  • oh god, are they running NextSTEP there?

  • dont interrupt the smart guys when they r talking...

  • 1 dude disliked this, I wounder who this is?

  • wow, and the tegra 3 (an arm tablet). can do 1.92Gigaflops. Almost caught up in a totally mobile device..

  • Oh man! This used to run on TV!?

    Its awsome!

  • @hujson77 They aim to be POSIX-compliant, right? :)

  • @hujson77 They aim to POSIX-complaint, right? :)

  • how can i make a cluster from scratch i need help from any one nice enaff to give me some ideas id be great-full

  • @boygenious92 Depends on your budget. Get 4 Antec ISK300-65 or 150, get 4 mini-itx boards and dual channel memory kits(I got 4 gig a piece) and fire shit up. Mine has 4 times 4 quadcores(95watt tdp each), just make sure they will fit into the power envelope of whatever minicase you get. Small, cheap, fast cluster that will not bleed you dry in electricity costs. I do recommend you get 4 Intel GB nic's in there and a fast good switch. HP has a nice Procurve(1810g I believe).

  • OpenVMS offers a bit more and advanced clustering capabilities, including full filesystem mirroring and supports more interconnect fabrics. Still, that's very nice!

  • 4:33

    Windowmaker!

  • retro

  • omfg, the middle guy(foremost cluster builder) is socially inept to the tenth power!!!

  • I run my websites from home with freebsd. Works great with maybe 500 unique visitors a day and maybe double the page loads. Don't know how it would hold up with more users. Id like to build a cluster just for the hell of it. I think it would be fun.

  • Besides BOINC , are there other uses?

  • Does this show exist at all anymore? I don't think it does, damn g4.

  • doubt it...domain for sale

  • А по Русски слабо???

  • Build, then go and choose a Boinc project :)

  • Where can I get this stuff (server computers)?

  • waitwaitwaitwait... why would you like a cluster like that in the first place o_O ?

  • Well I want to host websites and maybe do some 3d rendering..

  • a cluste to host websites = useless

a cluster for 3d rendering, if you know how to set it up, might be useful.

But getting all the equipement needed and setting the cluster up might be more of a bitch than anything else.

I don't know what you planned to do exactly for the 3d rendering, but you might be better off with simply a single quad core, lots of ram and a few bucks more out of you wallet.

  • Well you are wrong.. The best web hosting services uses cluster super computers running Linux, and it's very good for 3d-rendering..

But a cluster will be too big and power demanding, so I'll just use one server..

Got hold on a HP ProLiant DL380 G3 - 2x2.8Ghz Intel Xeon, 3GB RAM which I will host websites with..

  • LOL

well dude knock yourself out if you think you know better ;)

  • A friend of mine hosts his website from his home PC running Linux. Works great if you have the bandwidth.

  • Brains!

  • Beastie was still FreeBSD official logo at the time; so this is prior to 2005. Read "logo" not mascot; beastie is still FreeBSD's project mascot.

  • Sweet, now I can have 15000 windows open on windowmaker! w00t!

  • lol na, its all about the Solitaire.

  • @NovackProductions wow, just imagine that

  • That is crazy power right there!

  • These guys seem much nicer than most of the Linux folks.

  • lawl, well we GNU guys are quite hatefull agenst most non-FreeSoftware....

  • BSD is unix, not linux.

  • @NovackProductions not much of a real difference

  • @2dumb2care

Your name says it all. While both are unix-like, FreeBSD and Linux work differently. Much differently.

  • @dragos240 from what i have messed with nothing thing real different than again i didnt go real deep into the workings of bsd.

  • @dragos240

Really dragos? In what ways are they different? Furthermore, how do these differences affect your interaction with both respective systems?

  • @raymondmroz

The stucture of BSD systems and linux systems is basically the same. However, there are many differences, such as how devices are detected, the device file names, package management, the fact that BSD is an operating system and linux is a kernel, the default utilities (linux uses GNU tools). I wouldn't mind using either operating system, but even if you know linux well, it would be a good idea to look into the FreeBSD manual, you may be stuck if you don't.

  • @greendayaddictions @greendayaddictions

Thanks, polite response. I have actually been using Linux for about 15 years, and OpenBSD for about a 10. :) I have also been professionally employed as a (mostly C/C++) dev. for much of that time and even got me some schoolin' (back when IRC was sweeping the globe ;). I was just being snarkey; dragos was being a bit insulting. Generally I never bite on troll-bait, but I was tired, cranky and had a long weekend. cheers

  • @raymondmroz

Hi, dragos240 is my other account. My mood varies from time to time. I appologize if I seemed like an internet troll. I think I was up past the 24 hour mark when I posted that.

    Regards,

    Dragos240/Greendayaddictions

  • @NovackProductions - Yes, BSD *was* UNIX, I use the term was because it has been dead for over 15 years. FreeBSD and Linux are *not* UNIX, at least not according to SUS which is what matters.

  • @NovackProductions

bsd isn't unix, it is unix-like.

however there are a lot of people say freebsd is unix.

HP-UX is unix, solaris is unix.

    fix me if i'm wrong

  • @NovackProductions No, BSD is a clone of UNIX.

cp, ls, pwd, rm, man, etc. BSD doesn't use those original programs, they use a clone of those programs.

  • it makes me sad that this processing power can be bought at best buy for 600$ and the WoW addicts take it for granted that theres anything more than a bag of sand inside because they didnt have to work for it

  • if you say so, but those computers at best buy are crappy machines. I still use my shuttle from 2004 to play WoW and other work.

  • $700 very cheap my ass

  • that was back in 2004 to 2005

  • more likely 2002-2003

  • what do i need to buid a freebsd server ?

  • a computer :D

  • @MELNICKPRODUCTIONS UM, an old computer? I did it like that before

  • I'm totally building one of these!!!!!

  • Oh snap, I love your videos....I'd love to get a BSD cluster for Folding@Home.

  • @pcfxer I wouldnt waste a whole cluster for BOINC. But i got a dedicated box for LHC@home. I'd like a cluter for my main computer
