What an amazing voice and talent, taken much too soon. As usual, Mankind loses out again to some higher calling that forever lays unknown. If some gently souls can be re-incarnated to try again, please send this one back to us.
The people that refuse to give up will most often find the fact that the water is to wide to cross over is only a delusion. The human spirt has been known to be virtually unsinkable at times.Take care ADonovan43.
Hard to believe a song from way back in the 1600's could still be relevant, either way, with her talent I would listen to her singing the instructions to an ICEA flat pack
@phcoh The song with these lyrics can't be traced back further than 100 years. Though you are right it is still old. The lyirc starting Water Is Wide was originally an English version of an older Scottish song called Waly Waly which is supposedly over 200 years old though the words are completely different. That itself was based on the Scottish Ballad called Lord Jamie Douglas which deals with events from the 1680s though that doesn't prove it was around then. Could have been. Not this song tho!
listen closely to Roberta Flack in her version of Bridge over troubled water and Sweet Bitter love...you will Eva in there...they come for the same depth and deep it is
Oh had she lived then truly she would still make our hearts cry and yet smile. Her version of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is one of the most beautiful songs I know of . oox
I just cannot understand what there is about this song that nine people chose "don't like." I certainly understand that we all have the right to our own opinions, but some people's opinions seem so dark...
wow this is my fave song of all times. The song sounds like it's about someone who drowned at sea or about people who got lost at sea in a boat cause I know it has something to do with the sea and a boat cause of the lyrics.
Great Eva effort, love her singing..I wonder where she reincarnated to, perhaps a young singing troubadour somewhere, somehow, she is surely back now as someone......I wonder if the person she is now, likes Eva's music...how can you not?
Great cover of this old song! I love Karla Bonnoff's and Cowboy Junkies versions. David Sanborn did a great jazz sax version with Linda Ronstadt on vocals. All beautiful but I think Cowboy Junkies is my favorite....today ; )
@bryanCire2010 I know where you are coming from but don't hate God just because he took one of his children home but thank him that we had all the good people for the time we did as they are a planted seed that will nourish the next generation of genius and in turn will add to the quality of all our lives. take care. @Clof1959 Wow what a beautiful song is this from Eva. Also very nice clip "Sunsong23". Thanks for sharing this great song Robby & Bob. I wish you all the best. Hugs Marc
@Clof1959 Dear Romantic 4 , thanks for this heavenly video of Eva Cassidy, she has such an amazing voice, always when i listen to her i get the goosebumbs,
Margo...When I wrote my comment on this song & performance by Eva, I could not help but think of your Beautiful Sharon & Selina sitting on a cloud by Eva's feet as she played her guitar and sang this song just for the littlest & youngest Angels that she has now become their Angel Mother until your arrival to be with them once again.....You are always in our thoughts much more then you could possibly know as you can see by my thoughts...
In the info section of her albums, it said that the record companies didn't want to represent her because they didn't know what to do with her, what category to put her in & she wouldn't go with just one type of music. She sang what she liked and what she felt with emotion. She refused to be put in a category.
Honestly, Eva had the purest voice I've ever heard. I literally tear up a little when I listen to her sing. She left this world long before I discovered her music, and for that I am sorry. But her gift will live forever in her recordings, and for that I truly thank God. No artist will ever touch me the way she does. God bless you, Eva. You've certainly blessed us.
Actually, this is a very old, traditional song, so we can only guess what the "original" melody was. That said, I am sure you were referring to which ever melody you heard first or most often. If you'd like to post a link to THAT version, I'd love to hear it. :)
When I start doubting God, I just have to listen to this voice. There has to be a God to create something this beautiful. I wish He would have let us have her a little longer.
Remembering you on your birthday~ tomorrow , February 2- with thanks for your beautiful, one of a kind voice, that has kept me company for over 6 years ! You are, and will always remain ,a huge part of of my life!! God bless you, and your family!
EVA chills!! Beautiful as always~ in ALL ways! Eva is one of a kind! No one compares! Not only her extraordinary voice, but also, her beautiful guitar work. I never tire of listening to her! God Bless you Eva! EVA! ....
I only discovered Eva a few days ago, too late since she died in 1996 at the age of 33already. Her voice is so phenomenal and she is living on in her songs.
Eva brings great joy here-to me she lives on. Her passion teaches more about love and living well, than any book. Have this song in many versions, James Taylor, Irish Women and many instrumental. The video is wonderful, the eagle, rowboat, ship. Wonderful. If only I could make this a Hallmark card to help me say what I feel, but am not so good at saying to my love.
