  • This was a new thing to me :)

  • hey eric my dodge ram front lower ball joints are not servicable ones, but could i use same technic to fill the chasis grease up in rubber housing by porking a small hole?

  • @mrblockboii They actually make an attachment for grease guns that have a needle that you can do that very thing with. It's kind of a 2 edged sword however because once you poke the hole other junk can get in as well and the boot may start to rip where you put the grease in.

  • Cool post, thanks for the info, I've got a '64 Corvair Convertible that now needs new ball joints because they were never serviced.

  • @chewiebaby Yea that sucks. Thanks for the comment.

  • What kind of grease do u use when performing this job?

  • @380gb Just an off the shelf one, it doesn't need to be fancy.

  • most duralast parts from autozone still have the fittings

  • HE IS FUCKING COOL

  • ur cool

  • @AdOYOO So are you.

  • You are probably the only mechanic left who actually, still greases cars. My neighbor's car was squeaking, creaking, and I could hear it from a half a block away. I asked them about it, and they said they were told those noises are normal in older cars... I asked to take a look and found those Zerk fittings totally rusted over having probably never been re-greased in 140,000 miles... I shot 3 pumps of grease in ALL of them & now the car is quiet. :-)

  • @NETWizzJbirk Unfortunately your right I am in the minority when it comes to lubricating those things. Thanks for the comment.

  • How did I miss this video lol?, anyway the one handed trigger grease gun with atleast a 4 ft hose variety are my favorite.

  • @Begbucks A nice tool to use to be sure. Thanks for the comment.

  • I just watched a channle u asked me the viewer to watch (roadragecustoms) he put a car battery in his kid's hot wheels..it was not a dry cell battery kid's could have gotten hurt..I told him in a post but he may not care..I did not flag him I did say I would tell u about it.because u like his channle..eric I like ur channle but the roadrage guy should not do that...thank's eric I know u will understand

  • The info was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Eric!

  • @lngtrman I'm happy to be of service, thanks for the comment.

  • hi eric.my question has nothing to do with chassis lubrication.could you post a vid on how to recharge an AC system. I hav e a 2000 chevy malibu. found a fitting with a blue cap on it and figured that is where refrigerant goes but the can of r 134a will not fit on to it

  • @smithdsmit I actually stay away form that at the moment because AC diagnosis involves much more than just recharging the system and in some states you need a special license to handle refrigerant.

  • Oh and what type of grease do i buy for the balls joints, and all the other parts like the u-joints.

Does the steering stabilizer need to be greased or is that thing like a shock absorber

  • @1ownjoo2 There are a few different types but mostly it's axle grease that you buy in a tube. You don't grease the stabilizer but replace it if it starts to leak.

  • Question, i dont think my 98 Jeep Grand 5.9 needs to be lubed because when i look underneeth i see the red grease remains on the tip of those fittings you were talkin about. So i think the dealership i bought it from did that. (Only driven 4k miles since i got it)

However i do know our 1998 4.0 Grand cherokee has never had its balljoints and such greased. Never. It has 170k on it. Should i give this a try ? How much are these grease guns ?

  • @1ownjoo2 I would give it a try, grease guns are relatively inexpensive depending on where you get them.

  • i have a 96 blazer s10, are there zerk fittings on that? if not is there still a way to grease the joints? im getting a lot of creaking and squeaking when i turn or go over a bump

  • @littlejohnbitch The best way to find out is to look. There are needle attachments for grease guns that you can use on non-servicalbe joints but you have to damage the boot to use them, I've had mixed success using these.

  • Thanks, Eric! It's been a long time since high school Auto Tech and I'd forgotten how to do this!

  • @Whammytap I did it just yesterday. These days I don't see too many fittings that I can lube but I get excited when I do. Thanks for the comment.

  • eric ive got a civic 98, im not sure but last time i checked i couldnt find any zerk fittings. do you know if these cars dont come servicable? ive seen so many of these hondas with horrible squealing suspension, i wanna take care of mine. if they dont have zerks is it pretty easy to install these fittings on nessary areas. how, just drill small hole- than drill in zerk? let me know

  • @eric31291 Stop looking cause you won't find any. Honestly there are very few vehicles that have come out in the past 20 years that even have the fittings.

  • Hi I just tried to pack grease into my toyota p/u by attaching the gun to the zerk fitting, but grease wouldn't go into the fitting, but came out the sides. This happened on every fitting I tried. What am I doing wrong?!? Using the wrong grease type? I'm really stumped, but it's probably something very simple. Help! My truck is the loudest, squeakiest vehicle I've ever heard!!!

  • @dal2888859 Sometimes, especially if they haven't been greased in a while the ball at the end of the fitting will stick. I usually take my pocket screwdriver and push the ball down a couple of times to free it up in those instances.

