@ffe224 Just like with women, most people prefer blondes but I prefer brunette... Same with this car, I like it and you don’t. Personally I think it could have looked better, If it had supra like curves or if it was manned up a little. Also I don’t agree with it only having the 140BHP engine from the Celica when they could have offered the choice of the 190BHP 2ZZ engine also from the calica. It would have been easy for them to offer it as many people have performed the engine swaps already.
Wow a chick car? Not really, that's the Miata. I've had my 2002 Mr2 for three years now and love it. It gets great comments, is fun to DRIVE, (not cruise like the Miata), gets 38 mpg on the highway, and draws three things that begin with C regularly: chicks, comments and cop looks. Why Toyota dropped it...who knows, I put a luggage rack on it, strap a waterproof Samsonite on it and my wife and I travel all over New England in style....passing all those girls and old men in Miatas.
Out of all MR2 Spyders I've seen on the road and at the track, I've only seen 1 woman driver. The worst comment I get about the Spyder is from women: "what a cute car"! Not exactly what a man wants to hear! Especially when there are other car guys around! So what's a guy like me to do?.......... Add more horsepower! About 207 more horsepower! Now the women (the wife) are happy and I'm happy!
To add that amount of power must have cost you a fortune. I guess a 2zz engine, turbo, and all the other usual bits such as exhaust, intake etc... worth it if you can afford i bet.
Sounds like Tiff was in love with the "Spyder". I remember everyone considered this last gen MR2 to be a chick car. Men would rather be driving a Miata before getting caught dead in the MR2 Spyder.
@hulkhatepunybanner Everyone sais that about mine but it is quick and being a convertiable is good in the summer... well worth it, Im keeping mine the way it was built but with abit of modification the car can become pretty man'ly. Exhaust, body-kit etc...

agreed, i own a mkII and its the best god damn car i have ever been in. i love it and its definitely able to hold its own against a huge spectrum of different tuner cars out there.
It's not all about speed people! The MKII is the shit, bags of character, sexier to look at, it's more practical with a boot if you wanna throw that point in too. Just my personal opinion but I think the MKII is the best one.
Well i think they are both good... i gotta a MK3 but i am toying with the idea of buying a MK2 2.0 twin turbo as they are so cheap... just for playing with at weekends. depends on money as i think insurance would be a little OTT.
@AndysN20 go for the mk2 bro!!! they are soo effing awsome. i was never into them till my mate got one. we spend hours working on it! and you get ALOT of attention in them ^^ they drive like nobodys business too! go for it!

