I debated between this and a 5D Mark I, but went with the 50D because of it's bust speed, Digic 4 image processor, and backwards compatibility with batteries and lenses I used with my old digital rebel.
I always use it with the Canon BG-E2N battery grip to avoid this problem; depending on how you hold the camera, in my opinion, you may have this issue
but when you DO use it, do you find that your fingers run off the camera itself and onto the grip, i am asking due to the fact that it appears that your hand is the relative size of my hand
Which is better? 17-85 F/4.5-6 or 28-135 F/3.5-5.6?

quick question, how does the camera feel in your hand? does you pinky finger hang off the bottom?