  • @EricTheCarGuy you need to push the nozzle onto the zerk until it pops into place

  • my car is making a grinding noise when it goes over bumps is that cause it needs to be grease ?

  • @George38998 It might be past that really. I'd be looking at the ball joints to see if they are loose first. If they are loose replace them but if you don't find any loose parts lube them up and see if that fixes it.

  • Hey when I put grease in there, when it was full, a little nipple popped out, and grease came out. Is that like a safety valve type of thing, so you don't split the boot from too much grease ? and I can't push the nipple back in either.

  • @ICUC007 I think your right, part of doing this job is purging the old grease, dirt, and moisture out. I wouldn't worry about pushing the 'nipple' back in.

  • does grease go bad (in the gun) how long does it last for?

  • @Stylefree83 It takes a very long time but it will dry out eventually.

  • does this apply to hondas? i always see "lubricate chassis" on those services brochures at the dealerships... but when i get a invoice from them... never mentions anything about lubricating anything?

    thanks!

  • @diulaylomochohai In fact no, Honda's use non-servicable parts stock so there are no fittings to lubricate. In fact most vehicles these days are non-servicable so it's not common to be able to lubricate a chassis like I show here.

  • I never saw a pneumaticy one. who makes newmaticY.?

    Oh, NewMaticKey, of course.

OMG I haven't had or done a lube job in Ages.

All my boots are SHOT, and no replacements available.

    What am I gonna Do?

  • @ICUC007 Those parts are non-servicable these days unfortunately if the boots are gone then you need to replace the parts.

  • I never saw a pneumaticy one. who makes newmaticY

  • @ICUC007 pneumatic, and yes they are out there

  • @Stylefree83 was a Joke

  • I never saw a pneumaticy one

  • hey how would you service a honda civic 2001 i couldnt find any fittings?

  • @dre1162 You don't, they are non-servicable, you replace them when they wear out or break.

  • Nipple

  • I wish you would have addressed when it doesn't work like is happening to me right now. When to have to replace a zerk fitting and how. When I pump the grease it comes out the release valve on the gun and it not going into the zerk fitting.

  • @TheRiverMiss That does happen sometimes but not that often. Sorry I didn't cover it though as that would have been a good thing to cover in this video.

  • Would it be possible to drill a hole on ball joints and install a zerk fitting to make it serviceable?

  • @SanFranWay Possible yes, would I? No.

  • "NIPPLE" is the word your after, dont be shy!!!!!!!!!

  • @mgfdh I can see by your avatar that you have no trouble with the word. If I'm honest I was just having a "senior moment" during shooting, I left it in because I thought it was funny.

  • @EricTheCarGuy yes man that was funny

  • you should label a series quick tips

  • @ncktbs I have and this one is in it.

  • Part 2 of 2---Audience: "IT'S TOOL TIME!" Only your car babe could say: "It's EricTheCarGuy Time!! " Your followers will go bonkers!!! You'll see. You'll thank me someday for this solid advice. Besides, it will fill the gap for more nipples, brought to us by ETCG.

    the G-man

  • @TheBeachbum90210 I would indeed thank you for suggesting it as well as the success from the suggestion if I could make that work. Thing is I'm more interested in showing how to fix cars in my videos and I feel it would be too much of a distraction not only for me but the viewers. I will admit that I would very much enjoy the audition process for the next co-host of ETCG.....

  • Yeah you are absolutely right Eric--there just aren't enough zerk fittings OR stuff with NIPPLES around anymore like there was once...sigh...I miss all the nipples in my younger days... l still BELIEVE you need to consider GETTING a car BABE ASSISTANT in your vidz - Like Tim Allen had on his show "Home Improvement" with Heidi who would always start with: "What Time is it?" PART 1 of 2 cont.

  • Nice

  • Grease my what??

  • I've got 2003 nissan pathfinder which has one slip yoke to lubricate.

How much grease can I pump in? Is it possible that I damage something with too much grease?

  • @Vanuatoo Yes you can use too much but I believe it will cause more of a mess than damage. You just need a couple of good pumps on the gun and you should be fine. You may even see it start to come out, when it does you are done.

  • It's too bad everything is changing, grease nipples are awesome for long term part usage, I'm not a big fan of non-serviceable parts. I guess that vehicles are changing with the times and in this day and age people are not as willing to do their own work on their vehicles and so the non serviceable parts are more popular.

  • @TNT66613 Non-serviceable parts are cheeper to make and maintain. I too am a fan of something I can service however.

  • @TNT66613

There's two things that kill cars; mileage and time. Mileage wears any surface where metal runs against metal and accelerates the break down of materials via heating them. Time rots gaskets, glues and plastics.

If you build it invulnerable, it'll last forever but you'll get crappy mileage (120-140K) out of it because of less materials selection. If you build it cheap, you get great mileage (200+K) but it doesn't last more than a decade before everything goes.

