  • I feel ashamed. For years I thought Stewart was the dick and the reason for the Police splitting up. Now I realise it was Sting. What a cock. I would have ended up flooring him..

  • Sting come across very unlikeable in this video. Maybe he's used to being mister fabulous but realises that compared with Jools he's just an ordinary fella.

  • Sting was a dickhead

  • @jpeezy6 being a dickhead's cool

  • love sting, love the outfit, those were the days.

  • Jools Holland was the first ever MOCKNEY.

  • Whats with Sting's faux London accent? He talks with his naitive (but gentle) Geordie accent nowadays

  • he looks like a faggot with his short

  • What really annoys me is how Sting's accent changes according to his audience. On Dream Of The Blue Turtles he sounds like a pompous aristocrat...on Parkinson, when Billy Connoly was discussing his working class roots, Sting suddenly has a Geordie accent return...and here it's different again...

    Copeland rules. As does Jools.

  • happy to find this video! thanks

  • I am of course speaking of Copeland

  • my God this guy is good and damn! So easy on the eye seems a nice guy too!

  • Sting' a cock

  • Comment removed

  • if you think about it, this interview video looks like a real life "this is spinal tap" scene, especially the "it goes to eleven" scene.

  • the jam that jools andy and sting played was terrific! the bass sounded amazing!

  • make sure you keep the solo's under 8 bars andy!!!- Sting

  • are they in Montserrat in 1981? Little did they know it would be gone by a volcano years later...

  • what does jools say at 24 seconds?

  • that's the coolest bass i have ever seen

  • Oh and Andy might be a wee but coked up here too. lol Just a little.

  • They're both so high on coke. K maybe not the bloke from Squeeze but Sting definitely is

  • copeland's a beast.

  • @michaelzxhc yeah yeah yeah yeahhhhhh

  • these interviews were clearly shot RIGHT after they shot some of the video for every little thing she does is magic

  • Cool jam- shows how jazz influenced Sting & Summers are.

Jools- nice bloke, great show format, all respect to him for keeping it up all these years but I find him a terrible interviewer.

  • Yes, exactly, I really liked this little jam session as well!

  • You know where sting says play something in the key of C, how would you know where that was on the guitar.

I'm really bad at theory, I'm a guitarist, but I don't understand how keys work on guitar etc - could anyone explain?

  • I would start by learning where the notes on a piano are, as music-theory was developed on piano - 4ths, 5ths etc. All white keys are C-major scale:C, D, E, F, A, B, C - no sharps or flats. Then just copy&paste that knowledge to a guitar. And move on to the next major scale.

You'll only know it if you learn it. Just concentrate on 'C' to get the gist.

  • I had a few guitar lessons, but the guy teaching me would only show me three notes at a time. After that, I went to books and records to teach myself the guitar. Now I wish I had grown up with a piano in the house (I played guitar because my brother gave up on lessons and left his guitar lying around).

Do one thing beautifully and then move on to something harder (best advice for any artist).

  • sorry but funkybassman is a prick

  • I dunno... Sting tries his best to be humourous but fails miserably. Stewart and Andy had the humour naturally and got the laughs which pissed Sting off massively as he wanted to be like them but he never could as he came across as an arrogant twat. Basic but neat bass player though who could write a tune or two.....

  • Yeah you are right about the humor thing. Sting would be better to try self deprecating humor. The arrogant putdown style humor works better for real old pathetic looking guys ("Thank you ladies and jerks, you've been a lousy audience") etc.

  • jools was odd back in the day

  • I really dig that little jam session =]

  • "what we need is a guitarist.. somebody with skill. OH! it's andy peterson!"

  • "stewart got one............creep"

  • Awesome shorts.

  • 3:04 Holy Crap stewart.

  • he named the bass brian.

  • ...

    yes he did...

  • two words.

    spinal

    tap

    ;-)

  • three words.

    freeform jazz exploration.

but not in front of a festival crowd.

    yet.

  • Why has Sting developed a cockney accent??

  • its stewart copland not sting

  • it´s Sting with a dodgy cockney accent!

Wasn´t cool to be northern at the time I suppose..