As far as Im aware there were subtle differences between the editions... I dont know if there was a sports edition, as they are all after all sports cars... However things to look out for are dual exhaust, leather, semi-automatic/manual... I would highly recommend a facelift model (2003 onwards) as older ones were known to have serious defects on the engine as I found out on my pre-facelift... You can read about it on the Toyota owners club.
Wow -thanks a lot for this. That would explain whay *all* the MR-S's for sale are 2001 or older, and also why the prices are so cheap. There's not a single 2003 or later model on the market :-(
Ye, I got a refund on my MR2 (pre facelift).. I got a newer one and its been no trouble.. looking back, I could have re-negotiated for old one and got it cheap, it did drive well despite it drinking oil..
I dont want to put you off the older ones as they dont all go bad. as you say they are cheap so that car you have seen might be worth looking at.. If its a dealer then you should get a warranty with the car anyway. If you buy it look out for mass oil consumption in the engine..
Quite simply this is the best bang for buck drive out there. Lower insurance group, higher mpg, cheap maintenance, and the handling outclasses the other 2 in the price bracket (mx5, mgf), and gives more expensive varieties a good run for their money on tough country roads which is where i like to let it rip. It is not a street/drag racer, you'll get laughed out the park, but if you want a unique drivers car and money is an issue, this is as good as it gets. A little aesthetic modding goes far
in the fanny magnet stakes (back end is too cute and girly for me so a dual exhaust and spoiler have revamped it in my eyes), forget modding under the hood, the gains are minimal especially if you compare it to any half decent stock hot hatch, id recommend a shortshifter, cleaning out the maf & throttle body, and resetting the ecu as the initial quick cheap options that go a long way to improving response. As to the engine issue, no matter how good a deal you see do NOT buy a pre-facelift
(pre-2003) model. The only way round this is to read up on pre-cat problems and have a look inside to check their condition which most sellers wont be too comfortable with, 2003+ models have no major problems. Try to get one with hardtop, ac, leather seats options and make sure to check the soft top if its packed away for warping or general damage.
The Mk2 was a piece of shite in every sense of the word. The only thing it had was good looks, which explains why "boy raceR" morons like it. despite having a much bigger engine than the MK1 & MK3, it huffs and puffs like an old dog. Even the turbo doesn't do much except cause it to waste gasoline like a rotary rx7 turbo. It's not fast straight, it's not fast on turns, it's not fun to drive, it sounds like shite, and best of all, it likes to over-steer into trees. I hope #4 will not be like mk2.
NECTG16, I do not agree with your synopsis of the mk2 mr2, other than that it looks good. The turbo does not waste petrol. I can floor mine often and almost always return higher than the 20mpg city driving rating. I enjoy driving mine, I enjoy the sound (even with my stock exhaust), and as long as the driver doesn't drive like an idiot, the car will not over-steer into trees.
You can enjoy your car, it is a nice car, but compared to what it was originally designed for, it failed horrible. (and should of been renamed a different model). compared to 4agze it sounds like a diesel truck and is just as wasteful (despite being more modern). it is not comfortable at all with bad visibility, despite being bigger. and most of these cars are not being driven for 2 reasons, not age. either owner spined it into a tree, or he got tired of doing repairs with that tiny bonnet.
MK2 is still the best especially if your moddng the car. They have 200hp in the stock US version. Just slap in a 245hp JDM 1994+ then pick up a boost controller to crank the boost. Nothing custom all fits like original. Also 1ZZ is not as reliable everyone knows they burn oil after 100,000km right. 3sgte is a good solid engine 1zzfe is an econo junk box mover.
I know what you are saying... I had a 2000 reg MR2 and the engine in that was knackered, it rattled and used a lot of oil... apparently there was a problem with the earlier ones... So I got a younger one that runs ok... think I get an S2000 next time.
hey this is a episode of fifth gear because of that guy. jermy clarkson is the one from top gear. i think the title of the video is wrong. correct me if im wrong.
You are wrong pal... you see 'that guy' is tiff needell and he used to work on top gear... the show was then scrapped and reborn with Jeremy Clarkson and co... its all on Wikipedia.
I just got one last week... had to go back to the dealers because one of the new tires was slowly going down... but my experiance so far is, its a brill little car.
Two years ago I bought a pristine 2002 MR2 smt with less than 12,000 miles on it for less than $15,000. The only thing I had buy since then was a new battery. It's fun to drive, but the exhaust is too quiet in my opinion. If I loaf on the freeway it gets over 45 mpg!
Ye, its a nice little car... Im gonna start looking for one in the next three months... I believe the exhaust is quiet because of something to do with the style of engine (VVTI)... there are some good aftermarket exhausts like team moon.... some videos of team moon exhausts on YouTube if youre interested....
Yes, I would be interested, thanks. What I would like to find is a good MR2 enthusiast website with lots of technical stuff like the Honda tuner boards.
Its top gear at 0.03 you will see the name top gear... you see Tiff Needell used to produce top gear and later they scrapped the show.... It was then re-launched with Jeremy Clarkson and co. Tiff moved over to fifth gear.
