could have ended a lot worse. Do the yelling and all, but have that gun as a backup. I have been charged once before, and it went roughly the same way, right down to the shorts check. I couldn't reload the gun for 15 minutes, I was shaking so bad.
And to all the morons talking crap. If you've never experienced a one on one bear encounter; don't speak. I can't even explain the fear that engulfs you in those few seconds. Looking at a bear coming towards you, and knowing it can kill you is scary. These guys could have easily killed that bear; but they didn't. They chose it put the bears wellbeing above their own safety zone. That is respect, and I admire them for it.
Kudos to you, for ending it respectfully. 9 times out of 10 a bear can be scared off without killing it. And you guys showed that. Me and my dad were hunting up in Boone, NC and we encountered a big Black bear. It started walking towards us; a few shots in the ground and it left. Nice footage guys.
Two friends are out hiking together in the woods. Suddenly, a black bear sees them and charges. One of them starts to run and his friend says "what are you doing, we can't outrun a bear!". The other guy says "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!" HAHAHAHA
scary shit, the closest thing to a real life horror movie! and i cant belive somepeople expect perfect camera work while your making rosebuds in your boxers and going for your GUN.....geesh!
He did just about everything correctly . And no , the bear was not protecting her cubs . Cubs never leave a sow ' s sight . They are always directly in tow if not in view nearby .
I wonder what would have happend if you were only by yourself. Noise would help or not....and gosh using bearspray would mean a gamble in here...:/....nice video
I think you guys did a good job in dealing with the situation. No one got hurt, not you guys or the bear so I'd say that was a success. I think some people would have dropped the bear earlier, so it's nice to see you guys didn't want to do that.
It got pissed off when they shouted. I remember Bear Grylls on one of his shows saying that you should make as much noise as possible. He walked through bear territory shouting "yo bear" under the impression that making lots of noise wards them off.... does it fuck,.
Gave me the CREEPS just watching. Wouldn't have survived that experience, heart attack on the spot. VERY scared of effing bears. you fellows are very amiable to tolerate all the bogus macho bullshit remarks from the posters. they can go film their OWN grizzly charge....then we'd who's full of hot air.
That definitely made the hair on my neck stand up. Really great video and kudos for being a better person than me in regards to not shooting it. Sorry for everyone who expected a Hollywood movie style video of a awesome gamer head shot or something.
i was chased by a bull and im 9 my bro was sick but saw it and if he wasnt hear i would not b hear prob he told me to dunk when he was chasing me under a smoll tree and my bff was thar
I have a great deal of respect for you for NOT shooting her. In the same situation, I definitely would have shot her.
It is a choice you took, and I admire your courage for doing so, but I am not as experienced as you with bears (pigs, sure, bears, no). My only experiences with bears has been with black bears in the Appalachian mountains.
Faced with a grizzly like that, I would have erred to caution & shot her.
man what a good video. You can say all you want about camera shaking, etc. but i appreciate the fact that this incident was recorded on video. I have been in similar incidents but did not record because I was scared for my life. Thanks for posting this, it made my day
I think what I admire most about this is that you attempted to scare instead of kill. Pretty difficult to keep that mindset with an 800 pound bear charging.
fuck bears, if i was ever out exploring and a bear charged me, the mossberg with the iron slugs would come out and we'd be having bear steaks for dinner. I dont give a shit fuck bears
That bear was hunting comming slowly trying not to disturb its prey(You) you can see it in her scenting you from almost half a mile away standing to zoom in on ya Had it been me I would have shot her if she saw you as being on the menu she will see other humans big and small on the menu ...just saying but to save her you did exactly right thing!!!!
Good on ya for not killing the bear, good camera work upto a point, not that it even mattered after, the suspense was so agonising. Ive seen many bears in the bush but never a grizzly, and man i didnt know they were so agressive. The bears ive seen are small and less agressive
WHY R PPL MAD??!! GOD, GROW UP AND APPRECIATE THAT SOMEONE GOT A VIDEO OF A BEAR CHARGE AND ENDED UP NOT HAVING TO KILL THAT FEMALE BEAR. Obviously these hunters greatly appreciate nature and respect and understand the wildlife. We share the earth with bears and as they hunt we hunt, as we wander they wonder, and as they eat, we must eat..WTF is up with dissing liberals?? I'm a liberal but i respect hunters views about shooting..maybe not excessively...but stop judging. This was EDUCATIONAL!
@cubsfan01991 your supposed to shout, moron. And how about you go out in the wilderness and have a bear follow you. I'm sure you'd be mauled cause you'd try to run. So don't talk about something that you'd don't know about.
@loveismore3 Look, theres a lot of names that I want to call you but I'm going to refrain from that seeing that you're a girl. The bear wasn't following them, he was minding his own business until these idiots started shouting at them. Then they started acting like morons once they got the bears attention almost like they would of killed it if it woulda got closer. See thats my problem with them, they couldn't leave the bear alone which is why I can't stand the human race.Leave him be!!
@cubsfan01991 I would expect nothing less from a cubs fan. Do you realize how Idiotic you sound? This is closing in on one of the most retarded of the 1,200 or so posts on this page. Take your juvenile posts elsewhere.
@cubsfan01991 This is too funny. "My fat, lazy ass?" You haven't even stepped foot in the wilderness, have you? And just because you swear alot there hiding behind your keyboard doesn't make you tough. Even though you watch a lot of Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles, doesn't mean you can kick my ass. Aren't you a little old for cartoons? You can have your opinion, no doubt, but I don't appreciate the foul language on MY PAGE. Have you even seen a bear outside of the zoo? Shut your mouth then!
@cubsfan01991 Opinions are opinions; you have rights to that.
Your point about shouting is a little off, though. Shouting is generally used to discourage bears from attacking. Loud noise isn't perceived as a challenge to wild animals; it's perceived as a display of power. Many bears will back off when people shout for that reason. If you ever go hiking in a place where there are, in fact, bears, you will, get that safety tip.
"The bottom line was, that bear was threatening to harm our equipment" stupid ass you got no balls anyway whats there to protect?

