  • great song and great band and great memories, ehheheh....hey voiceoffear, I agree you, European Union is crap, is a bloody experiment of rich fuckers men to stole and appropiate of all money, and all material posesion of everybody.... banks and governments are working in this from many years ago in silence and in shadows, people must know this, but.....better for them is watching football or see TV shows or talk stupids things...I understand your point of view, man, I agree !!!

  • Dear Mr "voiceoffear" The Irish would not have survived without the European Union.

It would be better to keep your mouth shut rather than expose your typical ignorance.

  • any other old sod want to share their dreary, uninspiring memories of this song with us?

  • @voicesoffear What's your point? Hot House Flowers is an Irish band..... And they just get of a plain at 2:38 till 2:39...... Is that publicity for Ryanair?????

  • What a shame such crappy audio for such a great song!

  • This song is beautiful.

  • dedicated to a sweet aussie girl ;)

  • back there again......simple times

  • this song always makes me so damn happy =D

  • I'm not sure if people are aware but this song was first broadcast as the interval entertainment for the 1988 Eurovision, hosted by Ireland. It was the year that Celine Dion won the contest.

For those who aren't aware; Eurovision is the world's biggest musical event where about 40 European countries select a song to compete and viewers in each country vote for the songs. Of course in 1988 it was a lot small with only about 18 countries, before the break up of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.

  • @comeinnorway wasn't it a contestant in that Eurovision??

  • @shrew972 No. It wasn't a contestant, but the interval act. The contest was hosted in Ireland that year - the actual Irish entry was Take Him Home by Jump The Gun which came 8th. I am positive that Hothouse Flowers never competed in the Irish National Finals to select the country's entry.

I am pretty sure that Don't Go was far more successful commercial than Take Him Home.

  • @shrew972 A lot of people thought that and some thought it won the contest but it was only the interval act the same as Riverdance was.

  • Saw these guys in 1988 in an HMV in Canada. My mom just sent me a pic of Liam from the event. If anyone wants a scan, message me. :)

  • Saw these guys in the party in the park in Dublin around 88-89, they where really good i suppose when your billing with the likes of James and a lot of the Britpop giants of the time they had to perform and my word they did, good honest track.

  • loved this song when it came out - saw them perform it in Glasgow. Still great to hear

  • These fellas were in Perth, Australia. Not only do they make beautiful music but they relate to the locals where they can and are just real. Lovely Irish boys.

  • saw em in montreal 88... some venue on St Dennis i fink???... memories shot.. but this was a fuckin wicked gig... was just b4 the jazz festival??????

  • I remember having this single 45. It´s a good song. Strange video... they´re on the beach, next moment they are playing in the snow on a mountain lodge.

  • Love this song..Great Memories.

  • New interview with Liam O Maonlai of the Hothouse Flowers on:

    circlemagazine(dot)co(dot)uk

  • odlično!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Talent isn't all you need to become world famous. You have to be in the right place at the right time.

  • What ever happened to HHF? I saw them live in the 80's and they were great. Looking at them now with all my musical history they're still great! Why aren't they along side pearl jam?

  • They're still doing very well and touring. I catch once a year when they come to Mass and NH and every show is even better than the last. Liam is an absolute gorgeous angel... the rest of the boys are awesome, too, but you know :^)

  • This a great song! Loved it for many years. It reminds me of ' In the Night ' by Basia Bulat, another excellent song.

  • Fancy him like fuck

  • now ur spekin my lingo treeeffffic

  • awesome song!

  • i love this song.

    x

  • One of my all-time favorite songs!

  • Ireland never ceases to turn out outstanding music.Awesome!!!!!I love Ireland, and the accent is to die for:)

  • Yeah we rock!!!

    :P

Except for U2, Westlife and to an extent, Boyzone.

What accent is your favourite? There are about 40 different accents...from each county :P

  • oops, naughty, they happen to be my favourites.haha.and dublin accent rules.xxno hard feelings,ey.

