I did study in Sunderland for my MSc. Honestly, I would not advise anybody I know to go there. The place is very not inspiring at all. There are little or no qualified lecturers. I guess its because of the city's historical background for building ship and fishermens town. Its all a lie about some studies they offer. Sunderland's Computing school is just a crap, No good or great teaching staff and Lab. Above all the locals are very friendly and racial.
I am graduating from the University of Sunderland in July 2009 and really enjoyed the experience. My lecturers were all experts in their fields (with some having published textbooks), also the facilities were very good (Tom Cowie lecture theatre, Murray library). I received a fantastic education and would definitely recommend Sunderland University.

Just to expand a little. I dont want to upset new students - I just want people to know how bad this dump is. I strongly advise you to transfer as soon as you can. You may be getting advice to "see how it goes".
This would be an error - it's what i did after a few months of misery in my first year - i made friends and didn't really want to move on because of that - it was a HUGE mistake - things never got any better, just worse and worse.
If you put in for a transfer early you have more of a chance - if you delay you can end up being stuck there.
Here's a little bet - in the first few weeks you will experience chaotic admistration - they really are clueless. NEVER EVER EXPECT AN APOLOGY FOR ANYTHING. and remember this is costing you thousands upon thousands of pounds.....I worked hard and got nothing but one kick in the teeth after another by incompetent staff.

Its a racist city and the nightlife is boring. Students at Sunderland are usually people who cant get into Newcastle,Durham or Northumbria Universities. The lecturers are the same. Third rate right through.
Although they lost several pieces of my work and did occasionally mis-mark work or pass me for modules i had never even taken - they are still great - there is absolutely no issue with organization or communication what-so-ever.
A great policy towards sexual assault too - when i was forced to submit a piece of work a day late because I was helping a fellow student after she had been attacked - Staff insisted the victim handed over medical and police reports...
I had a similar experiance. My daughter had a bad asthma attack, was hospitalised and put on a ventilator. They demanded a doctors letter and when I refused they said they would put a black mark on my university record. Also the natives will break your soul. Argos or the Bridges on a weekday is a great place for those studying aggressive parenting or child abuse. Wonderful case studies. Deprived area, deprived education.
I agree on the child abuse thing. You see so much bad parenting in public. Its also really racist here. The people with an education are right wing Daily Mail readers the majority read the sun/star/miror and blame immigrants because they dont have a job. Try learning a skill.
Living in Sunderland is like dancing to no music. You can try but there's nothing to motivate or inspire you. Ive lived here for 4 years and it makes South Shields look like Monte Carlo.

I was about to go to Sunderland uni but i chose to go to Canterbury uni in the end. umm i wonder how it would be like haha.well, it seems like there is a lot of computer and stairs not my cup of tea:)))
i went to the poly from 87-90. It was all locals with perms back then. The girls had them too. We had to pretend we worked at the Nissan to avoid attack for being cockney (I'm from Birmingham). The Marco Gabbiadini special( everything on it) was a good'un, though at Cuccini's pizza. And are the birds at Idols still topless? Happy days. (sort of)

I would like to withdraw all of the views and comments I have made on this board and point out;
1. Although, like all cities, there is a contingent of people who are racist, the vast majority of people embrace cultural diversirty.
2. The facilities and staffing at the University is making large strides every year and is competitive.
3. The silent majority of parents in the area are competent, though, like everywhere else, there are those who lack parenting skills.
