@rahrahkadybugg this is a german choir, so they are singing the latin in the germanic style, a sort of germanic latin, which is to diphthong the "e" instead of the correct latin pronunciation of "eh" (e.g. reh-queim v. ray-quiem). Notice also how they don't have a "ch" sound in "luceat" but pronounce it with an "s" sound.
This is an amazing piece of music that i like but i went to the east troy community choir and camerata mixed in and it was amazing! I was going to cry and the music combine with the song was utterly amazing
The "e" sounds are a bit off; if I remember correctly, in Latin it should be more of an "eh" sound...but besides that, wonderful blend and wonderful performance! I sang this piece in university, I love it!
I remember singing this at a November choral concert with 3 different choirs at school. What an amazing experience and we were lucky enough to be asked back again 2 years later. Still makes me emotional remembering the reasons we were singing it
Please refer to the Italianized Ecclesiastical pronunciation on the Latin: It is really off in the entire performance. Other than that, good job with consonants and cut offs.
John Rutter Is Incredible! He came and conducted our choir for a day, and he is so amazing. If you are reading this, Thank you so much and you are brilliant John Rutter! x Ella Rusbridger, Westbourne House xx
Just performer this is Carnegie Hall last night! Was a great expierience! John Rutter is a great guy, i got to meet him and talk with him a bit and I am so glad I was able to expierience Carnegie Hall!
@margotlorena1 it really is. I've been fortunate enough to be in the chorus for a couple of Rutter's pieces and they are a pleasure. They are not necessarily the most difficult pieces to sing but you have to be spot on accurate and it sounds amazing.
I can't believe that the Collegiate Singers from The Master's College will get to sing this piece! We did the Gloria for Christmas last semester and it was then that I decided that I liked John Rutter's music.
The first time I ever heard this song, it was as the 'coda' piece to our school's production of Our Town. Before the curtain call, the director (who was also our choir director) put on a simple light display over the stage, highlighting the set pieces that made up the graveyard that closes the play, with this music in the background. It was incredibly powerful, and moving; even some of the more hard-hearted members of the cast were moved to tears.
Can't understand how there are people, who can listen to that......When we sing this in our choir last year i started to love this( to be a part of this angle-like-sound)...but just sitting there and just listen to it.....can't understand how you can do this without standing up and singing....this sound makes me always smile and sing...
I used to decry this man's music. It doesn't connect. Then I did a little survey of Karl Jenkins YT videos, left a few sardonic comments and said "Come back John Rutter, all is forgiven". I can hear there is meat in this writing - while Jenkins is for musical vegetarians.
@alipitogen Having said the above, my cd collection includes roughly a thousand J.S.Bach recordings and every NIcolas Gombert recording available. My KJ and JR total amounts at the moment to zero and will remain so until I hear something to change my mind, the which would , by the way, be in the form of music, not words.
The substitute teacher my high school choir had when we rehearsed this had his score signed. We referred to kyrie as the jurassic park part sometimes.
We're singing this Requiem with all the high schools in our district for a combined concert. I want to cry when I hear just our 22-person chamber choir sing it [roughly] in rehearsal; I can't imagine how it will sound with 200 voices, perfected. This song is superb.
@enderfan Oh I know, I've sung in "German Latin" several time here in the U.S. and in Europe. I just figured since this is an English composition they latin would have been pure Latin.

We sang this at my high school. But we had to have it memorized. I actually auditioned for the solo but just missed it. I loved this piece. My chorus at the time was over a hundred people. We had the opportunity to go to Carnegie?? Spelling?? but I couldn't go!
This man is amazing, he isn't all uptight and serious as you would expect from a composer, he was actually a fun guy to sing with, my school and a neighboring school got to sing the Requiem in Carnegie Hall in June, it was an amazing experience, let me tell you, if you want an autograph from him, have fun with that, he gave 5 minute breaks and always had to delay people off to the next break and the one after, etc.
@Huffinearts yeah, i nearly didn't go because it was in New York and im from Texas, but we were able to fund the trip, and we had a pretty big group, but it was still a great experience and i learned alot of things that made me better as a singer and as a musician
Heard this on Classic FM today whilst driving home - felt like angels were singing to me. Glad I managed to find out what it was and discover this Youtube video...
I sang this in a choral group. With Rutter's work the diction and tonality is so important, not necessarily difficult to sing but you have to be spot on accurate.
I sang this with my choir and we did an awsome job too. As did these guys Bravo! The only thing that makes me wonder their pronounciation of e. the sang ee a couple of times when in latin its eh O.o;

So, there are still great composers! This music takes me away to somewhere I want to stay for ever.

Is it the intensive study of the latin language or just experiencing your local environment?
