Gordon Lightfoot has a bizarre combination of talent, confidence and stage presence that is impossible to reproduce. He isn't singing to get audience applause. He acts as if he's singing because he is compelled to sing for the audience begging to hear the music. No pretensions. Just an honest guy. Absolute respect, Gordon!
They don't seem to make them like this any more this guy is awsome. My only regret in life is that I have not been able to see any of his concerts. Would love to do that one day but has Gordon is getting older it may not be possible. Regards to all good music lovers, Malcolm, Yorkshire, England.
Ronrogers2 The reason the quality is so good because it came from The BBC this was recorded in a BBC studio and infact the whole concert was shown on BBC 4 fairly recently. Watch out BBC4 often repeats things
They don't make singer/songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot anymore. No matter what performance you see, you can just feel the anguish in his voice and it touches the heart. That's why this song is one of my favorites of all time.
@Jaci1971 Wow, well said. I am a huge fan of Gord. Your words are so accurate. You can definitel feel the anguish in his voice. And yes, it does indeed, touch the heart.
This is easily one of my favorite songs. I always joke that I have about 100 songs in my top ten but this is truly one of my ten favorite. If I were stranded on a desert Island I would make sure I had this song my Ipod....and power to keep it charged!
back up guitarist here was Red Shea..who passed away a couple years ago...Rick Haynes on bass is still with the band.......for decades!! Terry Clement, the most recent back up man for decades on 6 string died as well recently........today Carter Lancaster is the guy on 6 string...awesome as well.
many many MANY good thanks for this post GL100...this is absolutely this best rendition on YT...gordon at his finest singing the most beautiful lyrics in the english language...it is an honor to walk the earth with this man...
I grew up listening to this song.I've always loved it.Theres something about it that just
rips my heart out every time. When my bf and I went to see him two years ago,He was on the 3,maybe 4 note when I knew which song he was playing.I almost burst
love the backup guitar guy with the finger pick style riffs.he adds alot...studio guitar players rule, they are the iceing on the cake, the color touch over that matters.
This great Lightfoot performance at BBC studios was aired on january 22 , 1972 but it was actually taped in the spring of 1971 before his Summertime of life album was released,,thanks a lot for posting this jewel !!
