I never saw what was wrong with this version. It's mellow and pleasant to listen to, but still has the same feeling as the original, as opposed to that horrid electric guitar version that sounded way to 90s
I was one of the few that liked this theme...it summed up the show perfectly during this time...depressing:(I did like the closing theme much better though:)
Apparently, Michael Laibson (GL's then-executive producer) said in an AOL chat (remember those?) that switching to this version of the theme was a "mistake" and that the 1991-96 version would be reinstated. He either lied or changed his mind, because this theme was replaced by an all-new electric-guitar version.
(I get these obscure tidbits from Google Groups. People wrote messages commenting and, more often than not, complaining about the theme changes when they happened.)
I have to admit, I was upset myself when they changed the theme to this AND the bad guitar theme...oh brother! LoL Too bad the original was NOT re-instated.
I do have one question, though: Did you tape this off of CBS? I have a recording of this opening (not the whole episode, just the opening and closing credits) with the animated CBS StereoSound logo superimposed on top.
My best estimates (based on Google Groups postings) are that this version of "Hold On to Love" debuted on Monday, June 3, 1996 and was replaced by the guitar (a.k.a. "bad '80s pop," at least to some people) version on Monday, July 8, 1996.
I have this on VHS in mono. I finally purchased a HI-FI stereo VCR, about 2 days too late to catch this, the best tune they ever had (at least while I was watching). The show was great then!
I loved this opening. So much better than today's and what a great cast back in 1996. Is the woman in the pink dress before Alan, Eleni played by Jennifer Roszell. I think she took over in 1995 after Melina Kanakaredes left.
How long was this Guiding Light theme version used for ?

The original is better, in my opinion. This theme has such a gorgeous melody, regardless of the version.

Thanks. I freakin' loved this version. The last note is a bit of overkill, though.

Is the woman besides Rebecca Budig and Robert Newman in the opening Toby Poser, who played Amanda Spaulding?

Yes. It sure is!

I don't remember that much of the jazz version, because it only lasted for about a month in a half, but it sounds very nice.

Wow, I'd forgotten about this version! Loved it. It didn't last long though.

Great clip. This version of the theme aired for a very short time, from June 3 to July 5, 1996.