JDM/US version can get 2L turbo-charged 220hp or 240hp. Read it in wikipedia, and source from IGN reviews on GT4 which can't be fake. I'll shut up from here coz I remember I used to drive 280PS ver. in GT series but I can't find any source
Ye, I Wikipediad it, and they are rare editions are they not.... I believe there was the V6 version of the MK3 also a racing edition (on Wikipedia).... maybe they have around those sort of power outputs.... but I was referring to the regular MK2 vs. regular MK3
Anyway this aint Japan... Im not denying that the MR2 turbo has 245hp my point is that the normal/most common mr2 (where I live is 2.0 non turbo @ 168hp) is not as fast as the MK3....
Yea I just dislike the latest "mr2". You know what they call it in Japan? The MR-S because its a castrated version of the Mister 2 and now its just a Misses.....
the mk2 is the ultimate MR2 its just awesome i mean who needs an interior? not me! a car of that calibre is for real driving not pussy footing about in the street strip it down slightly tune it and you have a fucking beast
Because being green has made them rich and successful, and makes the company look good in the eyes of the worlds government. they have sold there soul to the green party.
I want one two... getting it sometime this year, cant wait... but with the credit crunch and all cars are going cheap anyway. Car-dealers will bend over backwards to sell you one(knock loads of the list price).
ye, i think they can go for less that £3500 but Im really after a facelift model, I can just scrape enough cash for a good 03/53 but Im waiting for insurance reasons (im only 20).
Me? If I had to choose between the two... Well is the MR2 a re-bored 2.2 turbo?
I think the MR2 MKII would be more reliable. The Mazdas rotary engine wont like short runs and I believe they need rebuilding within 100K miles. What about the ultimate.... the Supra/ S2000.
Well I wasn't talking theoretical I have a choice between a stock second gen mr2 turbo and a stock third gen rx7, both the same price. Just wondering what people think. But between supra and s2000 Id have to choose the Supra, but only because I couldn't stand driving a honda....
I wasent talking theoretical. Tho the mazda is a nice car id choose the MR2 because it should be more reliable than the mazda, but thats just my opinion.
Nah, they already were low in value. They didn't keep much value, since they didn't sell too many of them. The 8-9 grand for one is actually a good price for one with under 50,000 miles. Performance for these cars is unreal, I don't care what anyone says. It weighs a couple hundred pounds less than a Miata, looks better, and at 2150lbs and 12 PSI, you can get close to 250 whp and turn it into a beast. It doesn't take much horsepower to push 2100lbs.
Yeah, though the Mazdaspeed MX-5 is faster, its boosted and that came out in like 06 or 07 or something. For the MR-2's entire run, it kicked the Miata's ass. Don't get me wrong, I love Mazdas but...nope, no contest.
I want an MR-2 Spyder to swap a 2zzge into and eventually go turbo, prolly.
The 2zz is a common swap. It uses all but one of the same mounts, all but two of the same harness plugs, the same radiator, etc. The biggest thing is the ECU, which would need to be aftermarket anyway. The hardest part is finding the engine and mounting the throttle body. Over at mr2(dot)com there is a guide on it. Thats around 190bhp right there. Obviously new exhaust will be needed, but that isn't a bad thing. Then of course turbo. I expect at least 300whp or more at around 10-12 PSI. :)
Well you sure know what youre talking about.... i thaught the wheels (with a thicker diameter) would be a good idea to help put the extra power down...
Good luck with the engine swap... let us know how it goes.
Yeah, bigger wheels will help put power down. In a car like this, it's almost a necessity. I would suggest 19x9.5s in the back if possible. The car doesn't weight much, and the fenders and stuff are all steel. I'd like to mold a fiberglass set.
it is a shoe. you have to be a midget to fit in one, and the only really good thing about it is that it was made by toyota. would you still like it if it had a gm badge?
I'm 6foot tall and I fit in one fine. And yes, I would drive one if it had a GM badge on it. I actually really like the Saturn Sky. But it's too heavy for a roadster.
It's an awesomely light car with tons of power potential. There's a video on Youtube of an MR2 with the Celica 2ZZ beating an S2000 with Intake/Exhaust mods. Do you know why? The S2000 weighs a lot more. A 2ZZ swapped MR2 Spyder would walk a Boxter, and smoke a 3100lb BMW Z-4. 1,000 lbs makes a big difference, even with an I6.
My point is that a simple 2zz swap from a stock 7g Celica will turn it into a mean machine. It's not really much of a modification if you are using an engine that, frankly, should have been in there to begin with. Regardless, for half the money or less, you can have a car that beats all 3 of those.
nope not anymore...they scrapped the supra project and they dont know when they will consider putting th lexus lf a supercar in production anymore. the way the economy is toyota is focus on improving what they have now so they dont loose any profits.
Oh... maybe when the economy picks up then. But then, a MR2 is a cheap sports car, maybe thats what the world needs right now... why did Toyota scrap the sports range in the first place? The supra MR2 and celica were all brill.
As for the exhaust note I am hoping to get one with a factory fit dual TTE sports exhaust. But they too are expensive. Depends on my finances if I can afford one.
But air induction should help even if I cant afford a dual exhaust. Thanks again for the advice.
You can actually replace the whole engine/drivetrain with the 2zz out of the elise! what you end up with is identical power and a super-model's weight difference between the 2 (the mr2 is approx 90lbs heavier)
Can you really... Or if youre not so adventurous you can turbo charge it. Toyota team Europe (TTE) make the turbos (+ other tuning components). power increases as follows.... crazy

