Hi, I'm new to casting and lubing, I hope you can answer my question. My cast bullets, 358 158gn, have two grooves. the one near the base is a straight sided groove, but the one above is tapered along one edge, . It this groove also supposed to be filled, or is this a crimp groove? if i fill it with lube and crimp to it, would this be OK?
I do something similar to this. I put my wax in the first time, then when i pop the bullets out i put the wax back in, put the bullets in and throw it in the oven @ 250 until it melts. I just let it heat up with the oven and check it every few minutes. It's real convenient as the bullets just go into the holes from the previous session.
So if you lubricate here, how do you lubricate your bullets when you resize them? do you use the liquid lubricant when you run them thru your sizing dye? Thanks
Great video. I have moly grease of a good concentrated quality. I have used it for years, mixed with thick oil on my 1930 unlubricated British motorcycle primary chain. Would it be a good item to put in the bullet lube mix in place ot the STP. Alas the colour would be black. Thought I'd ask a question. Regards from the UK
Adding STP oil treatment: I Did some research on STP O T and found there is 60% mineral oil, and 10% zinc in it. Mineral oil is fine, but the zinc isn't at all good. That's one of the common dross materials casters want to scoop off. Why do you want that in the bullet lube? Maybe there's some reason, but it eludes me. All the pan lube vids have been super helpful regardless and I appreciate the onging efforts to help each other out and same money..... SD.
Really well done video. Thanks. Question: STP gas treatment, what does it do for the lube? I'm loading for 10mm cast bullets, about 1200fps. And should I size, lube, or lube and then size? Thanks!
hi great video . i hunt with a muzzle loader rilfe i cast my own 200gr bullets i use a lee mold why use a lube iv just been shooting them with out lube
great info.I am going with this one,out of all the others i've looked at.
a couple of questions?what is the pupose of the tea strainer? And.
can you explain if you lube before and after sizeing? Some have said they just lube once. Before sizeing.Seems that this wou;ld leave spots that the lube was scraped off during sizeing?
Very informative video. You've helped my process a lot. Thanks. One place where I improvised was, beeswax was a little pricey around here, whereas beeswax toilet rings are less than $2 each, so I sub'd 2 rings for 1 lb of beeswax. I know they have a little mineral oil in them, but it didn't seem to affect the mixture at all. All I know is, my bullets came out great, thanks to you. Keep up the good work!
well it's been 8 months or so and I can say that cleaning the bbl was much easier with this lube than the other store bought brands I've tried, and although since I'm not loading cartridges I do have to handle the bullets more and the lube does get soft in the summer, and difficult to handle. After sighting em in (Thompson maxi-hunter .50cal mold) they've continued to hit the target and not lead the bbl. Thanks again!
Hello again pat, I don't know if I did something wrong but I think my lube its a bit soft. I mean, I can remove the block of lube & bullets in one piece, but its kinda sticky for what I wanted, there's a way to make the formula a bit harder?
However, it works great on my pistol rounds. It's mainly to make less mess on my kitchen ;)
great... although for some reason my lube didn't "take" the color of the two red crayons...It looked red until it solidified and then went to a whitish color...don't know what i did wrong, used a double boiler setup too...oh well, Thank you for the family recipe!
Color ends up more pink than bright red. Did you use real crayola crayons? Don't sweat it, color should not be a problem though! Thanks for your comments.
i think it's because i used a different brand of paraffin wax...everything else is the same, oh well, hey about your bpcrstore in sf, can i walk in and take a look or is it online only?
I don't think I would. I would just use straight bee's wax or straight parrafin. Use a "pea" size piece for 10 lbs of hot lead and stir it in well, then skim off the dross. This will smoke and may flame up, so be ready and always be very carefull!
Use the lube over and over, very little is being used in the lube grooves. You should use the flexible pans to easily remove the block. Use the tea strainer so as to remove little bits of crud that may get into the lube. I shoot once a month and one batch lasts me well over a year. Thanks for your comments.
new to cast reloading so bear in mind. SO i made some of this formula, looks good and all, but are the lube rings on the bullet supposed to be completly filled? and on some of the bullets i have more on one side and not the other. what could i be doing wrong. another question: wont the was/lube build up in your barrel? stupid question seeing that you could melt it out i guess.
I would guess you may have a bullet block that has the holes very close together, try a block with more space between bullets. The grooves should all fill, but I do get a few in every batch without a small amount, I think this happens because of an air pocket. Use the hot formula right away, and let the wax harden 24 hours before you carefully push the bullet sraight out. The wax in the groove is fragile so handle carefully. Lube should not build up in barrel but lead will, so use it!
i did let them sit for 24 hours. i just did another batch before work tonight and spaced them out but im thinking that pushing them out the other way might be a trick to try also. i pour it right in when its nice and hot so not being hot enough isnt the problem. also, how do you get the lube out? with normal cleaning solvent?
I hope thing worked out for you. Some additional things to consider: 1)Room temperature bullets, 2)slight tapping on pan (don't tip bullets over though), 3) tappered bullets by all means push out the other direction, 4)Clean barrel as normal.
This is a lube for cast bullets from lead with lube grooves (depressed rings around base part of bullet could be 1 to 6 of these the lube grooves get filled with the wax formula.)
I'm pretty new to reloading. Do I need to lube store bought lead bullets? I haven't read anywhere that I do, and have fired some reloaded lead bullets that seem to work fine.
Simply put lube keeps cast off lead from acumulating in the barrel, so no lube means leading. The acumulation of lead will effect bullet accuracy. Lube is a soft wax like material that sits in the grooves of the cast lead bullet. You can purchase sized and lubed bullets, or purchase cast bullets and do this yourself.
Don't know, it might, but most people resize pistol bullets and or use gas checks. Now if you stay slow and have the correct size bullets you dont have to resize, but now you creat a problem if the cartridges are for use in an automatic, if they are too slow it won't eject.

How much did you wait before you can punch the bullts off the wax brick?
Is it too hard if you let it cool down over night to punch bullets out?
Can i replaceth vaseline wax with with vaseline oil (mineral oil)?

Do you re-size the bullets before or after lubing, or do you shoot your bullets without resizing?
Normally, I use the Lee Sizer Die Kit with Alox lube.
Thanks, great and informative video

whats the point for lubing a bullet?
elvemage00 2 years ago
It keeps the lead from building up in the gun.
mcali2 2 years ago
To stop it depositing lead in the gun's barrel which can reduce performace and cause corrosion.

If you need the formula harder, add some more beeswax to it until you get the viscosity you need.

Great video for those of us who don't own a "lubrasizer"...by the way is the STP oil treatment used more for coloring, or for the actual lube?