  • its stewart copeland not stewart copland

  • pardon me i have slight disabilites one is with the fact that i carnt spell verry well but one thing i am shore of is i no a qunt when i see one and you shore are one

  • what a good responce my dear frend i love the sarcaserm

  • thank you for puting me straight

  • Didn't realise Jools Holland used to be an annoying little prat.

  • Awesome(my standard comment)

  • Holy crap...I'm not a drummer, but that is one freaking sweet drum kit!!!

  • Anyone know what scale Sting is playing in? They're playing in C but the audio must've been slightly warped so now it's in C#.

  • that was insane. thank you! :) haha, awesome.

  • OFF WITH THE GHOOLIES!!!

  • Jools is a Legend! Particularly the annual musical fart around called the Hootennaney on New Yeas Eve.

  • did sting just call stewart a creep at 41 seconds

  • 0:00-is this man Jools Holland?

  • The man in the middle is Jools Holland. And he's not Dutch...ish'nt dat veird!!!!

  • *Drool*

    I love Sting.

  • they have the best English accents xD

  • Sting is arrogant....but he is highly gifted both creatively and musically...he's a true artist, very intelligent, and very driven...this man lives and breathes music and has composed amazing songs over his long career...he is one of a kind...!

  • @dw2345

I would use cocky, because arrogant implies some sense of misdirection in one's confidence.

  • @dw2345 of course he's arrogant. They're all arrogant. Arrogance is part of the job for a rock star.

  • @dw2345

    ???

He is a good musician by pop standards, but that is not much of a measure. He is no more "gifted" than literally millions of other musicians. "His" song writing is a sham: copeland and summers' sound is what you identify as the police sound, but they don't get songwriting credits for that because it is simply "arrangement".

Gee, I wonder why sting's songwriting and career took a nose dive after leaving the police.

  • @evilsnakes1

    partly true, mostly bullshait

  • @evilsnakes1

"Sting has received sixteen Grammy Awards for his work, receiving his first Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1981, and an Oscar nomination for the best song. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame" #nosedive

  • @berto1337

...ouch, did you just say something about the grannies? I guess you have nothing but respect for Buble as well.

  • @evilsnakes1

you're right, it's pretty easy to get a grammy. Now that I think about it, don't you have five yourself? I just remembered I've been a recipient of no less than three! Sting still has us beat a couple of times over though... fuck it, some people have all the luck.

  • No one said it was easy, but neither is getting five black cocks in your ass, whatever that does for you.

A grammy does not reflect musical ability so much as it reflects commercial success, and no one will deny that Sting had commercial success. Like I said, Sting is a decent musician, but he won grammys for shit like Don't Stand So Close to Me, not his jazz musicianship. And as a jazz musician, he is only decent, not better than hundreds of thousands of musicians who do not have a grammy.

  • I don't care how many commercials use Sting's music to sell their products, the only thing Sting did that people look back and care about is the Police, and Summers and Copeland got robbed by a ridiculous songwriting credit that completely ignores arrangement and production. Without Summer's clean tone arpeggios and the unique sound of Copeland's kit and style in pop circles, Sting would have had nothing but a bunch of simple, mundane pop tunes.

  • @evilsnakes1 they split song writing royalties equally during the police and for at least 10 years after the break up. I agree with you that without andy and stewart making stings jazz tunes into rock songs they would have been a plain band. However, you cant argue with stings talent on stage. He was unreal as a lead vocailist and great during live shows.

  • @evilsnakes1

This is so true!!! Copeland's drums technique and play style is the one and only, very unique and without it The Police wouldn't be so amazing.

  • @dw2345 well spoken!

  • Why do they--especially Jools--sound as if they've inhaled a tank of helium?

  • jajaja

  • why is sting speaking in a strange mockney accent here?

  • Probably the same reason he's wearing that goofy hat.

  • I should have guessed..

  • Famous theme from Grieg LOL

  • sting might be a great bass player, but he's still a cunt IMO.

  • they should have released that jam as a b-side instead of say, "flexible strategies" for every little thing she does because, well, that was disappointing.

  • Where did Sting get this cockney accent from "its got a saaaaand"?

    Pretentious git.

  • when was this film took?

  • 1981, in Montserrat, during the "Ghost In The Machine" sessions.