A little aesthetic modding goes far
vadertuber 2 years ago
in the fanny magnet stakes (back end is too cute and girly for me so a dual exhaust and spoiler have revamped it in my eyes), forget modding under the hood, the gains are minimal especially if you compare it to any half decent stock hot hatch, id recommend a shortshifter, cleaning out the maf & throttle body, and resetting the ecu as the initial quick cheap options that go a long way to improving response. As to the engine issue, no matter how good a deal you see do NOT buy a pre-facelift
vadertuber 2 years ago

NECTG16 2 years ago
NECTG16, I do not agree with your synopsis of the mk2 mr2, other than that it looks good. The turbo does not waste petrol. I can floor mine often and almost always return higher than the 20mpg city driving rating. I enjoy driving mine, I enjoy the sound (even with my stock exhaust), and as long as the driver doesn't drive like an idiot, the car will not over-steer into trees.
rjkStudios 2 years ago
You can enjoy your car, it is a nice car, but compared to what it was originally designed for, it failed horrible. (and should of been renamed a different model). compared to 4agze it sounds like a diesel truck and is just as wasteful (despite being more modern). it is not comfortable at all with bad visibility, despite being bigger. and most of these cars are not being driven for 2 reasons, not age. either owner spined it into a tree, or he got tired of doing repairs with that tiny bonnet.

why tiff got replaced by clarkson? i enjoy tiff's commentory hes really into detail more facts and professional
nico74321 2 years ago
MK2 is still the best especially if your moddng the car. They have 200hp in the stock US version. Just slap in a 245hp JDM 1994+ then pick up a boost controller to crank the boost. Nothing custom all fits like original. Also 1ZZ is not as reliable everyone knows they burn oil after 100,000km right. 3sgte is a good solid engine 1zzfe is an econo junk box mover.
Flykickuintheleftnut 2 years ago

Two years ago I bought a pristine 2002 MR2 smt with less than 12,000 miles on it for less than $15,000. The only thing I had buy since then was a new battery. It's fun to drive, but the exhaust is too quiet in my opinion. If I loaf on the freeway it gets over 45 mpg!
sunnyallthetime 2 years ago 6
Ye, its a nice little car... Im gonna start looking for one in the next three months... I believe the exhaust is quiet because of something to do with the style of engine (VVTI)... there are some good aftermarket exhausts like team moon.... some videos of team moon exhausts on YouTube if youre interested....
AndysN20 2 years ago
Yes, I would be interested, thanks. What I would like to find is a good MR2 enthusiast website with lots of technical stuff like the Honda tuner boards.

Its top gear at 0.03 you will see the name top gear... you see Tiff Needell used to produce top gear and later they scrapped the show.... It was then re-launched with Jeremy Clarkson and co. Tiff moved over to fifth gear.

I think the PROPER MR2 is always the best, I don't understand why toyota is going to the less perfopmance route.
TangoR34 2 years ago
by PROPER MR2, you mean the Mk1 and MK2..... because the Mk3 would kick the fuck out of both of them because its light as hell.
AndysN20 2 years ago
But I don't see how the Mk3 can beat the Mk2 when it has 2L 245hp compared to 140hp with only 300kg difference.
TangoR34 2 years ago
Where'd you get 245BHP from? I'd like to know because my understanding is tht MK2 has 2L 168BHP... or are you talking about a custom/rare version...
AndysN20 2 years ago
JDM/US version can get 2L turbo-charged 220hp or 240hp. Read it in wikipedia, and source from IGN reviews on GT4 which can't be fake. I'll shut up from here coz I remember I used to drive 280PS ver. in GT series but I can't find any source
TangoR34 2 years ago
Ye, I Wikipediad it, and they are rare editions are they not.... I believe there was the V6 version of the MK3 also a racing edition (on Wikipedia).... maybe they have around those sort of power outputs.... but I was referring to the regular MK2 vs. regular MK3
AndysN20 2 years ago
You are a fucking idiot. In Japan the standard MR2 turbo had 245hp. I should know I own a JDM MR2 MK2.....
fatoni698 2 years ago
Really.... aggressive basted.
Anyway this aint Japan... Im not denying that the MR2 turbo has 245hp my point is that the normal/most common mr2 (where I live is 2.0 non turbo @ 168hp) is not as fast as the MK3....
AndysN20 2 years ago
Yea I just dislike the latest "mr2". You know what they call it in Japan? The MR-S because its a castrated version of the Mister 2 and now its just a Misses.....
fatoni698 2 years ago
the mk2 is the ultimate MR2 its just awesome i mean who needs an interior? not me! a car of that calibre is for real driving not pussy footing about in the street strip it down slightly tune it and you have a fucking beast

