  • What a horrid piece of journalism. So what if he's posh? Old-fashoined, conservative views are what Britain needs. Can people not see how destructive today's wishy-washy, muslim-respecting tripe is?

  • Guy's an idiot. A walking advertisement on the dangers of inbreeding.

  • Posh = out of touch. Most likely. There lies the problem, not that people are jealous of his wealth.

  • @khetti2006 Do you realise he was one of the strongest arguers for a EU referendum? Something that all 3 main parties officiously opposed. So don't call him out of touch, he's more in touch than the Labour pack, and most of the MPs in Parliament.

  • @mikeypinder Depends if you think we should be in the EU or not. Just because he argues that point of view doesn't mean he's in-touch. I'm on the fence about the EU, never really made up my mind 100%.

  • @khetti2006 I accept your point, I merely used that as an example because of the huge public support it received, with well over 100,000 signatures on the e-petitions website. Using that as evidence, this is the thing the public have cared about the most for several years. His views are completely in touch with the likely result of a public referendum (you might disagree there of course!). MPs should be the best, irrespective of background either way, too many average MPs in Parliament nowdays.

  • I find the labour supporter attitude of "class war" and total inverse snobbery makes them a total joke as a modern political party. I don't give a dam how rich or poor my local MP is or what they talk like. All I care about is how much sense they talk on the real issues that effect Britain's economy which is debt and Europe. Since labour are shite at both those issues I'm glad this guy got elected.

  • Most people are missing the point on here. He may be well educated but he is out of touch. Can he really understand the issues that face normal, working people? Who does he represent?

  • Seriously I think he is putting it on what a wanker.

  • @Sillysod I cannot believe you are characterizing those not from Eton as "Shameless styled". Etonians dominate Westminster, this report's message is just a call for better representation, something which is vital for a fair, working democracy. "Of the people, by the people, for the people." If going to Eton made you smarter, Parliament would be full of geniuses. Which it isn't.

  • 2:03 It looks to me as though you don't have much respect for "others you don't know about" either.

  • I would rather have someone running the country with COMMON SENSE than education. These toffee nosed so called "representatives" are out of touch with real issues in this country, dispite what their schooling says. I wouldnt care if the person who run our country was dressed like a chav, swore now and again and liked to take a few cans of beer to work for his late night parlimentary discussions as long as he took responsibility for the people.

  • Doesn't anyone understand that while a hugely priveleged background and outlook on life doesn't make you a worse person, it totally detaches you from the reality that everyone else has to face, and therefore makes you utterly useless at representing the people???

He believes in unchecked funding for the monarchy and sees the royal family as the saviors of Britain. Not a word about childcare for single mums or providing council houses...why does he qualify to represent at all?

  • He has fuck-all in common with anyone I know in Somerset.

  • old fashioned glorious countryside? ye because you own it you rich prick!!!!!

  • Inverse snobbery!

  • Well, he got in and that slimy Labour twat didn't, ha!

I liked the LD candidate, but only as a person, never a rep!

  • posh twat, all the ruling politicians are from the same old boys network they are best friends and just defend their class interest

  • Horrendous reporting. You can better me a moron in this country than a decent man.

  • LOL nobody discriminates the working-class more in Politics than Labour. The only reason they put of with Prescott is because he is a sell-out and too stupid to be seen as a threat to their Oxbridge Leftist elite club.

So what if this guy is posh? as long as he has no prejudices against people who are not wealthy or educated (like most champagne socialists such as mandelson does),then let the people judge him on his mert?

  • @LibertarianUK merit

  • I dont think just because he talks with a posh accent make him an intellectual, if you have seen his extraordinary rant he did recently in favor of keeping royal finances secret, you would no he's nothing but a privileged toff without a clue

  • The description shows whats wrong about Tories. the left are 'envious'... no were not, we just dont want upper class toffs who have dominated the people with no consent for centuries.

  • I'm very pleased Jacob is an MP. That Labour candidate was lame why should he get to discriminate against him because he has a posh background? Jacob won because he was the best candiate. Class based prejudice is so old and irrelevant. Jacob will be an asset to parliament. I like him because he's clearly not hiding who he is and has a personality. We obviously need intellegent people in parliament!

  • At least he is actually from the area he is representing. Most MPs are just special advisers parachuted in to a constituency they know nothing about so they can use it as their foothold in Westminster.

  • @DarrenACooper Ran out of room on my last comment but I also have to add this... we may never know if these Etonian charities were created out of guilt or true love for humanity. It may be a combination of both

  • @DarrenACooper . Yes, everybody should be free to choose the best education but only a handful of people have that privilege. The majority of people have no choice in the matter because of limited financial resources and have to stick the not so perfect government funded educated. Most people are good parents who will choose the best schools for their children if given the chance.

  • @DarrenACooper An Etonian education is bias at best. It is for the rich by the rich, therefore, all Etonian children will grow up having a bias perspective. Sadly, this is currently how the world is today, a perpetual economic state of greed. They will protect and sustain the interest of the rich. No Etonian graduate has ever proven to be the man of the people, whatsoever! A candidate with an elite education will not necessarily help the less well off, free higher education for all will help.

  • lol: 'you need to have respect when you talk about people who you don't know about'. now contrast this with his election campaign, run entirely on jokes about how posh his opponent is. yeah, really respectful

  • Etonians are in a world of their own. These people have NEVER experience any economic hardships so they can NEVER truly relate to those struggling just to survive. Fucking Toffs run for office because they have nothing better to do with their fortune.

  • Labour descriminating again!

  • @loveEUROPEhateEU

Eton didn't do much for you with that kinda spelling.

  • from the personality side of it id vote for moogs!!

shame he doesnt do his own party thing. leaving the cons behind him, especialy if they want to tell him what to do. might end up a UK ron paul. back to the good old english way

  • Isn't the reporter Katie Razzall, the daughter of Lord Razzall of the Lib Dems? So no biased agenda in this piece then!

  • what is an exclusive loo at claridges hotel?? is this on expenses?

  • It's an outrage that we have well educated people running the country, we need more 'Shameless' styled people in politics.

    This is such malicious broadcasting.

  • @Sillysod yes the people of shameless represent real people and how good decent and 'salt of the earth ' these types are

  • @chrisjoneschrisjones 'So to speak'

  • @Sillysod ....yes indeed

  • @Sillysod they didn't say anything that wasn't true, its not channel 4 or labors fault that this guy is an odious toff

  • @Sillysod

Education and the ability to govern are very different things. Being extremely eloquent and fluent in latin don't really count much towards ability to administrate. He stands in parliament to debate why the monarchy's finances shouldn't even be looked at because its rude. What on earth has this got to do with how people in Somerset have their bins collected or how their local NHS wards are run?

  • Yes, god forbid we elect articulate intellectuals to Westminster.

  • @roflcopter2006 being posh doenst make u articulate

  • @roflcopter2006 I don't like the guy very much, I saw him on question time and I think he is just another Thatcher Era Tory who will take the country back to the 80's. However I don't think that we should attack him purely on the posh front. It's more about whether he understands the people who need the most help in his constituency and No I don't think Rees-Mogg is going to stand up for the middle or working class in somerset, So far he's stood up for no one.