  • It's not about how Sting isn't the best bass player that ever lived, it's about how he's a decent, competent bass player and can SING AT THE SAME TIME as well as writing better songs than pretty much anyone else on the planet these last 30 or so years.

  • I suppose like Peter Cetera, Sting's bass playing skills are often overlooked because of his vocals. Sting played the upright bass very well - don't hear that too much of the upright bass in pop music these days.

  • Holland seems like a twat in these videos but he's really cool these days

  • Ha ha... really brilliant interview! I liked the jam session in particular.

  • Long before Andy Stewart became involved with the police he had some success as a soloist. "A Scottish Soldier" and "Donald Where's Yer Troosers?" (English translation: "Donald Where's Your Trousers?") were big in Britain, Australia and Canada.

  • lol... 'clap trap'

  • i dont understand why you got so many thumbs downs...i actually agree with you

he looks super awkward here, but recently he definitely has developed his own style and personaility, but here hes like a wet noodle

  • thank you! somebody who understands what im talking about! not to mention...he was also a bit rude to Stewart ya know?

  • I completely disagree with your statement. On what grounds do you mean that he has no personality or sense of humour? It is actually just the opposite.

  • this is real talent...great musicians...i still wear shorts like that...!!

  • I agree, i could watch them play for hours. And all that hating on Sting just proves what a high caliber individual Sting is. Cocky with the talent, intelligence, and ambition to match.

  • All that jazz!!! i could listen to them two for hours...

  • Ah, the 'ol Adidas short shorts c/o Sting.

  • sting just jests cool your jets. hes a young guy. thats how they all act. hes just joking. dont you know how to take anything with a grain of salt?

  • yea the talented are usually perceived as such by the talentless

  • Pretty dumb! Talented people/ players usually understand whereas you creeps have no idea!!

  • I can recognise talent when I see it. By the way I can play my drum damn well so I resent the comment. Please naff off!!! Go Jools!!! Go Sting!!! Go Andy!!!

  • hear hear..

  • Joools you are very cool

  • who gives two shits about it, care to raise your fucking hand

  • these guys know eachother and are having a bit of fun - no cockery there

  • Seems normal to me.

  • i CAN SETTLE THIS! sTING IS a PERFECT COCK

  • Not sure about the perfect bit but he was the cock and Andy and Stewart were the balls, and since he's a righty, he and Stewart often clashed.

  • you are a cock! Sting is perfect!

  • stings a cock

  • Wierd, amidst all that pro gear they have a humble Tascam portastudio, (cassette 4-track).

  • Sting seems a little cocky or is that cokey?,lol.I thought him just a but rude to Jools who btw is a brilliant keysman in all respects!

  • Yeah, this is fast by a half-step.

  • Were they inhaling helium or is the sound track a bit fast?

  • Yeah, that was filmed in 1981 while they were recording Ghost in the Machine. They recorded Ghost in the machine with Hugh Padgham, instead of Nigel Gray like in the previous 3 albums, at A.I.R. Montserrat and those shots are even from there.

  • I think he said Django Reinhardt. Watch Sweet and Lowdown with Sean Penn.

  • Jools asks summers, if he's learned that Jacco Reinhart piece, he is so bad....he knows summers couldn't play it for his dinner

  • Nice shorts.

  • thats exactly wut i wuz thinking lol

  • great upload, thanks a lot!!!

very interesting, pure talents they were/are

  • holy shit awesome

  • very cool piece from a very cool era.

  • I just got a percussion boner!

  • Thank you, my friends!

  • Yes, it's recorded around the middle of 1981, during the recording of GitM.

  • Fantastic video!! I agree with another poster: this was probably filmed around the time of 'Ghost in the Machine' circa 1980-81.

  • In about what year was this filmed?

  • Is that andy summers jamming with stings and jools holland? I think he says andy peterson

  • Can be hard to tell in YouTube quality, but yeah, it's Andy Summers (I'd think the "Peterson" bit was just Sting giving him a more "jazzy" name).

Check the studio video for Spirits in the Material World. Andy wearing the same hat, same shirt etc.

  • Looks like the first part was filmed the same day as the video for "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic".

  • this IS actually cool. lol. anything for me with stewart is interesting.

  • I miss watching Sting play upright bass... sigh.

  • jools is gorgeous.

  • This is so cool!