I want one two... getting it sometime this year, cant wait... but with the credit crunch and all cars are going cheap anyway. Car-dealers will bend over backwards to sell you one(knock loads of the list price).
AndysN20 3 years ago
i seen a few 4 around £3500!
PeakPhoneTrading 3 years ago
ye, i think they can go for less that £3500 but Im really after a facelift model, I can just scrape enough cash for a good 03/53 but Im waiting for insurance reasons (im only 20).
AndysN20 3 years ago
If you had a choice between an mr2 turbo (1991) or a twin turbo rx7 (1992), both the same price, which would you buy?
fatoni698 3 years ago
AndysN20 3 years ago
Well I wasn't talking theoretical I have a choice between a stock second gen mr2 turbo and a stock third gen rx7, both the same price. Just wondering what people think. But between supra and s2000 Id have to choose the Supra, but only because I couldn't stand driving a honda....
fatoni698 3 years ago
I wasent talking theoretical. Tho the mazda is a nice car id choose the MR2 because it should be more reliable than the mazda, but thats just my opinion.
AndysN20 3 years ago
They're so cheap now, 8-9g
Cordius 2 years ago
Ye 8-9g in dollars... we have the credit crunch to thank for that...
AndysN20 2 years ago
Nah, they already were low in value. They didn't keep much value, since they didn't sell too many of them. The 8-9 grand for one is actually a good price for one with under 50,000 miles. Performance for these cars is unreal, I don't care what anyone says. It weighs a couple hundred pounds less than a Miata, looks better, and at 2150lbs and 12 PSI, you can get close to 250 whp and turn it into a beast. It doesn't take much horsepower to push 2100lbs.
Cordius 2 years ago
Ye, they are cheap, I plan on getting one this summer... well providing I dont do anything crazy like writing off my current car LOL.
In the UK they are like £5000 for a good 2004 reg...
As for the MX-5 (Miata). I totally agree not only is the MR2 faster, better looking but its also a real sports car, if you know what I mean.
AndysN20 2 years ago
Yeah, though the Mazdaspeed MX-5 is faster, its boosted and that came out in like 06 or 07 or something. For the MR-2's entire run, it kicked the Miata's ass. Don't get me wrong, I love Mazdas but...nope, no contest.
I want an MR-2 Spyder to swap a 2zzge into and eventually go turbo, prolly.
Cordius 2 years ago
2zzge and turbo thats some extreme stuff. The 2zzge is the TRD engine.
Is it a 2litre? should be about what 200BHP-ish + a turbo youre talking about 240BHP...
AndysN20 2 years ago
The 2zz is a common swap. It uses all but one of the same mounts, all but two of the same harness plugs, the same radiator, etc. The biggest thing is the ECU, which would need to be aftermarket anyway. The hardest part is finding the engine and mounting the throttle body. Over at mr2(dot)com there is a guide on it. Thats around 190bhp right there. Obviously new exhaust will be needed, but that isn't a bad thing. Then of course turbo. I expect at least 300whp or more at around 10-12 PSI. :)
Cordius 2 years ago
I have heard of the 2zz engine swap before...
Then of course youll have the necessery extras to uprate that comes with more power. brakes, intake, wheel's ect... cost a fortune...
AndysN20 2 years ago
Well you sure know what youre talking about.... i thaught the wheels (with a thicker diameter) would be a good idea to help put the extra power down...
Good luck with the engine swap... let us know how it goes.
AndysN20 2 years ago
Yeah, bigger wheels will help put power down. In a car like this, it's almost a necessity. I would suggest 19x9.5s in the back if possible. The car doesn't weight much, and the fenders and stuff are all steel. I'd like to mold a fiberglass set.
Cordius 2 years ago
Ye, you can buy some good body kits for the MR2/MRS. Some look better than the origional body.

