They lived in the 1500s and claimed to have direct connection to God. One can assume that there have been "illuminati" lodges all ovr Europe and the world for quite some time. Also, the Vatican officially was against them; yet there was always a connection between the two to this day. Weishaupt's lodge wasn't the first in 1776.