@shubroto81 My hypothesis: Native americans would almost always stay in small groups when they moved about hunting, trading, etc. Rarely will a bear attack a group of more than 3 people as long as they stay together. Plus native americans probably had better instincts for avoiding bears since they naturally lived among them generation after generation. I don't know :)
Sherpaful 1 month ago
@Sherpaful That may be so, BUT, I dont believe the natives kept very good records of all the bear attacks that happened from the dawn of time till now. I would bet that Alaskan Brownies, Grizzlies, Blacks and Polar bears all dinned on a Native or 2. Just my 2 cents

Black bears are the animals that are scared off easily. Grizzly bears will bite your face off if you yell and scream. Know the difference save your life.
oytrontario 2 months ago
@oytrontario ALL bears are unpredictable and BTW brown bears and black bears kill more people than grizzly bears.
Fish and Wildlife in my state hands out riot 12 gauge slugs if you have a bothersome bear. Sometimes these rubber slugs scare them off, sometimes they ignore them. When it comes to bears there are no set rules as to how they will act.
sharkinfested 2 months ago
@sharkinfested Grizzly bears are a subspecies of Brown bears. Google it. :)
ThePinkDaises 2 months ago
@ThePinkDaises Yes, but in the last 100 years only a little more than 100 people have died from bear attacks - 52 of them from black bears alone. Polar bears have killed a handful and brown bears (which includes Kodiak bears, the Coastal Brown Bears, and Grizzly bears) have killed 50 people.
I guess I should have just said that Black Bears kill more people than any other bear.
sharkinfested 2 months ago
I actually posted a comment before the video was over. I didn't realize there was more, after the camera was recovered. Anyway. The people that think this video is fake or sucks...are the ones who wouldn't have made it back from that situation. You guys did good. If that was me---I would have done the same...but my patience would have been a little less (at holding back from shooting the bear). My hat goes off to you guys for not doing so.
ALB1937 2 months ago
It's funny how people call this a fake video just because the rest isn't being filmed. I bet if they were there, they wouldn't be alive to post the video---They would have died trying to film the rest of what is missing. They're also the type that would have gone into the wilderness without protection of any kind. As for being in the bear's 'backyard'---We have every right to be there and every right to protect ourselves (just like an animal). Anyway. Great video. Glad you guys made it out safe!