  • What type of grease do you use?

  • @mazzmari To be honest I just use what the parts store had in stock. I've had a few questions on this however so I might do a follow-up video going over grease and how to load the gun.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Sounds like a good video.

  • Great video Eric, Thanks

  • I thought they were called Zerk Nipples...

"First vee attach de stick do ze zurk neepool, vesh, and zen ve pump, ooh, pump eet full of greeese unteel eet comes oot de od'er eend. Mmm, neepoool. PPPPTH, SMACK, PPPPTH, SMACK, PPPPTH...OOH all doone'!"

    ...

"Now wee spray dee hairspray into de tire and den vee position de hub leek so, den ve get dis lighter see and *BANG, POP* all done!"

I guess I earned a degree in redneck engineerin'.....

  • @bobinator50000 Best comment of the day.

  • Great video Eric, but I believe most have trouble loading a grease gun Properly, weather it be with a cartridge or by bulk!

  • @mrexecutive1 That sounds like a follow up video to this one.

  • This is a bit off topic but I thought I'd share. I'm currently fixing up a riding lawn mower and I thought it would be good to lubricate everything with fresh grease. Well, too bad I didn't read the manual before doing this job because it specifically states to NOT grease the spindles on the mower deck, because the zerks are only used at the factory. And I think I broke one of the seals when I tried greasing it up. Hopefully the mower won't break on me, a new spindle is like $60.. :(

  • @mrjost55 Interesting point, thanks for the comment.

  • LOL! I like how you didnt wanna say nipples! ahahah

  • You had better think of another name for ball joints.

  • @sirjimis I didn't come up with it, some engineer did. It does describe it's function however.

  • That truck looks familur. Is it that 2002 GMC Sonoma w/71k miles? Also Zurk/Greese fitting/nipple I think its all the same. I think its given a different name depending on where you live such as a forklift in California is called a Hi Lo in Michigan or even a Tow motor in parts of the deep south. Beats calling it a thinggie or what-cha-ma-call-it. Lmao.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Good eye. Yes, a part by any other name would still smell like metal.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Good eye. Yes, a part by any other name would still smell like metal.

  • The cost of a grease gun and ammo is less than one worn front end part, especially a ball joint. Some of the heavier duty trucks and vans still have them OE. I drove a 2006 Ford E Series for work and it had zerk fittings. As always Eric, the basics are the most important and I applaud that. Thanks.

  • @fixinggrace Thanks for your comment. I was surprised to find them on this 2002 and was happy to make the video as a result since I just don't see too many serviceable parts any more.

  • Nice vid, but it brings back bad memories of having to service triaxle dumptrucks, lol on a car its a nice an easy 15 minute job with about 6 fittings....... not on a rig.... it becomes quite a choir

  • @croom9 Yes indeed that would be a chore but it makes my point that if something is serviceable and maintained as it should be it will last quite a long time, longer than non-serviceable parts in my opinion. Dump trucks are expensive and repairing them even more so.

  • Wow that ball joint was original equipment it's riveted on.

Good thing it is lubable it's real fun drilling those guys out.

  • @syphilistic Yep, I like that little truck. I've also used an air chisel to cut the rivet heads off, for me it is much faster than drilling.

  • Seriously, every oil change?

    Uh oh.

BTW, I thought they were grease nipples.

  • @bowlingballout They also call them zerk fittings. Many modern vehicles have lubed for life parts nowadays.

If you do have greasable parts they're probably aftermarket parts.

  • @bowlingballout Not necessarily EVERY oil change but at least every other is a good idea. This type of joint is not sealed so when you put new grease in you actually force out all the dirt, old grease, and moisture that gets built up over time inside the joint.

  • realy good, thanks!

  • yup my old 83 elce have all the fittings :) when i drove it regularly i did after every oil change :)

  • I've got a grease gun and all kinds of grease, but I'm too afraid to lube up my chassis because I've heard different types of grease interacts badly with other types.

I've heard some will turn rock hard, others will turn to mush when mixed.

My Jeep says something like "Use Jeep grease part #" in the book, so I'd have to go get that from the dealership to be safe.

But then again, I have no idea what mechanics have put in over the years. It could be different....

  • @sbab83 You are 100% correct to be cautious as mixing lubricants can cause the conditions you describe. For the most part the cartridges for the grease guns are interchangeable. In short I think it is better to use some lube rather than none at all.

  • i thought it was just called a grease fitting?

  • @jdubdoubleu

You can call it either or, but go to the store and buy some, around here there mostly called zerk fittings.

But when talking to people, they normally know what a grease fitting is but maybe not a zerk fitting. I think zerk fitting is the correct term though.

  • @jdubdoubleu It is called that too as well as grease nipple.

  • @jdubdoubleu Yes it is also called that and sometimes a grease nipple amongst other things that I can't remember off of the top of my head.