The more I listen to Eva..the more I am blown away by her interpretation of a song...she was a master of song interpreatation as well as having one of the best voices i have ever heard...thank you for the music Eva.This song is incredibly beautiful too.
Sunsong23, Eva was a musical angel. This was one of the songs my son and I sang (this traditional) @ my husband's funeral in July, '09. He was a high profile, honored Journalist and Veteran, loved the water - especially the Mississippi River. Thank you very much. I love Eva's singing.
Her voice will live on to give comfort to everyone by listening to her music. Just as other artists have passed, their works live on as long as they are played for us still able to appreciate their talent.
Yes - The two ladies whose singing starts teary eyes. These two could get to your soul. Eva had the unique ability to do this without another musician on the stage. I've never seen anything like this, before.
I've been a fan since 1998.I have heard many singers with awesome voices, but Eva's was "the perfect storm",so to speak...Colorful tone, untouchable range without going into falsetto, phrasing, pitch, dynamics, wonderful guitar playing and what a taste in music !!
No one could sing like Eva and not have a foot in heaven. I only heard of her yesterday. I'm so sad--but everything for a reason, right? It's really a miracle to have what we do have. Now I'm not sure what to do with my life--she seems to have a changing effect on folks. And she's familiar, like a very old friend. I believe she truly is from heaven--maybe she left early to lure us home--to a higher place inside ourselves--so we can sing our own music like she did--and always will, in our hearts.
FalafelFun, I won't tell you what to do with your life, but I do hope you do some writing....what a very beautiful and poetic way you stated your fondness for Eva's work! You are gifted at feeling and expressing feeling, so best to you in whatever you do. :-)
she did not wish to be famous and experience everything that goes with it. Just to share this gift with others and inspire them. Money did not matter as did family and relationships. She was a amazing women with the voice of angel
on the verge of breakthrough she was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away within one year.... it unfortunatly wasnt meant to be and we all are left to wonder what she could have been how her music could have enriched us more then it already did...
@stardancing7 "and the sons of pullman porters , and the sons of engineers, rode their fathers' magic carpet made of steel", Steve Goodman, The Train They Call the City of New Orleans
Had no idea that Eva Cassidy had recorded "The Water is Wide". And... it seems to be every bit as stunning as everything else which is left of her short, unique, amazing output. She grows and grows in stature.
I still love Pete Seeger's 1958 version the best. Pete ponders our humanity in the liner notes when he says "Why is it that human beings can get a warm comfortable feeling as they all sing together about someone ready to kill themselves with despair? It's true with love songs in the Americas, and in Europe east and west".
"The song is related to "Lord Jamie Douglas"(Child #204), a lengthy ballad dating to 1776 in Scotland; however, it is sung to the tune of "Waly, Waly", dated to the early 1720s in England. (Leach 1955:546-51). Cecil Sharp, an English collector of folk songs in America and England, collected five variants and published them under the title "O Waly, Waly" and related it to a ballad known in the 1600s (Sharp 1916)."
From Pete Seeger: American favorite Ballads, Vol.2 (Smithsonian Folkways)
Thank you Penny for sharing this and thank you Eva for singing it you have a beautiful voice and the clip its self was touching, this is so well done...five stars....
Thank you Penny.Thank you Eva for singing this beautiful song so beautiful deep...you take me ev`rywhere...so heavenly beautiful...sung so beautiful with these beautiful pictures
Wonderful song, and excellent vocal by Eva Cassidy, and its a great lost of talent at such a young age!! Thanks for this awesome share Penny!!20/20*!!!
Eva's incredible and moving interpretations of every song she sang were so emotional and special that it is hard to put into words. The world was fortunate to have had her artistry bestowed on us; I just wish it was for a much longer time. She is missed.
I am deeply moved by Cassidy and her passing at too young of an age. I can really go on a big bummer when I think about it. It makes me want to fulfill my purpose on earth before I go. I hope to meet her up there. Maybe she will let me harmonize in the back ground.
Eva Cassidy was/is the greatest female vocalist of all time. What a great loss for the world when she passed away. Nobody could sing this song better....

To whom it may concern:
This song is not Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Breton or... from any other Celtic origin!
It's English (perhaps surprisingly, given the style) And the English ought to take pride in their history of writing their own notable folk songs.
(I'm Celtic too, so my saying that is fair and balanced :P)

It sounds to me that some of the lyrics to this song were borrowed from an old Irish folk song called "Carrikfergus". Anybody know for sure?

on the verge of breakthrough she was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away within one year.... it unfortunatly wasnt meant to be and we all are left to wonder what she could have been how her music could have enriched us more then it already did...

Nice version here, too

It is a very old English folk song. Not celtic.