PhoneWest 3 months ago
@PhoneWest yeah, bears will charge and im pretty sure it wasnt from the other side of a valley, more like 100 yards, thats a big ass bear, like bigger than you know. You would be scared
zacsyrjaz10 3 months ago
@PhoneWest Bears can begin to charge within site of the object they're charging. It might be a bluff charge, but a charge nonetheless.

Very Scary. You guys handled the situation just beautifully, that bear was hunting, god damn, people that think pepperspray is enough - think again.
I am glad to see you survived this ordeal, Greetings from Sweden.
Michaeloxenstierna 3 months ago

But once that bugger gets under 100 yards, it's hands on the gun and if it keeps charging after 3 warning shots, I go for the kill shot.
sunluvinbum 4 months ago
Have only had to kill one bear in this situation. And it is the only bear I have ever killed. All tho, as a kid growing up in Kodiak, my father told me to always have a bear tag just for such a case. If I am forced to kill a bear to protect me, my family, or my property. I wan that meat to go in my freezer and I want the hide on my wall.

2007tacoma 4 months ago
I have never had a bear approach me ever, but I used to have a friend who died as a result of a bear attack in roughly the same situation, except the bear didn't even flinch when warning shots were fired. The bear was shot, but didn't die before it had a chance to kill him. I commend you for waiting as long as you did - I really can't say how long I would have waited, but I can tell you this - I wouldn't take a chance on using anything other than a large caliber hand gun or rifle.
justmekkb 4 months ago
Intense, a Grizzly too! I commend you all for scaring the bear away.
I have been thinking about bear spray, but I hike more than hunt, and pack light. The spray seems to heavy for backpacking, and bears are usually "bearish" and I just stay out of their way when I see one.
I acted like I worked at animal planet on my last Mt Mitchell hike and recorded a bear eating a campers backpack until it stomped the ground, letting me know I was too close.
I posted the black bear footage on my YT channel
NCmountainview 5 months ago
You did the right thing. I've got no problem with somebody defending life and property. In a case like this there was an obvious threat to both. I disapprove of trophy hunting, which I think is twisted and sick behavior, but hunting for food or shooting a bear in self-defense is reasonable. In this case both you and the bear went your separate ways unharmed. That's what I'd call a good outcome.
JackKangaroo1 5 months ago
Bear pepper spray, if you are upwind will carry out to the bear even if it is far away.
It will smell the spray before it smells you and turn away even before it detects you and starts charging.

InContemptofCourt 5 months ago
@InContemptofCourt Go ahead and think what you want, I don't really care.If I wanted to fake a bear charge to put on youtube,I could have done a hell of a lot better job with the camera and editing than that. The real footage obviously isn't ideal,it's in the heat of the moment, and we were lucky to capture what we did.Go on being a skeptic, just realize you aren't as smart as you think you are. There was no trickery in this video, and I have 2 other people in this world that can back me up on it.
huntingmandan 5 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Clearly a fake. Lame.
InContemptofCourt 5 months ago
@InContemptofCourt The bear does start out about 300 yards away.It works it's way in closer, and I start to yell at it when it's about 100.It was only a 10x zoom on a $400 handi cam.Not "some high powered telecsopic lens." He was still zoomed when it stood up at 80 yards, and when it charged,he dropped the camera obviously (there were 3 of us). When the bear got to 30 yards he picked the camera up,and it was still zoomed in, and obviously the intensity of the moment, he was shaking. Not a fake.

huntingmandan 5 months ago 6
@huntingmandan Well, you had an exciting 'near bear experience' and you did the right thing by scaring it away. A lot of people would have shot the bear and claimed it as a DLP incident where they were "forced" to shoot. This time the bear got to live another day and hopefully learned to stay away from humans. I hope you caught a few fish that day.
JackKangaroo1 5 months ago
@huntingmandan Also, it's quite clear the bear saw you guys and was interacting with you. So it was obviously close.

Issue wasn't the opinion; it was the facts.