  • Haha, I was gonna say no hard feelings...till you mentioned the dub accent...just kidding.

You should hear the Cork accent

    :P

  • This is one of the most inspired songs I've ever heard. It is joyful, but the shadows of death are there. The melody and LIam's voice are like from another world. I heard it first on a Monday when a friend brought it to me to listen. He said, "I've been listening to it continuously for 48 hours." I believed him. A very special song.

  • Funny, I know this song for about 15 years or more, and I still am addicted to it! It's from the album "People" which contains more fantastic songs! My favorite of this album is : "If you go",

maybe you should listen it too...

  • Thanks, marion. Yes, know "If you go" well and have it on my favorites here at YouTube. Thanks for the rec!

  • Oh your welcome, it's nice to meet somebody who likes the Hothouse Flowers too! Because here in Holland none of my friends know them, ha ha! Have a nice day, bye!

  • thank you..the song of youth

  • Don't Go..Suzie:)...

  • silly girl.... wherever I go, I will never leave you.... Never!

  • cant wait to see these guys tonight its going to be awsome

  • great song - group later exposed as self-indulgent smuggies and everything bad about ireland; meanwhile "My Lovely Horse" bought back the high ground.

  • Hothouse Flowers are playing in McCormacks Balscadden Balbriggan Sat 11th July Doors 9:30pm Support by Soupstone.

  • Great band live. Leo Barnes the sax player (no longer with them) was a right twat though, i spoke to him and he was a pure cock.

  • this group have a song "the end of the road"??

Excuse me for my bad english..

  • Say the Flowers supporting Runrig on the banks of loch Lomond, mid summers day, 1991 (could be wrong about the year), standing ovation, well deserved., hope to hear from others who were there.

  • What a great song, seen these guys live in Derry 1988 or 89 ( memory going lol ) song as good now as it ever was, thanks for posting.

  • This takes me back to the 80's, barmy summer evening and carefree times of innocents, why do we have to grow up????

  • @phoenix1916 ~ I feel the same. The only time that I ever bought an album (cassette at the time!) from an unknown (to me) artist after hearing only one song was after I heard "Don't Go" way back when. It is fantastic to hear them again. Wha-? I was a TEENAGER back then?

  • @phoenix1916 Man, u're so awfully right; summer nights, cans of beer, my first car with the only decent thing being the cassette (!) stereo player; cause I bought it new lol. And.....the overall sensation that we would never grow up; that was for other people....

I still have their vinyl album. I remember my daughter asking, some years ago, what these "thin books" were on the shelf.... time did pass by :-)

  • @mininggeneral They cant take our memories!! : 0 )

  • @phoenix1916 you re absalutlie right sorry for my poor english.

  • Love this song! Always felt happy listening to this song. In the Night by Basia Bulat is another outstanding tune with a similar feel good factor.

  • Thank you for posting this, excellent song. Brings back memories, great times I've had.

  • What a classic song from a great Irish band.

  • Jerry Fehily (Drummer) - If only other musicians loved their art as much as he did. A pure gentleman & a great musician. Folks, it's not all about the money. No musician ever picked up & learned their instrument to make money........

  • what the hell are they singing?

  • Liam wrote this song for a friend who was dying (he said so on tv). Find the text at:

    lyrics hothouse flowers don't go!

  • This is the Eurovison video i think, hence all the different countries, ireland were hosting the Eurovison that year and this was the filler between the songs and voting, a lot of people thought this song won.

  • I remember this as the original video ( I allways wanted to dance in the snow like that). Doesn't matter, briljant song!

  • yeah was shown at euro vision, but wasn;t an entry, was a competition for irish bands to appear these guys won

  • There was an other video with this song, the quality was much better. Where did it go? This one hurts my ears. Great song though.

  • Hothouse Flowers have always been so refreshing in this over-commercialised age.

If you want music played with a genuine passion and love that can only come direct from the heart then this is the band for you!

If you like your idols to be manufactured and obsessed with celebrity status then stop reading and leave immediately.

You are definitely in the wrong place:-)