if you want a useless shoe of a car pick the mr-s spider.....
red912e 3 years ago
This car is built exactly for what buyers would get it for. A lightweight car with awesome handling. If you want a bunch of room, get a 4 door.
mrhiguy 3 years ago 3
so then whats a bmw z-4 honda s2000 porsche boxter etc. for?.....the car is a shoe and the older ones were wayyyyyyyyyyyy better.
red912e 3 years ago
Yeah those other cars were about 10k more. You're comparing a cheap roadster to high priced vehicles. And the car is a car, not a shoe.
mrhiguy 3 years ago
it is a shoe. you have to be a midget to fit in one, and the only really good thing about it is that it was made by toyota. would you still like it if it had a gm badge?
red912e 3 years ago
I'm 6foot tall and I fit in one fine. And yes, I would drive one if it had a GM badge on it. I actually really like the Saturn Sky. But it's too heavy for a roadster.
mrhiguy 3 years ago 4
It's an awesomely light car with tons of power potential. There's a video on Youtube of an MR2 with the Celica 2ZZ beating an S2000 with Intake/Exhaust mods. Do you know why? The S2000 weighs a lot more. A 2ZZ swapped MR2 Spyder would walk a Boxter, and smoke a 3100lb BMW Z-4. 1,000 lbs makes a big difference, even with an I6.
Cordius 2 years ago 2
you can mod anything to beat a stock bmw or porsche, whats your point?
red912e 2 years ago 2
My point is that a simple 2zz swap from a stock 7g Celica will turn it into a mean machine. It's not really much of a modification if you are using an engine that, frankly, should have been in there to begin with. Regardless, for half the money or less, you can have a car that beats all 3 of those.

Any news on a new MR2? i hope they release a new one...

i wish the way the economy is toyota cant really do anything.
dukviper90 3 years ago
Maybe. I heard that there is a new supra only its gonna be badged Lexus, so maybe a new MR2...
87WTF 3 years ago
nope not anymore...they scrapped the supra project and they dont know when they will consider putting th lexus lf a supercar in production anymore. the way the economy is toyota is focus on improving what they have now so they dont loose any profits.
dukviper90 3 years ago
Oh... maybe when the economy picks up then. But then, a MR2 is a cheap sports car, maybe thats what the world needs right now... why did Toyota scrap the sports range in the first place? The supra MR2 and celica were all brill.
87WTF 3 years ago
Im planning on getting an mr2 convertible soon, but I have one question. What are they like on the motorway?
I'm guessing they will be noisy with the top up and windy with the top down.
Does anybody know?
Andysw88 3 years ago
one would expect that, no?
i've been in one before, and its not too terrible.
senioryearleo 3 years ago
Yes, i would expect it... but is it bad enough to buy a replacement matel roof? cos they are expensiph.
Andysw88 3 years ago
not really.
a plus of keeping the roof down is that you can hear the exhaust if you listen a bit. The exhaust tone is a bit quiet.
senioryearleo 3 years ago
Thank you for the advice.
As for the exhaust note I am hoping to get one with a factory fit dual TTE sports exhaust. But they too are expensive. Depends on my finances if I can afford one.
But air induction should help even if I cant afford a dual exhaust. Thanks again for the advice.
Andysw88 3 years ago

ye... but Im saving up for the car and I can only just afford that, a good 2004 reg is like £7,000. (+ ill have a nice big fat £100,000 morgage soon)

i just got the gen before it a couple days ago. turbo those things and the literally fly. a cheap Elise bascily
terrancoleman 3 years ago
You can actually replace the whole engine/drivetrain with the 2zz out of the elise! what you end up with is identical power and a super-model's weight difference between the 2 (the mr2 is approx 90lbs heavier)
mysaabisfaster 3 years ago
for clarification i was referring to the MK3
mysaabisfaster 3 years ago
Can you really... Or if youre not so adventurous you can turbo charge it. Toyota team Europe (TTE) make the turbos (+ other tuning components). power increases as follows.... crazy
Power increase from 140 PS
up to 184 PS
Torque improvement from
170 Nm @ 4200 min-1
to 255 Nm @ 3500 min-1
